Brawl or Devastator?
Ok, I'm mainly just starting this to see if anybody has a definate answer. We all know of the goof-up in the subtitles of the movie about Brawl being called by his code name Devastator. But recently, due to a line I had in my sig, I've been getting a lot of people trying to "inform" me that no, it wasn't a goof, cause Bay said in an announcement that he decided to change the name back. Personally, I thought Hasbro was given the rights on naming characters, hence why aside from a few main characters all the others are never named in the movie (waiting for Hasbro to finalize the names of the characters...mainly the decepticons aside from Megs & Gorilla/chicken-scream), which is what Bay told fans in an earlier message explaining the code names (Soundbyte, Vortex/Incenerator, Devastator).
So what's his name?
So what's his name?

Oh, christ. Not again.
For the absolute, last time. His. Name. Is. Brawl.
The writers said it was a mistake in the subtitles. That's all it was.

That's really what I think too, but I keep hearing people say no, Bay changed it back. Honestly, I was hoping someone could come up with some sort of proof one way or the other...i.e. link to an interview with Bay, Hasbro stating that they had sole rights to name the guy....something more than just some of the newbies on the site justs stirring up stuff (not saying the newbies are unwanted, just that as with everywhere, there are always a few bad apples in the barrel).Darth Bombshell wrote:Oh, christ. I take it this argument has been up several times before already? I really don't know...I don't browse the movie forum too terribly much, but I haven't seen it before.

Yes, this issue has been brought up before. Many times in fact. So many times, that each time I see a new post, I get more than a little irritated, so forgive me if I come off seeming like that.
And Bay's wrong on this. As much as I like the movie, that one thing I will peg as a problem he created.

I agree that Bay has caused all sorts of problems with this. However I don't know why the writers are saying that it was a subtitle mess up. Although I wasn't there (and sorry I don't have a link to post), a Mod from another board I visit was there and Bay answered this question on June 13th at a press conference in Sydney. He changed his mind in the last stages of editing.
I'm going with Bay on this one. His name is Devastator.
Although this could of all been solved with a little bi of communication between Hasbro and Bay.

It isn't just the writers that have said that the proper name is Brawl. Hasbro has as well. They specifically said this at BotCon, and this site has an article on that which states this quite clearly. The use of the name "Devastator" was a continuity error, and should have read "Brawl". Bay knew this as far back as last August, since he was the one to anounce the finalized list of names, which included the name "Brawl".

The problem is, that the corresponding action figure/toy that has come out is called Brawl.
The mix up is all due to Bay. If you pull up the article in Wikipedia, he even says that he wanted to go with "Devestator" because he thought it was better sounding. He explicitly went against Hasbro's wishes in naming the character. It definitely wasn't a *mistake* as some would have you believe. It was an intentional stance going against the company line.

All of the other media surrounding the movie also uses the name Brawl. Whether or not Bay chose to use the name "Devastator" at the last minute, it wasn't his call to make, and created a serious continuity error, one which, hopefully, will be fixed on the DVD.

Yeah, even the game has him named as Brawl. I'm really hoping it gets fixed on the DVD, otherwise this is going to keep going on. Not to mention, it will cause problems if they actually try to introduce the "real" Devastator in a later movie.Tramp wrote:megrimlock wrote:The problem is, that the corresponding action figure/toy that has come out is called Brawl.

Anyway, What I was wanting people, was links to articles saying one way or another what his name is...something a bit more concrete than just "I heard someone say that Bay said...."
Edit: here is a link to an article on this site that Bay himself wrote:
http://www.seibertron.com/news/view.php ... devastator
"It is a bit tiresome to watch all the supposed script leaks on Don Murphy's site. There has been a lot of chatter about character names and what 'things' may be called in the script. I'm going to let everyone in on a little secret. Something that the writer's don't know, nor my crew, or Steven Speilberg, or the president's of Paramount or Dreamworks. Not even Don Murphy who is not involved on the day to day with this movie. Many of the names in the script are aliases. The only people that know the real names of many of these characters are the COO of Hasbro, their corporate lawyer and myself. I think this is two less people that knew the secret recipe for coca-cola. On my directing contract I had to sign all these non disclosure agreements just on this character name point. These names will not be revealed until the toy boxes are printed. The writer's had to construct the script where no actor needed to verbally refer to a character by name other then the main few. So rest assured AKA Devastator, is really not Devastator.
Michael"

Whatever he name is/should have been, its Devastator in the film, and if we are to get 2 more TF movies how are they going to get round this problem when they actually get to the point where the REAL devastator makes an appearance? Are we gonna see a name change, or are millions of people going to see two bots with the same name appear?

Brawl/Devastator error in Movie is just a continuity error. It is supposed to be Brawl.

Eh, considering that Han no longer shoots first, & for a while Spike didn't say, "Oh, sh*t," This could be changed as well.Sonray wrote:Whatever he name is/should have been, its Devastator in the film, and if we are to get 2 more TF movies how are they going to get round this problem when they actually get to the point where the REAL devastator makes an appearance? Edit: I also looked into what Wikipedia's TF movie page said about Brawl, & found this:
The official names were confirmed in August 2006. Bay himself was not fully aware of these official names, and this led to Brawl being referred to as Devastator, his on-set name.
...& unless I missed something, that's all it mentioned referring to the Brawl/Devastator mixup.

I don't really care if it's canon-correct, but if the tank dude's called Devastator in the movie, then, dammit, I'm gonna call him Devastator. In THIS continuity he's Devastator. He can be Brawl anywhere else. You guys can call him Brawl. But what the movie calls him is what I call him.
...or we could just call him 'tank dude'.

the writers dont mean much...they are the same ones that kept updating the gapping holes in the movie to "this is what really happen" we just never mentioned it before and there is nothing on film to support that.
another reason i dont care what the writer says is because they were among the first ones that screened the movie and saw the first cuts and what not...so they should have fixed it then and there....he is and will forever be devastator
