Alive or dead he still has a body, he was also not conscious at the time so it was Rufus' unconscious body. :p

If you watch the opening cinematic you can see him being stretchered into one of the medevac vehicles.

This may seem like the worst kind of pedantry to you, but it's important to me.

If he survived the inferno on Floor 70, what happened then? Did he decide to take a stroll down to Sector 8 while charred and grilled, then pass out on a bench? Did the other ShinRa employees still in the tower not notice a very smoky Rufus on his way through the tower and suggest medical attention? All that runs through my mind is 'what were they thinking'?

They must have some master plan that we as fans are unable to work out yet, or they have become sloppy on continuity.

I thought that it was theorized that he got out through an escape hatch or something like that just as Diamond Weapon's attack hit the tower

You clearly see the fire envelop him though. Plus if he had gotten out that easily, he would have taken control of the company back from Gyahaha and Kyahaha immediately. And it still doesn't explain why he went to Sector 8 to suddenly collapse and get stretchered away.
