Revolver joints from revoltech

Postby MacrossFA19 » Thu Feb 22, 2007 12:08 pm

I thought others may like to know. Beings I broke one of my revoltech magnus' original black revolver joints only minutes after opening him, I started casting some of the revolver joints, and primes matrix. They are a pain in the arse to get apart, but none the less. I will post the progress here if any one is interested.

What methods and materials are you using to cast them? I do a bit of casting myself, but I can still only make very simple molds.

I am using a rubber mold, 2 part mixture-liquid. Made by a company called smooth on. The cast itself is 2 part, resin is made by castin'craft and the catalyst also castn'craft. Great stuff with minimal air bubbles. For colored parts, I normally add a few drops (not too much or it will screw up the catalyst) of liquid RIT dye, but lately I have been using tamiya clear paints on them.

I use Smooth-On for the molds and casting resin, but I might give the Castin' Craft stuff a try. Is that the clear stuff that comes in the metal can?
When I want to color mine I use Castin' Craft dye. It's specifically designed for epoxy resins. You can see them here

I usually get good results but they can sometimes make the resin fizz a little. Of course I am crossing company lines, so that might be my problem.
By the way, I hope you're using a resperator. I learned that lesson the hard way.
I'm better now.

I had used the dye before, but like you said the fizz-just kept F**** up my cast. The fizz would cure on my cast, and removing it is a bi***. If you notice, the RIT Dye is almost the same stuff, but cheaper and no fizz. So far all the times I have used it, it has been great.

And yes the castn'craft is the clear resin in a can. The catalyst is in a little plastic bottle.
And no I don't use a respirator, there is no brain dama-jabba-jaba-gabge. I work with it outside, and leave it there for curing purposes.

And just an update. I demolded the cast. The matrix came out perfect, I am painting that today. One half of the revolver joint with the locking mechanism got an air bubble that I didn't see, so I have to recast that. The other half with the ratchet side came out good. Just gotta clean it up, and wait to recast the other half.
