Giving up on the DS...buying a PSP

Postby Galvatron628 » Wed Apr 15, 2009 2:09 pm

Well I give up. I simply am not enjoying my DS. I take it with me to work every night yet I haven't even powered it on in 3 months. My friends at work have all their pretty PSP's that have widescreens, can play movies, and feature PS2 graphics.

I loved my DS when I first got it, but soon thereafter I ran out of games to buy for it. I really don't know why I just didn't go with the PSP in the first place, probably because I loved the GBA, and I figured it would make sense to get the successor to the GBA, but I was wrong.

Now don't get me wrong, there are plenty of good games on it, that is if you are into RPG's, which at this point in my life I'm not. And the graphics for the most part just flat out suck on the system, but the real kicker for me, is the limited storage space on the gamecards. I think from my understanding the largest amount of storage one can hold is 256MB, in comparison to Sony's 2GB UMD discs. The result is games with poor textures and virtually no audio. Take Grand Theft Auto: China town wars for instance. No liscensed radio stations, and no speech, just subtitles instead. What is this 1999 or 2009?

As for the games I have:

Super Mario 64 DS: Great game, but the lack of an analog stick eventually caused me to give up on it. Parts I was able to easily beat on the N64 were damn near impossible using the D-pad, and the "virtual stick" just doens't work right!

New Super Mario Bros: Awesome game, but way too short. Honestly its really just a watered down Super Mario World, with much better graphics.

Star Fox Command: Another game thats just way too short and way to simple. I was expecting more of the mission based style game from the N64 and SNES

Sonic Rush: Really a pretty awesome game, just found out after I got it I'm over the old Sonic gameplay, and in fact, Its a lot harder than I remember!

Guitar Hero On Tour/ Guitar Hero on Tour: Decades: Both were awesome but the storage space issue came into play no doubt, as playing the same 25 songs on each game gets old quick. After beating both on Easy and Medium and finding out there were no more songs to unlock, I had no desire to play through hard or Expert.

Phanton Hourglass: Probably easily the best game on the DS, but the redudent trips to the gawd awful "Temple of the Ocean King" caused me to quit playing it half way through. I have no problem with figuring out the Zelda puzzles but putting a time limit on it sucks! Hopefully the Big N won't do something so stupid in the next DS Zelda!

Mario Kart: Fun game but its the same old game I've been playing for years since 1992 or whenever it came out.

I think where the DS really shines at is Multiplayer, as I'll have a blast when me and my wife play eachother at Mario Party, Guitar Hero, or Mario Kart, however finding people with DS's is becoming increasingly difficult. I will however be keeping it for the occasional good releases, and for those nights when me and my wife stay home.

My wife seems to really enjoy hers, but she has simpler tastes in games than I do. 90% of the DS library is nearly identical to 90% of the Wii library where its just simple gimmicky crap designed to use the touch screen. My wife can get into those games, I can't.

I'm hoping to have my PSP next week. I really can't wait honestly. I'm still torn on what games to get for it, as there are so many good games that are dirt cheap on the system. Probably gonna pick up Siphon Filter and Killzone for it.

Well, if you're willing to trade in the total number of good games for unimportant things such as graphics or sound, it's a good call. Remember, if the game is good enough, graphics really should not be an issue.

Crisis Core, God of War, Dracula X Chronicles, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, and Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops. That's the whole list of "must have" games for the PSP. Guess how many of those lasted more than a week? I'll give you a hint: less than one.

but that's just it... I see more games that interest me on PSP than DS. As of now I already own about every game I want on DS. Hell where's Fzero DS at? Sony already has 2 Wipeouts on PSP. Not just that but also Resistance, killzone, and Siphon Filter! Also pre-orders are out for little big planet and Motorstorm! DS just got its first gta but Yes the PSP has 2 of those too!

It all depends what your into. Its not even that the DS library sucks I mean its a huge library but it doesn't appeal to all.

I played Killzone: liberation last night on my friends PSP, think I'm going to pick that up and GTA: Vice City stories for starters. Definitly want to check out Resistance:Retribution as well as both Siphon Filter games in the near future

Got mine today... And after 2 1/2 hours playing with it I have to say HOW IN THE HELL IS THE DS OUTSELLING THIS THING? The PSP is like a 100 times better! The interface is nearly identical to the PS3! I set it up with my wifi, I was surfing the web on it, browsing the playstation store, etc. the memory stick I put in was from my old Sony Erricson z750a cell phone, and when I stuck it in, all my photos from my old phone and ringtones appeard in the system menu. I also noticed on the playstation store, you can buy nearly every game available for PSP and save it to the memory stick! I fired up Vice City stories, just like a home console GTA, audio, everything. I really couldn't imagine china town wars being as good, especially with a birds eye view and no audio.

In hindsight I probably should of just bought this thing instead of DS

Smaller library, shorter battery life, higher price tag...there's a lot of reasons.

had a higher price tag...thats the key thing. At $169 the DSi and the PSP are now the same price, and the PSP can do 20times more things than the DSi.

And I won't argue the DS library is larger, however, just like its home console counterpart, 90% of the library is crap, and it has an IGN average score of like 4.5 while the PSP has an average score of like 7 or something. If all I had was a PSP I wouldn't be jealous of all those people who owned the "imagine: <insert blank here>" games, or Cooking Mama or some other stupid POS that shouldn't exist anyway.

Heres why I think the DS is so popular:

#1. Its Nintendo. They've had a reputation for the best portable systems since the Gameboy came out. I fell into the trap myself with this. I enjoyed my Original gameboy and gameboy advance so much, that it seemed like a no brainer to get a DS instead of a PSP.

#2. Kids. Portables always have and always will be more popular among the younger audience, and The DS really does succeed well and stomps the PSP on that market. But on that note I think thats why the PSP appeals so much to me, and many of my friends. its the Adult's handheld.

I haven't turned on the DS in about a year. A YEAR. Why? It has no games worth playing. Sure, it has a few that are fun: Starfox Command, TFA, etc.

Yeah I got Mario Kart and Guitar Hero: on Tour Decades for Christmas which expanded my interest in the system for a month or so, but I haven't turned it on since January. I tried to make the best out of the DS, but I eventually just came to the conclusion it was time to switch to the PSP.

It's a good series. More like a book than a game but somehow out of that it still proved to be very fun.

Well what has it been 2 weeks later, and I'm still lovin the PSP... I'm stuck on both my games for it, so I bought Crises Core today. Haven't popped in in yet. When I'm not watching a game, I've been downloading TV shows and re-encoding them for it. Nothing can compare to laying back in an office chair at work and watching the latest episode of "Chuck" on my PSP during break.

But I still don't think my time with the DS is completly over just yet...

yeah i think this is much better ,good solution..now i know B-)

Re: Giving up on the DS...buying a PSP

Postby Galvatron628 » Sat Jul 11, 2009 2:48 pm

I think I'm going to be knocking the dust off the DS here soon. I've been dying for some TF action in a video game, and if you look at Review scores for Revenge of the Fallen, the DS Version got the highest (even higher than than the Xbox 360 and PS3), and is supposively pretty fun to play, while the PSP got the exact opposite: The worst version of the game. Not only that but it actually is one of the worst games ever on the PSP! And Shadowman you were right about RPG's, actually RPG's seem to be a better solution for Portables, as they keep my interest longer. I've been addicted to Crises Core, and I'm going to buy FFVII off PSN soon so I can play it on my PSP. But when it comes to Squaresoft, the DS definitly has the PSP owned in that category, so I might pick up FFIV on the system. I'm not to crazy about Chrono Trigger though. Just think its half-assed honestly. NOt the game itsself but the fact Square just released the exact same game that was released on the Super NES 20 years ago and didn't update anything, and then put a $35 price tag on it. Talk about milking a game for all its worth!
