Empire magazine had a poll asking its reader to create the defining list of 100 best movie characters in all cinema history. While Transformers started out (and is still) as a presence on the television, it seems they are now a true staple of cinema since Optimus Prime (the movie version, mind you) was chosen as the 98th greatest movie character of all time. On the list, he beats out Edna Mode from the Incredibles and Randle McMurphy from One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. He also technically beats every single movie character ever except for 97 of them.

Here is his entry:

098

Optimus Prime

APPEARANCE: The Transformers series (2007-2014)
CREATOR: Denny O’Neil, Jim Shooter, Bob Budiansky
PERFORMER: Peter Cullen (voice)
DEFINING MOMENT: Riding high on a mecha dinosaur in Age Of Extinction.
FASCINATING FACT: He has his own Mr. Potatohead, called Optimash Prime (“More than meets the fry”).

Here was the top 10 to those who are curious:

1. Indiana Jones
2. James Bond
3. Han Solo (Star Wars)
4. Batman
5. Ellen Ripley (Alien)
6. The Joker
7. John McClane (Die Hard)
8. Tyler Durden (Fight Club)
9. Darth Vader (Star Wars)
10. The Dude (The Big Lebowski)

2. There are more deserving characters on this list.
3. Prepare for internet-poopstorm.

Does it make a difference that this time it was the Internet who chose this? I discovered this while listening to the Empire Podcast and the critic talking about it was totally against Prime being there. haha!

Indiana Jones huh? Not who I would have put for #1. Expected Darth Vader to be a little higher though. Great to see The Dude make the top 10!

Film popularity doesn't really come into it, The Dude is just, The Dude. There is no other like him.

Well, no surprise that he's at the bottom of the barrel. All I can say is at least Bumblebee wasn't on there.

He should be number one, no questions asked. Not only is he my favorite movie character of all time, but movie Optimus is THE greatest fictional character of all time, period.

As it stands, 98 out of a billion isn't bad and I'm going to bake Optimus a celebratory cake, regardless.

No one had problem when wheelie did it in animated movie, but when jazz and blaster talk in rhyme no one complained but people complained about wheelie talking in rhyme.

Should be great ful m. Bay made this series into popular movies bay made transformers more popular all over again g1 series didn't never made much sense, same with g1 comics scorponok being same size as grimlock scorponok is city transformer head master and he is same size as Dino bots in g1 comics but unicron and combines are not,.

If we had new director taking over number three film will it be successful and make sense new directors took over for tim burton for batman sequels gave batman and robin bat nipples on costumes made goth,a city colorful gigantic castle city with dark circus lights, and director with Brandon Ruth superman returns man of steel turned out better and exciting than superman returns

I am happy Optimus made the list. He really has become an icon in the movieverse and despite what people say about him, he is a great character. Surprised Bee didn't make the list too, but we must also consider some of the big names on there and the ones that aren't :BOT:

Well technically this means he beats every single character from harry potter except Harry himself, as well as Princess Lea, Darth Maul, every single Liam Neeson character, every single gary oldman character, as well as every character played by Peter Lore and Vincent Price, all the movie monsters, Ben Hur, Sparticus, King Leonidas, Spock, Tintin, marry poppins, Bishop from Aliens, Dr Allen Grant, Santa Clause, Hulk and Thor himself.

I think his presence on this list instead of any of those above pissed way more people than any of us pissed Optimus isnt any higher.

Personally, I am super surprised Patrick Bateman is so high on this list and that Captain Mal Reynolds beats both Star Lord and Captain Kirk.

"Your all-time favourite heroes and villains exclusively revealed!"
What a bizarrely nonsensical statement. I mean, a silly reader-voted poll pretending to be fact is a given, but implying I have to go to one specific site to find out my own personal favorites? Pffft HAHAH!!

I'm rather amused GotG managed to get two entries in there -- and neither of them Rocket! The other franchises that did that are obvious mainstays like Star Wars and Batman.

Oh and I realize Superman didnt make the list. So just think of all the Superman fans out there who see that Optimus Prime beat him, HA!

I'd think Superman fans (or fans of anything else that didn't make the list) would be far more annoyed at Minions beating their favorites than Optimus Prime. Optimus at least turns into a truck and rides fire-breathing dinosaurs, Minions... say "banana" funny.

I like the movies but even I can see how the robots have no character and only Optimus shows a little bit

But in no way does any of them have development.

Optimus, Bumblebee, Megatron, Sentinel, and Lockdown all had it. The Fallen had a bit of it and so did Crosshairs, just a tiny bit. You can't tell me none of them had any development.

Well to be fair, tha autobots started in AOE by not caring about the humans. And at the end, they do. So much so that Optimus then rises to space to take down anyone who would hurt his beloved human friends. Isn't that development?

He took off to go beat people up.

Same as he's been doing since the first movie.

Optimus Prime is nothing more than a bully looking to subjugate the Decepticons who are doing nothing more than wanting their race to expand across the galaxy.

I'm sure by the end of AOE, Optimus still hates humanity. He just knows it's his duty to protect them, no matter what. After all, the reason the Decepticons came to Earth in the first place was his fault.

And it was The Fallen's fault for both turning Megatron to the dark side and for building the Great Machine on Earth in the first place, which is what drew the AllSpark to the planet. Optimus never knew of the Star Harvester being on Earth or that the AllSpark would be drawn to it. When he launched it, he shot it into the Alkaris Anomaly, a wormhole in space that has a potentially infinite number of exits, meaning that enters it gets spit out at random into ANY place in the universe. It just so happened that the AllSpark was still drawn to the Great Machine on Earth regardless of where it got spat out.

It's war, violence can be expected. And in this case, it seems the best way to end a war is to annihilate those threatening said life. Optimus just became more of a warrior than a philosopher in the movies, and to me thats cool. slight tweak to the character :BOT:

That's cuz the movies can't be bothered to go that deep into its own lore, leaving that task to fall to the Movieverse comics and novels instead (back when those were a thing, anyway, in the pre-AOE years).

I know he didn't sent it to Earth on purpose. But if he hadn't jettisoned it off Cybertron, it never would have found its way to Earth in the first place.

It definitely was The Fallen's fault initially, but Optimus still feels like it's his responsibility for involving the humans, I'm sure. That's my point.
