Transformers Studio Series 86 Ironhide Found at Target in US

Fellow Seibertronian notsoalex found Transformers SS 86 Ironhide at a Target in NY, for $33.99. We know there will also be a non exclusive Ratchet sharing this mold next year. For those wondering about the open box, this is the middle ground Hasbro seemed to find. Some fans would preffer a closed box to this, would you?

If you want more info on the packaging, it was discussed in depth at the latest round table discussion with Hasbro:

Q: Transformers boxes, can they go full closed box like other Hasbro lines?
A: Unlike Marvel and Star Wars, the Transformers brand skews younger, so seeing the robot inside does bring in more sales than a closed box with the image of the character. Transformers is not as character focused line like Marvel, it isn’t the character itself that sells the toys, it’s how the bot looks. There have been studies done and open windows are best for their target audience of 8 year olds seeing the robots on shelves. The leader class toys are higher priced and thus not likely an impulse purchase by parents, so they can look more like a toy aimed at collectors. Looking into all different boxing options, but right now open box for lower priced toys is the best for Transformers brand.

I guess I'll be checking Target tomorrow. I'm curious to see some comparison shots regarding height and bulk next to some other SS86 guys.

I'm pretty high on Siege Ironhide, but this might just replace him.

Hopefully this means Hot Rod, Crosshairs and The Fallen are on their way soon!

looks a little wee in that box. I hope TF doesn't start doing the fake deluxe thing like SW.

Seriously, that box and the window are way too big for a figure that small. If you sell a deluxe figure at voyager price, and justify it merely by “parts count”, you wind up with spectacles like this. They can’t disguise how dinky the figure is, stuffed into a box that’s obviously too large for it. People got the same sense of insult to the intelligence when opening the box for “leader” Blitzwing and seeing all the empty space. At least with Blitzwing, it was a closed box and Hasbro could fool customers more easily. It’s like buying a bag of chips and finding it half empty when you open it, having been “filled” with air. And the only compensation you get for the rip off is a disclaimer on the bag reading: “contents may have settled during shipping”.

Ironically, as popular as this Ironhide will no doubt be, I probably have a better chance of seeing him before ever see Sludge in a store due to all the Coronation Screamers' still clogging shelves. Who is Ironhides case mate? I assume it's 2 Ironhides and 1 "other". ( Possibly AoE Galvatron or BB Thundercracker whichever short packed in that last assortment), which BRW,I only saw for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

Very interested to he how he stands next to ER Ironhide. He doesn't look much taller, but maybe a bit bulkier?

Nitrogen, Oxygen would cause the chips to rot in the bag.

And all chip bags already come half empty. ;)

Those who are genuinely serious when they complain about that grinds my gears. Not only the nitrogen is a conservative, it also prevent the chips to be utterly CRUSHED inside the bag. A simple fact too many people ignore or just can't think about.

Which is why I don't think chip bags and TF boxes are a good analogy.

Do you think all that space in Ironhide's box would prevent him getting crushed? Maybe if the box was sealed and pumped full of something that acts as a cushion against outside pressure.

What about cereal in a box? By coincidence I just opened a new box this morning. We usually pour the contents into hard plastic containers that keep it fresh, but no joke, the bag was half empty.

Most cereal boxes are flimsy. They would still get crushed if most things heavier than other cereal boxes get stacked on them. Though the box does provide a small measure of additional protection. Not much though.

Hopefully the people whining about Ironhide stick to their guns and leave it on the shelf for the fans that look forward to it.

What a wave! I really enjoy all these figures, I think they knocked them all out of the park!

2022 Wave 1.jpg

Galvatron may be my least favorite of the group, but it's not that I don't like it, I just like the others even more! The transformation is pretty cool, and the bot mode sculpt and proportions are very nicely done!

Sideways pulls off the design extremely well, I love how the arms work in bot mode with the spikes that stick out of the arms and the hands coming out of the tires, even with the buzzsaw blades in the tires! Alt mode is a pretty good recreation of an Audi without being licensed, and the gun from the Wii game is a great callback!

I will admit that I am strongly Bumblebiased, but DOTM Bumblebee is my favorite of the bunch! It's my favorite look for Bumblebee, and the amount of retooling they did is actually really impressive! The SS-49 mold was excellent as-is, but all the little changes for the DOTM model really elevate this figure!

Now bring on the next wave! Very excited to get them all in-hand and painted up!

Or maybe they don't know? It wasn't THAT long ago I learned about nitrogen in the bags.

I was today years old when I learnt it.

The nitrogen thing, maybe. But the "air" itself functioning as "padding" to prevent the chips from becoming a fine paste should be obvious.

Cereal is typically more resilient than thin potato chips and the small pieces are more likely to shift when pressure is applied rather than just sit there and get crushed.

I agree that the wave was pretty good. I personally really liked Sideways, there were some awesome cues thrown into him. Thundercracker was also really good, I love the dark blue they used. Bee was solid, and that mold has been pretty good. Galvatron wasn't the best, but he's still OK.

I am stoked for Hot Rod, Crosshairs, and the Fallen. I have a very specific set of circumstances that might let me get Ironhide too if I find him at Target this week.
