Condolences to those affected. This actually rates as THE worst school shooting ever. Columbine only had 15 fatalities. This has more than double that...it is indeed a bad thing. Rest assured he is getting what's coming to him in the Afterlife...
It finally happened. The Chicago Cubs won the World Series. Yes, I cried.

Its kind of like Basic Instinct, but not in a good way...
Goddammit, now I can't unsee it.

I also live in Virginia, and I have quite a few number of friends that attend there, and I have no idea if they're all right. It's really worrying.

I am a Virginia Tech student who was on campus today.
I have been an avid reader of the site for years, although I do not post much.
I got in at 8:00 AM and was doing Homework in one of the engineering buildings. There are about seven engineering buildings as Tech is a big place.
I received an email about a "shooting incident" in one of the dorms, although information was sketchy and we did not know if anyone had been killed or a police officer's gun had accidentally gone off or what.
Then we got word of a second shooting and were forced to stay indoors away from windows.
This is a very unusual incident for Blacksburg. It is a VERY quiet town. I have lived here my entire life and my family has been here for generations (no, we dont get out much). Before this on average we would have maybe 1 murder every 5 years. There are no "gangs" - there have been one or two instances of graffiti but I would not say it is gang related. The campus is 25,000 students, but during the summer it is a town of only 5000. This is unprecedented and all of us in Blacksburg are shocked and saddened by these events.
Not to be rude but are you really a VT student?
Agreed, I wonder if that's true. I'm about 2.5 hours away from VA Tech and Blacksburg is a booming place. The town/city has gotten so big that it's grown into nearby Christiansburg. VA Tech has caused the place to grow exponentially and develop massive traffic and crime issues.
This is yet another reason why I hate Virginia. Most people here are superficial and ignorant. When I was in high school, mind you I'm 24, I laughed at all my friends who went to VA Tech because it was the "cool, hip place" to go. In this area, going to VA Tech is nothing more than a status symbol of wealth.
Obviously, I don't wish death on the innocent. But, who was the shooter and why did he do what he did? He obviously believed he had a good reason. I want to know more about him.
And I'll be honest, I'm not upset at the guy. Death is just another part of life.
I don't go by Thanos for nothing, I suppose.

My sympathy is with everyone.
As First-Aid said this is the worst shooting, in terms of number of people killed, in a School shooting in the States. It's something which seems to be more and more widespread now, though Canada, the UK and Russia in the last few years.
Well done to Ryan on posting this, I wouldn't have read about this until tomorrow (being in the UK), so now I know to get in contact with those from Virginia who visit our site.
The video they have, on BBC.co.uk, from the students phone, when you can here the gun-shots, is very eerie indeed.
Stats from previous shootings:
1 August 1966 - Sniper Charles Whitman kills 14 people and injures dozens at University of Texas
20 April 1999 - Two teenagers at Columbine High School, Colorado, kill 13 before killing themselves
21 March 2005 - A teenager on an Indian reservation in Red Lake, Minnesota, kills nine

Yes, I am a tech student. I am in the class of 2008 in Electrical Engineering. I was in Whittemore Hall (two buildings over) at the time and we were stuck there for several hours. Norris, where the incident happened, is the location of the ESM department and the Dean's Office. Just last Friday we had a bomb threat to one of the other engineering department buildings. Before this morning, people believed it to just be a student who did not want to take a test. We are all unsure whether or not the two events are connected now. I will admit that Tech has had massive growth during the last ten years. However, the community is still small without the students and this is VERY UNUSUAL for blacksburg. In reply to the comment about wealthy students, we do have some but I personally am lower middle class and had to go somewhere close by due to expenses.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on these unfortunate events with us Ultra_Jetstorm. I'm sorry to hear about what happened at your school today. Very sad and shocking.
To those of you who questioned Ultra_Jetstorm's statements, his IP address is from Blacksburg (where Virginia Tech is located) so please be more sensitive with your comments about whether or not he's from there. He and his schoolmates have gone through a horrific ordeal today. We should be showing our support and keeping the community in our thoughts and prayers. Thanks.

Everything should be kept in the home and prohibited in public; religious texts, drugs, and weapons - then everything would be just fine. I hate this b.s.

Man, sucks to be them......er....condolences to the victims.
One thing that's really going to suck about this: the media is going to blow this waaay out of proportion like they did at the start of the last wave of school shootings, & the next thing you know, you're going to see a bunch of disgruntled kids watching the news & finding new ways to "deal" with their problems, & then we'll see copycats all over the place...just like last time.
....information can be a dangerous thing in the wrong hands...

Absolutely tragic. Three years ago, when I was shopping around for grad schools, I came very close to going there. I totally could've been in that group of 30 dead. It really makes you think.
My condolences to everyone involved.
