Was there ever a Black Optimus Prime in the comic series or TV series that mimics the e-Hobby Exclusive THS-02 Black character? And was he popular?

As far as I know the Black Convoy toys are just repaints, and have never appeared in the series, though I have read a few fanfics, wiht black Convoy and Black Rodimus being clones.

Did the G2 Prime ever coat himself with the special black paint in the cartoons as it is described by eHobby?

Nucleon Quest Convoy didn't appear in any media but seems to be what this e-hobby release is based on.

No, he didn't.
He was painted white in The Return of Optimus Prime part 2 to be protected from The Hate Plague to get the Matrix out of Rodimus Prime.

The closest of him being black was in early G2 comic issue where Optimus Prime and several other Transformers were infected by a black oil slick looking aliens that made them insanally violent. But it was just black ooze coming out of him he was never became a black Optimus Prime.
