Hello I wanted to talk with you all about this for bit. My personal bias is that I don't find it accurate.
Not trying disparage anyone who uses it or trying to reverse time and saying people should stop, many have adopted this term (even people who are fan of the films).
I believe there are so many people involved in making these films, that doesn't feel right to me to narrowing it down to one person.

While I agree that it might be disparaging to everyone else who puts on the effort to make these films, having them be directed by Michael Bay was a big selling point of the first film, alongside the promotions for the Camaro and the fact that it was a live action Transformers movie ! Back then Bay actually had good vibes when it came to summer blockbusters, so his name on the first film was definitely a plus.

Then came RoTF. And while I mainly blame the clusterfvck it became on the writers' strike, the fact that it was left up to Bay to finish the story on his own and he failed spectacularly put him out of favor with a lot of fans. He had the opportunity to redeem himself with DoTM, even though he didn't contribute to the story (as far as I know), it still missed on some elements of the lore, wasting some characters and ideas.

The other thing about Bay is that he's the only constant in the movies besides Bumblebee and Optimus. All other elements get changed both in front and behind the camera. And for better or worse he's now forever associated with the franchise, or rather the franchise is associated with him, thus the terms "Bayverse" and "Bayformers."

So whether it's viewed as appropriate or derogatory, I believe it's accurate.

I'll second this. The other part is that being the director is kind of like being the president. No Bay didn't specifically decide every detail of the film, but the buck ultimately stops with him, so his name gets attached. Just like how the president doesn't decide ever detail of every policy, but credit or blame ultimately sticks to him for anything that happens while he's in office.
