A Quick Question About FT Grenadier (Bombshell)

Does anyone know the purpose of those sliding panels on the side of Fans Toys Grenadier/Bombshell's lower legs? I can't figure out why they're on sliders in either mode.

Isn't it to allow the foot to have full movement without breaking the sculpt completely? That's what I always assumed. If you use a deep tilt it moves down to cover the gap.
