Interesting, that must have been during the time I wasn't purchasing toys

There would be horrible compromises, as already explained else where in the thread by people more versed then me. If you want a smaller unicron then I suggest getting one of the many versions of Armada Unicron.

A lot of people would presuming it makes him cheaper. I know a lot of people are excited about how big he is, but I don't get why those people have to claim it's impossible for him to be smaller and would be a completely different figure if he was.

I just don't get what compromises would be made for a smaller version. It just doesn't make sense to me. We've seen so many molds in multiple scales, even by Hasbro themselves. It wouldn't change anything for me if he was a little more hollow, didn't come with a stand, etc. I just don't care to have him be so big, at a certain point it's just past the size of something I want. It doesn't have to be the exact same mold either, or have the same level of detail. Primus still looks fantastic to me, and he's inches smaller than a Titan. If we got a commander class Unicron out of nowhere, some people would be upset he's not a titan, but many would still be thrilled to have him, me included.
EDIT: Sorry for the double post!
