Just did, and it's still a shade of teal, it could be confused for gray depending on the lighting/shading, but it's definitely teal.
Yeah, outside of some instances of bad lighting or unremastered/badly-remastered video, Kup has definitely always been a very dull shade of teal green in the cartoon.

Even Takara with their unhealthy obsession with show-accuracy has colored every Kup toy in some kind of green shade.

Some parts are lighter than others but generally there is obvious gray on his head and several other spots.

A tertiary color does not make it his primary color (that'd be the same as saying that since he has orange on him, that he should instead be colored orange), the rest of him is clearly teal-green, and a darker shade of teal-green >:oP

Yeah, the only parts on him that are indisputably gray are his face, his helmet "jewel", his belt (a darker shade), and... his hands? (okay, that one might be disputable)

Let's be fair, anyone who has thoroughly watched G1, especially the third season of G1 knows that the animation was extremely inconsistent but grey Kup was all over the place. Was he colored brighter or lighter sometimes? Sure, but there was plenty of gray on him in the cartoon and enough that you would think of all the redecos we'd have a primarily gray Kup by now.

But he isn't, he's predominantly teal-green, while it may at times skew towards grey, it's most likely due to attempts at lighting and would not justify coloring every release of him as grey, and you might just have a slight case of color blindness

Yeah, that's definitely pale teal and dull teal on him in that pic.

Plus, as I said, with how show-accuracy-obsessed Takara is, that they've always colored Kup's toys predominately green and never predominately gray should say something about how he was colored in the cartoon.

And don't forget that Floro Dery designed Kup for the 1986 movie, with Kup's 1986 toy being based on Dery's design. Kup's toy came second to his cartoon model, meaning his toy's colors were derived from his cartoon colors.

Three points. 1) I am not even remotely color blind. 2) I said that the animation was inconsistent and I can see at times where teal and dull teal come from. 3) I didn't say every version had to be gray, I just figured we'd have at least one with major gray in him by now.

Did you seriously say THAT pic was all teal and no gray???

But to your point, Takara does go out of their way to be show accurate so that is why I was surprised. Btw, Blurr's cartoon colors are very different from his toy's too. Were they designed by the same person/team? And what about Galvatron? I honestly don't know how designed all of the 86 figs, other than some of them being completely original.

Floro Dery is usually credited with the initial, overly-detailed, design sketches upon which the toys are based. However, the designs were refined for the cartoon, with changes the toys never saw. Also complicating things is that it usually resulted in two character models, an older and a newer one, being used by different studios, at the same time. Go compare Broadside between episodes (or even in the same episode!).
The resident Rewind... well, half of one

- Jelze Bunnycat =:3

Looking for:
- TR Furos (Hardhead's head) and Crashbash (lost him :()
- PotP Punch head
- TR Galvatron right arm (the gun one)
- CW Brake-Neck/UW Wildrider, CW Offroad
- TR Twinferno & Grotusque
- Greenlight, Lancer and PotP Elita-1 (plus repro Victorion hands and feet?)

Is this another one of those "Dress" things - as yes that looks grey to me as well.

Oh and the dress was Gold & white for me.

--------

Anyway about Blurr I agree that having his shoulders pointed up is a good way to further distinguish him from Drift.

Also to anyone having issues with weapon storage with that mould - I'd suggest slipping the sniper rifle or drifts sword between the window glass and the door on the side skirts it acts as an extra holster quite nicely and doesn't get in the way as much as anything attached to the back does.

Further complicating the issue is the episode Chaos where Kup is shown clearly in both color schemes, although the teal represents the young Kup.

Thanks, as I figured it confirmed I have normal color vision.

I think the prior explanation about them using multiple models for the same character is the correct one. I know I'm not insane in that sometimes he is really a mix of light gray/dark gray and that explains why in some shots you do see more of a teal base.

We have to remember this is the same cartoon that gave us stuff like this.

I think the fading of the teal is intended to show the extreme age of Kup. All of us old guys tend to start graying over time..

(And I'd say that both look like shades of teal to me in this pic too. Might be personal bias in that I always considered Kup pale teal in color....might be monitor settings. If anyone has a few hours I'll tell you all about trying to quality inspect packaging to Pantone color sheets. It might require barrels of ale to get through... :-s)

There are other pics you could make the argument on but really not that one. He's multiple shades of gray here clearly.

I very much see dark dull teal and very pale teal on his body.

I took it as teal might have been his original color but he "grayed" over time just like people with brown hair eventually turn gray.

I did make the dress reference as a joke, but I think it's worth noting that if there's anything we did learn from it; it's that different people can perceive colours differently - some people legitimately saw the dress as White and Gold, some legitimately saw it as Black and Blue. I think this is a similar case where some see Kup as Gray and some see him as Teal/Green.

His face and helmet dot are gray, but that's it.

There are other pics you could make the argument on but really not that one. He's multiple shades of gray here clearly.
I very much see dark dull teal and very pale teal on his body.

Haha well take the test and see how you do

There's also the matter of the overall quality of the video to consider. Taking the pic Delicon posted, here are two larger versions of the same scene yet with Kup colored differently in both due to the differences in video quality between the two:

He's tinted yellower in the top one and bluer in the bottom one.
