Transformers Legacy Core Slug Available on Amazon + Video Review

Posted by william-james88 Jan 6, 2023 at 10:33am CST 45,058 views
Amazon.com got the new core class Legacy Slug as soon as the new year rolled in and he is still available there at $11.99 even though his wave mats are still on preorder. If you are curious about this toy, Chuckdawk1999 has a review for us which you can see below. He is the first of 6 core class Dinobots that combine into a new Volcanicus toy. The 6th Dinobot will be Skar, like in the IDW comics.

chuckdawg1999 wrote:This is an interesting way to start the Evolution of Legacy. Slug, more commonly known as Slag to long-time fans, is a really fun figure. Transformation is simple but has a few fun steps that leave you satisfied. While this can never replace the SS86 leader, Slug makes for a fun desk toy.

...I believe Baltmatrix already reviewed core Slug.

Think of it like how the original Classics line was only supposed to be a filler line that lived and died from 2006 to 2007. Its sheer popularity led it to take on a whole new life of its own, with Universe serving as a direct continuation and expansion. So too has Studio Series 86 surpassed its original intention.

Likely going to pass on these Legacy Core Dinobots. Maybe it's because I still have a lingering bad taste in my mouth over PotP Volcanicus. That set had so much promise, but the Combiner War dynamic made it a floppy mess. We'll see how it all looks when it's finished.

Likely in the SS86 line at some point.
Based on what? :???: It's just as likely if not moreso he'll be in the 2024 mainline instead.

o.supreme wrote:It's odd because as its generally accepted that SS86 was borne simply out of not having enough slots to fit everything in the annual Generations Mainline.
How is it odd when that purpose still exists, thanks to Legacy continuing to give space to non-G1 figures? I'd argue that's why SS86 has been continued and expanded, in fact.

o.supreme wrote:Still while I thought some Siege, and certainly ER and Kingdom releases (of characters that appeared in the 86 Movie) were "good enough" stand ins for SS86, it seems that certainly isn't the case (SS86 Ironhide for example).
Don't overthink it - plenty of them still are (including the SIEGE and ER versions of Ironhide, because SS86 Ironhide is a failure joke waste of plastic). But some, namely Kingdom UM & the Kingdom repack of ER Arcee, were just rush-job stand-ins so that they had some sort of representation of the movie-introduced characters on the shelves for the 35th anniversary.

SS86 Ironhide feels like a case of them having a spare slot and deciding to see if they could use it to do a more definitive version of him just because he was in the movie. But it wasn't effort well spent, I'd say, because he's ultimately just ER with an integrated roof. And by D-Max's account is a panel-y mess as a result.

o.supreme wrote:However, while we may get things like a "clean deco" Siege Springer in SS86. I cant see Hasbro doing another Galvatron (especially with the clean version now in Legacy), or another Rodimus or Cyclonus, the Kingdom Versions were for all intents and purposes SS86.
There, I solidly agree with you.

I'm really worried that we still haven't seen hide nor hair of Metalhawk or Twincast. I'm hoping those don't turn out to be misinformation or canceled...

I know this is hypothetical talk, but I do hope a CC Prime ends up being part of the SS86 subline.
I’m so much more likely to buy it if it’s decently screen accurate and free of any extra mainline gimmick of that time, as well as the nasty Siege greebling & battle damage paint apps. I’m so glad that’s all being left in the past, & will never be a part of SS86.
This also makes me glad I never opened my NF Prime; he and Soundwave both look great in that packaging.
The only drawback for me with a CC OP will be the fact that I won’t display the trailer; it will most likely stay packed away.

I’m also glad I never went for that Amazon exclusive 2 pack to get ER Ratchet.

I will agree there’s really no reason for a new Galvatron (although I still wish his color was different), Rodimus, or Cyclonus.
Even for Kup and Blurr who imo were shortchanged with their face sculpts, I don’t see how a retool, or any change could be enough of an improvement to get me to buy another version.
The rest of those two really is all good enough for me.

I would’ve loved for the seekers, Soundwave, Astrotrain, & Shockwave to have joined Ironhide in the SS86 treatment, but knowing that’s not going to happen in 2024, I’ll be done collecting and gone-zo by the time it ever would.

There's that Tenseg Base stand that Takara released with the Optimus redeco of Kingdom Ultra Magnus's cab robot.

Japanese exclusive and it's rather pricy. How about something a little more reasonable?

Core Slag doesn’t have a bad looking bot mode. But everything outside of that, and so far these Core Dinobots are a huge letdown.
Sludge is just atrocious…
And while a lot of the issues stem from the need of function to combine, it’s just sad how bad he really is…
Snarl is my favorite, so if his Core version is good, I may just get him.
In fact, if they’re good, I’d still get Grimlock and Swoop as well.
But I have very little hope for any of this to really happen.

It’s not even that I have too high of expectations; these are Core class figures…
But man, these Dinobots could have been so much better.

The main line Commanders should really be left to large or gimmicky characters that can benefit from the increased price point, SS Commanders should be for characters that need the price point to obtain proper screen accuracy in both modes. We've got our main line Optimus Prime several times over, time for our screen accurate one with fully loaded trailer and I'd rather he wasn't taking up space that could go to a new Fire Convoy, Energon Prime, Tidal Wave and so on. They'll hopefully make the SS Commander interchangeable between SS proper and SS86 and not just SS86 because I'd like to see Scorn as a Commander, he's bigger than Grimlock (who's already pushed the limits of the price point) in the movie and would really benefit from the class (Slug and Strafe can be Leaders).

Hasbro used to sell Transformers branded stands, but they didn't seem to be very popular. I bought a few Gundam Action Bases, they'll hold up a WFC Seeker in their 3mm stand port no problem.

I ordered some of these which should be able to hold up a Deluxe or Core figure just fine since they're basically unmarked figma and Nendoroid stands

I was going to say I can't imagine dropping $80 for a toy and keeping $50 of it set aside, but my Buzzworthy Bumblebee 4-packs would disagree.

I hear ya!

And you could probably get back most of that difference by selling off what you don’t want from those 4 pks.
Which reminds me of selling Rodimus’s trailer for $30 after getting him on sale for $65.
At this point I could just pretend that trailer is in a box in my basement.
Meaning I haven’t missed it one bit.
Meanwhile, I have an extremely good voyager-almost-leader-class figure on my shelf that was only $35.

I probably wouldn’t sell CC Prime’s trailer, but who knows…
Don’t you think he the figure) will be a brand new mold?
I’m betting of the $90, the figure alone will be worth $45+ at least.

I don't know, this is all hypothetical, right? I'm a big fan of the Siege and Earthrise engineering, so I don't think they'd need to reinvent the wheel. There are lots of little things they could clean up for the Earthrise version like the vestigial Siege legs, but I'm not sure how much extra value they could pack into the base figure.

Oh yeah, definitely hypothetical.
Not to mention the current Prime figures(s) are right in scale with all of the other ER figures.
I also wonder what all they could do with the trailer to make it $50 worth, but keep it in proportion with a current Prime mold. By the time this actually happens, an energon axe and a bunch of blast effects will seem like really cheap, lame filler. I get a matrix is a staple, but should that even be counted as an extra anymore??

-edit-
And if the base figure is just a retool, I’d expect a whole lot from that trailer. And yet, past the classic G1 interior stuff, what else is there?

Until we get a look at such a Commander class SS86 Optimus, I'm happy with my Tenseg Base Optimus Prime. I gave him the armor and Delta Magnus head of one of my two SG Ultra Magnus toys, to give him the Super Mode that G1 Optimus never had and should have had back in 1986, but was robbed of by Hasbro's choosing to kill off Optimus an make the Powered Convoy toy a separate character.

Weird, I did the exact same thing when the two came in, it's still next to me that way. I mainly did it out of curiosity, I don't intend to keep it that way since I really like the way Tenseg Prime's colors turned out and I don't like inner Delta/SG UM as much as I like the eHobby Magna Convoy I already have.

As someone with zero standing preorders, I just checked the availability on the listings of that next wave and was told the following:
-Hot Shot is allegedly in stock right now
-Needlenose, Leo Prime, and the 3 Cores are all shipping later in the month
-Scraphook and Tarn still say March 1st thus far
-Can't find the listing for Breakdown

I'm fully expecting 2024 is gonna be SS86 Commander Optimus (since that's where all the WFC-G1 redos are going these days and it keeps them from having to sell a Legacy Commander Optimus for 2 years in a row) who possibly shares parts/engineering with Magnus if Magnus has the cab bot, and Legacy Commander Tidal Wave as the combiner partner and companion piece for Leader Armada Megatron (who I imagine would get repacked around that time) and the antithesis of Armada Prime, as despite my personal want of Titan Tidal Wave, I think the current design team would want to work in that combination for the play value and the cross-sell with Megs.

As someone with all of them on order (except core Thundercracker), I can confirm Slug arrived Tuesday and Sludge, Hot Shot, Needlenose and Leo Prime all say arriving Wednesday for me. All the others still say March 1st, but those are very likely to be changing soon as well.

^ Yep, got my Core Slag yesterday. This is the 1st Core class toy I've purchased. Not bad, but definitely could have used some more articulation in the limbs, but perhaps that would have compromised the stability of the combined mode? Anyway... not bad for a budget figure. Sludge is scheduled to arrive for me next Wednesday (1/11) as well, though it actually hasn't shipped yet.

Also, I was kind of hoping for Hasbro to send out a "Back in stock" notice yesterday, they were doing them each Friday for a while, but haven't done so in about a month, maybe they are taking inventory for the end/beginning of the new year? I honestly dont think Minerva ever even appeared anywhere near me. I've checked at least a dozen Walgreens stores, about half of them had Red Alert, (So I've probably seen at least 30 Red Alerts Recently), and the other half had nothing.

For me, on the other hand, reducing the level of surface detailing and getting rid of the battle-damage ultimately led to me stopping buying mainline figures. It just hasn't been the same since Siege, in terms of visual interest or quality (with a couple of exceptions, and apart from the Beast Wars cast).

I want my plastic robot toys as far away as possible from the simplistic designs of the '84 cartoon, please. I'm not eleven any more, and that series' designs were what - three years out of thirty-eight? It baffles me how dominant they still are. But I guess that's why restaurants have menus!
