In that case the RAM should be good, we were having db lockup issues too before going to 3GB. As long as the CPU load isn't too high this RAM upgrade should hopefully really help the whole site.

The pictures are stored on disk. None of the images are stored in the database. The biggest problem with Seibertron.com is that there is about 300+ database tables that run this website now. It's a massive database. Most websites that I work on have under 80 or maybe even 50. Seibertron.com is just one big massive f'in website.

Yeah big forums are DB hogs on their own, add in galleries and games and wow. They add up quick. We've got 137 tables with just a Forum, some Galleries and a few arcade games.

When I was an engineer I had terraserver and MBNA as my main db "ab"users. They had 2 servers just for DB and 3 Web servers. When Terraserver released those "first ever" Area 51 aerial photography I spent my entire shift for an entire week in a climate controlled server farm constantly rebooting those things when they hung... Not fun!

It might well be.

Loaded in 0.153 seconds did the thread, and the posting page loaded in 0.128.

And the site did crash for about 5min a little while ago.

I looked after the glitch where I couldn't get into the data base. Alas, HMW was still down.

Hence the part about the upper inflection. Often, when someone asks a question, the voice's pitch will get higher as they ask a question.


I was merely enquiring to whether, since the RAM upgrade seems to have gone down well, the game may be turned back on; as the server should (hopefully) now be able to handle it without tripping over itself.

Um... assuming the RAM upgrade is what took the board down, then there is still no reason to immediately flip the switch. While we'd all like to get back to gaming, he can see if the server load has been decreased by the new RAM, this will probably take a little while as people get back on and try to suck up all of the servers resources. If it hasn't helped non-HMW load, it won't help HMW load either. I'd wait until I could watch what was going on to turn it on too.

And we're back up and now with 4GB of RAM
