Damn! Seeing Overlord like this, it's beyond repaints! The amount of remolding is so complete, it ridiculous! There are barely the legs that are the same. Making Overlord well worth owning.

Real talk though, should they even be considered retools? The only thing that is the same on them are the legs (which is a completely separate piece) and even then the crotch is different. I have a hard time believing that they would retool a figure this extensively.

Aw man, is the transformation of the jet section basically an Aerialbot transformation? That kinda sucks
Is this like Sixshot where you don't have to take out the Titan Master in head mode for the vehicle mode?

So I'm not the only one that noticed an odd little Last Stand of the Wreckers trend going on in this line, right? Like, it seemed to be the main theme alongside 1987 toyline and Triple Changers.
It accounts for most the Deluxe molds not related to 1987 characters - Perceptor, Jumpstarters - there's a clear LSotW design intent in Kup and Perceptor (right down to his sniper rifle in the case of the latter), we got not only the main villain Overlord but we also got the full set of Phase Sixers -- a concept originating from that story, and involving the otherwise extremely obscure Black Shadow.
So with all that, does anyone else think we might get remaining characters like Impactor or Ironfist bless his spark as new-head retools in as-of-yet-unrevealed boxsets?

That's not the case. 84-86 is pretty much done for CHUG most have been done except for the likes of reflector and beachcomber and ones they wanted to do again. Hasbro said the focus lately is 87 and later due to the gimmick. Power of the primes is rumored to be mostly 88 and later. Doesn't have anything to do with LSTOW, just the flow of the characters that haven't had toys reimagined yet.
As for overlord, I mean look at him. He's more super god master force than IDW and that's by choice. They could have made him more IDW but they went with the original look for him. This later line is more "let's make some characters that we never got to release massively back in the day. Black shadow is a great example of looking more victory than IDW but that's mostly because IDW just used his generations 2012 toy.
And I am still waiting for my overlord! He's been in the states for three days and hasn't arrived yet.

I foresee and impactor coming sooner rather than later. Probably in Power of the Primes. He is one of the main TF characters still without a good representation in toy form from Hasbro proper (along with Elita one). Then again, we dont have a good Ratchet either, which is a real shame.
Anyways back to your talk on LSOTW, I totally see those vibes too and somehow instead of being overjoyed it makes me sad that the Overlord we are gettign doesnt give me any vibes from the comic. I dont know what it is but even though they have the same components and overal colour scheme, I dont see IDW overlord in that toy, at all. I instead see only the G1 toy.

I wish I had the optimism as others and say "it's a popular character so a toy has to be coming" nothing against anyone who does but i like to think of myself as a realist with toys. Like a said a week ago or so, it took 11 years to get a classics Brawn. 6 years to get a retail release of classics thundercracker. I honestly don't look at who's popular in the comics

Also, I agree with you about the characters. Problem is, there are sooooooooooooooooo many in the universe now that who knows what we'll get at any given time!
Also. Why isn't Overlord here yet.

Waitwaitwait..you don't count that one from the Universe line?! Brawn that is. That little one a few years ago. Totally not as awesome but still qualifies maybe..?Randomhero wrote:I wish I had the optimism as others and say "it's a popular character so a toy has to be coming" nothing against anyone who does but i like to think of myself as a realist with toys. I fully agree with your overlord statement but i just wanted to point that they did release beachcomber. Scale is off but its still a minibot under that line

Transformers Universe - Classics 2.0 Beachcomber Gallery
If you count Classics Sideswipe and Ratchet as 84-86 bots released in the CHUG line then the same goes for Beachcomber.
Also, CW Reflector was supposed to be a mainline release but Hasbro let Fun Pub release it instead (apparently due to some laguage laws which I heard from someone who worked with hasbro on that but I still dont get it). So from Hasbro's perspective, all these 84-86 characters that initially had G1 toys have been redone under their own direct supervision.
You dont have to remove the titan master. But I always have it chlling in the tank mode cockpit
And yes the upper torso is probably the simplest CHUG transformation of the past decade but it works and he looks awesome.

Hmm, this comparison just makes me want Sky Shadow. Which is kinda odd since Overlord's the character I'm invested in (granted I say odd but "toys I buy" and "characters I like" rarely match up).
"Retool" has become a game of semantics at this point.
For me, it's a 'retool' in as much as the toys still function the same, and are rather clearly based on each other.

100% agree, there is no longer a clear fan definition for retool. So it can be a retool or not in anyones opinion. Since toys are all designed at the same time and the release schedule is no longer indicative of what was designed first, I feel the term is obsolete. The truth is these 2 toys share the same design and structural skeleton along with the same legs. Anything said beyond that is whatever a fan wants to say
Its definitely a cost saving measure, just as retools of the past.

Its too bad people forget about those. We actually had a nice Classics minibot team in its own scale with nice molds that werent repeats from other characters (unlike the latest classics Gen Warpath which doesnt even have a cannon on his chest).

I think it's also fairly worth noting that this since CW we've had a new design team which seems much more inclined towards releasing ordered categories of characters together and completing teams. Compare Generations 2011 for instance having a rather odd and random selection of characters - Wheeljack, Ramjet, Thunderwing, Straxus, Red Alert - to CW and TR where right off the bat we got the four original Scramble City combiners, all seven main 1987 Headmasters, a Targetmaster collection which looks to be completed in the next wave... it's pretty clear that Warden's team, no matter what you might think of them; is much more committed towards giving fans complete collections now. They know what they're doing rather than the likes of Classics and Universe which - while awesome - had a pretty ragtag crew on offer with no discernible trend or pattern beyond perhaps obvious mold re-uses.
