AutobotMatrix is just what he says he is. He is the Life Force of the Matrix that led and guided all Autobots for millions of years. When Optimus used the power of the matrix to cure the universe of the Spores that once infected every corner of every world, he unkowingly released the life force of the AutobotMatrix.
Sadly, he did not control the release, and sent AutobotMatrix flying throughout space and landing on a planet amongst the far distant stars of the galaxy. Ever since then, he had been trying to find his way back, jumping form ship to ship, form planet to planet.
AutobotMatrix had a very limiting factor of not being a physical body, he was just a life force. Therefore, he could not direct his movement far on his own. No could hed fight to defend himself, or brake through barriers that he faced along his path. And there were many fights to defend himself through, and there were many barriers to brake.
However, AutobotMatrix learnt to turn his limits into his abilities. Being only a life-force, he could jump form body to body. He could find lifeless carcassess and inhabit them, bringing them life, and using their powers. He could also highjack living bodies, and use them to just the same effect. However, he also learnt that for every living body he highjacked, he took a part of that body with him, meaning he started to become just like the Decepticons.
Eventually, AutobotMatrix found his way back to earth, and met Optimus Prime. Optimus felt soem mkind of connection with AutobotMatrix, having made his own journey through the matrix to find the asnwers he needed to seek. AutobotMatrix told Optimus of his stories, so the Autobot's made a shell for him.
Now he has one main body, but he still has the ability to jump into others, just as GalvatronMatrix does, and use their powers to his advantage. Using what he had learnt through his travels, he 'took' a aprt of every body he entered, and created duplicate bodies, that he could enter whenever it seemed fitting to do so, without the posibility of causing any more harm.
He uses his line-up of bodies, and his useful skills to fight alongside the Autobots, just waiting for the moment to climb on board Scorpinok or Tripitocn, and create his own living bodies, and use them to destory the eveil forces of the Decepticons.
