Illegalness Question

Postby Blitz Magnus » Wed Nov 07, 2007 6:27 pm

This doesn't concern Transformers, but if anyone can clarify this for me, I would be very grateful. I know it does seem out of place, but I don't know where to ask

1-Is it illegal to use Windows Sound Recorder and record music off the internet if it is nearly impossible to find and download?

2-I make stopmotion movies and put em on youtube.com, and I get ALL my background music and voices through sound recording these off other sources of the internet, such as a video playing.

In summary: Is it illegal to sound record music?
AND is it illegal to use this sound recorded music in a movie that I will post on youtube and give credit to?

Example of Credit:What I've Done, by Linkin Park

Any help is much appreciated.

PS-Should I post this in the General Discussion forum instead?

It IS illegal, but the fun part is, it's totally untraceable! And, hell, the only thing that COULD trace it is Spyware! And if the RIAA uses that to catch you, you could sue their asses right back for infecting your computer with spyware!

And it's okay if you use it in YouTube videos, since you could pass that off as saying you have the CD, and give proper credit in the video.

Hmm, ok, many thanks

So if I pop in the Transformers Movie DVD(Which I do own) and record the voices, with proper credits, this would be legal, correct? :???:

Oh, and what is RIAA?

"Recording Industry Association of America," or, more accurately, "Really Irate Assholes Association."

Of course, it may be different if you don't live in the US, but they can still get you. (Well, not on this, but you get the idea)

Also yes.

That's the beauty of it! Legally, they can't! It's impossible unless they put spyware into your computer, which, if that were to happen (And it's very unlikely) you could easily sue them for a large amount of money!

OooOo

Considering all this I think I should only record sounds and music that I could in some way obtain.

Usually I record off other videos, but maybe I should stick to small things, just to make things easy.

Anywho, thanks so much for the clarification, and I will post again, if I have anymore questions :D

You didn't even look, did you? The music plays only on the site. To download it, you'd have to buy it off of iTunes or Amazon.com.

And yes, it does have Transformers music. It has a lot of Transformers music. You just have to look.

While it is illegal to record and use music you do not own, most production companies don't mind if you use it in a fan video. It's extra promotion for whatever they're selling. Look at all of the Star Wars fan films. All of them use Ben Burt's sound effects and James Williams score, but they don't get in trouble. George Lucas applauds them for adding to his universe and actually supports what they do.

Though if you're only recording it off of something to listen to on CD, you should burn in Hell.

Pfff, I don't record just to listen :P

Anyway, I just looked at the site, and thanks for it :D

So through using music and effects in Transformers stopmotions, this advertises for them :-?

Thanks
