Excited to get your mitts on Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark, to be released in three days? How about to go view Transformers: Age of Extinction, to be generally released in six days? Can only afford one of the two?

Why not both?

Video game retailer GameStop has you covered! If you buy a brand new copy of Transformers: Age of Extinction on day one (24 June, this coming Tuesday), you will receive a pair of goodies: an exclusive poster featuring characters from the game and two digital tickets to see Transformers: Age of Extinction in theaters! Also, Powerup Rewards Pro Members will gain up to 40% in-store credit if they trade in any games or accessories toward a brand new copy of the game!

So after watching a video that contains all the cutscenes of Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark's story, I'm feeling a little mixed.

The Fall of Cybertron components are good, but the Age of Extinction component felt thrown in there just because the new movie's coming out in three days. Not to mention that ten of the fifteen missions take place in the Fall of Cybertron setting. Also, it doesn't really explain how the Dark Spark is able to traverse between dimensions. I was also expecting some inter-dimensional shenanigans going on, like having both Optimus Primes meet and team up to defeat their common enemy.

Overall, I feel this is more of an expansion of Fall of Cybertron with a bonus "this is what an Age of Extinction game would look like if it were made by High Moon Studios" scenario than an actual game. I'll still get the game, but it won't be anytime soon.

Any notable contradictions between FOC and Cybertron portions of ROTDS?

Only one I seem to find was that Megatron was in his post-Metroplex body. Beyond that, no. Though oddly, the main menu shows Megatron in his pre-Metroplex body. It also accounted for how Shockwave meets the Insecticons. No Fall of Cybertron Grimlock in the story, and Age of Extinction Grimlock doesn't speak at all, beyond roaring.

I think you'll be comfortable placing this story in within the main universe (apart from the Megatron quibble).

Does it take place between WFC and FOC, or between events within FOC?

The Cybertron portion is within Fall of Cybertron, as they promised. The Ark had not yet launched.

Shockwave meeting the Insecticons makes it sound like it takes place before FOC since he's already familiar with them prior to that game, having sicced them on the Lightning Strike Coalition Force in the game's pre-story events (and in its prequel comic).

I don't think it specifically said when it was taking place other then before the Ark was launched.

Checking back at the Game Informer article I transcribed, that does seem to be the case. Go figure.

Meanwhile, back on the robots’ home planet, Owen explains that this new game occurs before the resolution of Fall of Cybertron – which concludes with the majority of the cast departing the planet.

I heard escalation wasn't working earlier. Anyone have experience with that? Can anyone provide a quick review?

Escalation wasn't working on 360, it was fine on PS3, I played one game of it on Broken Hope (WFC remake.)

I think Escalation is better then it was in FoC but still has the stupid wave limit. 8 maps come loaded on the disc, with a shit load of characters. Gameplay wise it's solid, if it was like WFC with no wave limit I would love it to death. But to get to wave 15 right now takes like 30 minutes, not long at all to beat a horde type game. So generally I think it's an improvement from FoC but not as good as WFC.

Hey guys im new here but been on the site for a few years. just wanted to give you a little review I guess for the game. If you own FOC keep it for the sole purpose of PvP multiplayer. Rise has combined the first 2 games escalation modes into 1 with the ability to have any character on any map which we didnt get in FOC. Gameplay wise, this is exactly the same as FOC in every way with the few addition gimmicks added for abilities in both modes. so basically if you keep or go buy FOC and have this it will equal to 1 Game pretty much just switch back to fall if you feel the need for some TDM. If anyone has 360 feel free to add me for some escalation, I purchased the game today but unfortunately i have to wait until tomorrow to play all day so feel free to give me a message to play.

What retailer did you go to? If you didn't go to GameStop, that might be why, since those day one deals are exclusive only to GameStop.
