I don't know if this was discussed but my freind at work told me in the very last scene at Coney Island that was shot weeks before the monster attacked that if you look closely behind a cruise ship there is something falling out of the sky.

:BOT: Just read about it. Abrams said the monster has been on earth for thousands of years. During the final moments, a satellite falls from the sky and wakes up the monster somehow. Take a look here (a minor spoiler I suppose?), on the very right there's a giant splash. :CON:

No doubt caused when some git on some unknown island accidentally set off an EMP that not only knocked a Oceanic Flight plane out of the air but also a satellite as well.

And the monster is probably some twisted experiment of the Dharma Initiative who will eventually go on to create the warp drive.
Thus tieing all of JJ's recents projects together.

I hope the toy inspires a designer to make a 'Classics' Repugnus.

as much as it pains me to say, but these theories can't be. "Cloverfield" takes place in 2007 or 2008. Oceanic flight 815 went down in 2004.

the monster is unlikely because it presumably originated from the Atlantic. the Dharma Initiative is stationed somewhere in the Pacific.

I love me some LOST :P

It's called sarcasm! :P

Could always go with the theory that "Cloverfield" is some rival organisation to the Dharma Initiative. But nah, enough trying to tie this to JJ's other stuff. It doesn't need to be tainted by the crappyness that is Lost.

I said this on the Reel Horror board and I am saying it here, some of you need to go see the movie and stop relying on friends telling you about it.

Instead of asking us, go see it and formulate your own opinions.
There are so many unconfirmed speculations with the movie about the satellite falling and waking it up to it came from the Marianas trench.

Honestly I put more credence in the Trench idea.

And from what I am reading, the viral sites play into and add to the story as well.
Not a sheeple.

I thought the Laurentian Abyss where they disposed the Decepticons was the deepest part of the oceans

If an animal lives that deep and breathes water how would they come to the surface and breath air?

I'll wait until it goes on DVD to see the satellite falling

I loved the movie but unless I can go with somebody who hasn't seen it I won't see it in a theater again

Ok, between the two trenches here is the tale of the tape..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariana_Trench
The Mariana Trench (or Marianas Trench) is the deepest known oceanic trench, with a maximum depth of about 11 km (6.8 mi), and the deepest location on the surface of the Earth's crust. It is located in the floor of the western North Pacific Ocean, to the east and south of the Mariana Islands, near Guam.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurentian_Abyss
The Laurentian Abyss is a trench in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Canada. It has a maximum depth of 15,305.11 feet or about 2.9 miles below the surface.

As for the object falling, I will try and hook you up with some video of it.
You really cannot tell what it is, it looks like an object falling into the water.

it could be one of those pills you drop in water and it grows into a sponge dinosaur! :P

the viral campaign suggests that it was a Tagruto (the owner's of Slusho! and the company rob may have have gone to work for) satellite, or part of one. also, it has been speculated that the oil mining-thing (i don't remember what they're called) was theirs, too. a note of interest is that a key Slusho! ingredient is found under the sea. how it all really ties together is beyond me, and i'm not too sure we'll ever know. **cue mysterious music** 8)

It does not sound off the wall at all.
The guy from cloverfield clues talked about this when the video first surfaced..
Something to the effect of how things exploded outward in the city, they did the same in the water with the oil rig. Maybe it is implied that it is something the monster does??

Here is a decent gif I made of the Monster at the end of the movie.

Is it any coincedence that in the teaser, they keep calling Rob their "main dude" and he ended up being the main character?

Also, has anyone not noticed how long that camera's battery life was? Seriously, mine dies after 10 minutes.

If one thing is certain it is that I think we have all learned way too much about Slusho as a company and a drink. It is starting to sound like Slusho is JJ's version of Slurm.

Then your battery sucks. Get a good Li-Ion and it'll last 2 hours easy.

And keep in mind that this is the actual recording. It hasn't been sliced up or anything. So it recorded 80 minutes of footage and no more. Quick bit of trivia for you folks. Most cameras that use mini tapes have a maximum recording time of 80 minutes...So the camera cut off at the end of the reel which in turn was the end of the movie.

The LOST cloverfield connection...

This from Cloverfield clues

http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/

There is a Lost easter egg in Cloverfield's opening sequence. Eagle eye viewers will notice a Dharma symbol, similar the pearl station logo from Lost.

Well, I don't know about anyone else in here, but I enjoyed Cloverfield, I thought it was fun and original, and just a good all around survivalist/monster film.

Some insight about the monster from Abrams that was included in the production notes with the press kit.
*NOTE* for those that have not seen the movie there are some spoilers in the notes.

The concept for the monster (affectionately known simply as “Clover” in-house) is simple, says Abrams. “He’s a baby. He’s brand-new. He’s confused, disoriented and irritable. And he’s been down there in the water for thousands and thousands of years.”

And where is he from? “We don’t say – deliberately,” notes Goddard. “Our movie doesn’t have the scientist in the white lab coat who shows up and explains things like that. We don’t have that scene.”

Not only is the creature disoriented – he’s downright angry. “There are a bunch of smaller things – humans – that are annoying him and shooting at him like a swarm of bees,” observes Reeves. “None of these things are going to kill the monster, but they hurt it and it doesn’t understand. It’s this new environment that it finds frightening.”

This pretty much puts a nail in the coffin of the alien theory.
This is the second time Abrams has said it came from under the water.
