Well that explains a lot. I scoured the internet trying to figure that out. I knew the mold (intimately to be exact), but the colors are whack. Hold on now.... I did some Googlin...
"When Transformers proved an unqualified success, plans for a 1985 Diaclone line were scrapped, and Transformers was imported to Japan in its place. These aborted toys, which would have been part of a sub-line called Jizai Gattai ("Free Combination") were then incorporated into the Transformers toyline in 1986 as the Aerialbots, Stunticons, Combaticons, Protectobots, and Metroplex."
Now, maybe it was a fever dream, but I coulda swore I've seen some pre-Transformers Protectobots. They must have existed at some point as prototypes. Where else does a red Hotspot come from... I know, G2, but... why do I have this image in my head of an old timey Defensor in red?
