With criticism, RotF potentially leaving a bad taste in people's mouths, sequels not always doing as well, fair amount of competition, etc., what exactly is drawing in so many people? 3D would help recoup some loses, but DotM seems to be doing so well so effortlessly, which is pretty neat actually.
Do Transformers/Bay/Spielberg have that much brand power?
Apparently more people liked ROTF than didn't.
Doubtful. DotM is doing really well most likely to word of mouth, and perhaps even on Bay's promise to make up for the disaster that was RotF. DotM turned out to be the best of the 3 films in every way and a lot of people have gone to see it repeatedly. I will go see it for the 5th time tomorrow night. Haven't seen it in a couple of weeks. Having said that, I did see RotF in theaters 4 times, as I was very impressed by the visuals and the action. But by the time it came out on DVD, that wore off, and I was left with a total utter **** of a story.

Except Sly's absolutely right. You don't hit $800+ million in ticket sales because people hate your movie. That's just a simple fact. Quite simply the Transformers films public opinion is vastly different than the opinion of critics and the vocal minority that dislike it. I figure we've come to that conclusion since 2007.
Edit: Oh, and it sold about 2 million DVDs right off the bat as well. Again, you don't get those numbers when people hate a movie.
Double Edit: Note I'm not saying you're wrong for disliking it either.

Oh, that's fine. I was just giving my take on it. Like I said, I saw it 4 times in theaters. I made my contribution. But viewpoints and opinions change with the passage of time, and I am sure I wasn't the only one. What I was trying to get at with my previous post that IMO most people didn't go see DotM because they loved RotF so much. They went because, well, it's a summer blockbuster about giant robots. And this one was about them much more than the previous 2. The TFs were actually center stage in DotM, except for Sam and Carly. And I'm sure Paramount's marketing department didn't slack off either.

Your ability to grasp sarcasm is poor. Calling people who enjoy CGI effects collectively simple minded is an insult no matter how you swing it.

Skyline earned enough money to warrent a sequel, so I lost my faith in humanity way earlier.

It should be in theaters through next weekend, it can scrounge up $50 mil worldwide in 12 days, can't it?
And I never saw Avatar. Never had the urge. Should I feel proud or stupid?
