The head is definitely more american G1 (i dont know if it looked different in the japanese toons) on giant than Herc.

The Japanese and American G1 toons were essentially the same, but the Devestotor show model had two different heads.

And then, of course, there's the toy's head ...

You can't really tell quality unless you have them both in hand. Are we forgetting how long haul's hip needed replacement?

Also, speaking in regards to being G1:
Giant has the shoulders where the entire obvious vehicle is visible, with the treads being right up against the chest. The head is definitely more american G1 (i dont know if it looked different in the japanese toons) on giant than Herc.
It also looks like they made his rifle appear like it does in the show.

They both do take enough liberties with the design that pretty much make the arguement pointless, but I thought I'd mention it anyway, hehe.

Yes I agree with you they both take enough liberties that it is a wash, which is what I meant by "not more (or less) G1" .... The treads not being against the body is really the only thing on Herc that is significant, and I think that it works really well.

The hip problem was a QC issue but seeing as how a complete hip unit was provided to replace it I would say that only boosts the quality of the figure seeing as you would be hard pressedto find a mainstream company that corrects its mistakes so efficiently, let alone acknowledge them. Some things like that go un noticed untill the masses get their hands on it. Like a video game beta if you will.

I plan on getting both but I think Hercules will be the definitive Classics Devastator. Giant may be more G1 accurate with his tread configurations and non-integrated forearms, but the whole point of the Classics universe concept is to update the original characters. Having integrated combiner parts it something I would want for all combiners. Having the forearms transform into generator trailers is clever I'll give them that, but I still prefer the TFC Toys approach. Not that it matters, like I said before I'm getting both! :KREMZEEK:

As for size, it appears Herc is probably about an inch and a half taller head to toe than Giant will be, but going by their highest natural points (not counting optional positioning of the crane or blade on Herc) it looks to be less than an inch...maybe only half an inch. Herc does look to be more 'beefy', but it doesn't look like he'll tower over Giant. In other words, too much seems to be made over the size difference...
