Comic Shop Trip (possible spoilers ahead!)

Postby Supreme Convoy » Sat Feb 10, 2007 4:50 pm

:BOT: Time to start this thread again. Feel free to talk about any comics you're reading. Be warned, we might talk about major spoilers!

So I picked up The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born #1. Now it took awhile to find because originally I was waiting for the hardcover but suddenly I had an urge to read it... but it was sold out pretty much everywhere! After 30 miles, I finally found a copy and it was worth it!

I'm currently reading The Dark Tower books (in the middle of Book 2) and I'm loving it. It really is a mesh between The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly and The Lord of the Rings. It's a treat to see it in comic format. Jae Lee's visuals are gorgous.

Even if you're not familiar with The Dark Tower world, I still think you'll enjoy this book. :CON:

Hey, does anybody read The Boys? Did you hear that DC dropped it after the "hamster incident"? It's a real shame because that book was really good. Hopefully, Garth Ennis will be able to get it published elsewhere.

Dynamite Entertainment picked up The Boys eariler in the week. They publish a lot of licensed stuff like the Battlestar Galactica and Army of Darkness titles.

:BOT: How is this 24 mini-series? I tried the first one-shot but it didn't do anything for me.

Actually, it was announced that it's under Dynamite Entertainment now (the publisher of Army of Darkness and Red Sonja)! Even though the artist is a DC exclusive, he's still drawing it because DC reverted the rights back to the creative team meaning they're able to publish it as a creator-owned book.

I haven't read the book. But now I'm curious to see what this book is all about! :CON:

The 24 series is a really entertaining read, in a popcorn comics kinda way. It's really good background if you're into the show, as it deals with the Nightfall that became the motive for Day 1 and the base of operations in Day 3. Anymore I said would be spoilers.

:BOT: Obviously we've talked about Captain America's death in #25, but elsewhere in the Marvel Universe...

The recent New Avengers #28-29 deals with the team entering SHIELD's Helicarrier on a tip that Cap is still alive... but it's a trap set up by Iron Man! It doesn't end with an all out between the New & Mighty Avengers. But it does have Dr. Strange putting a spell on Iron Man into seeing a zombie Captain America. Creepy.

As a follow up, I was entertained by Fallen Son #1 - Wolverine. Wolverine heads back to the Helicarrier to interrogate Crossbones and discovers Cap's real body, confirming his death. The best part was Lenil Yu drawing Daredevil.

And digging through the back issues, I read Marvel's Ares. And I was blown away! It's about Ares, The God of War, trying to live a normal life with Alex, his son. When Alex is kidnapped by Japanese demons, all hell break loose (literally)! I can imagine this as a Schwarzenegger movie already! :CON:

:BOT: It's been awhile since I've updated this thing.

Right now, I'm really loving Grant Morrison and JH William's arc on Batman. It's a riff on Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None... but with the Club of Heroes (ie, Batmen from all over the world).

And I finished reading the first part of Spider-Man: One More Day with the current issue of Amazing Spidey. Quesada's art isn't as good as his Guardian Devil run but it's not too shabby. Good set up... I just hope they don't kill Aunt May or Mary Jane :( :CON:

I used to get alot of DC but to the fact I don't like the way they are taking there characters and other things I only get 3 a month

Green Lantern- Ive been reading GL off and on since 1993. The current Sinestro Corps War event is okay it could be better. My favorite GL stories: Parallax View and Rebirth

The Punisher MAX- This book is good every month and I feel I get moneys worth. Favorite Punisher Story arcs: The Slavers and Up is Down Black is White

The Boys- Simply put this the best book out right now. Its something new that I haven't seen before. I highly reccomend this book

:BOT: Anyone out there read Green Arrow/Black Canary: Wedding Special?

It really did catch me off guard. It was a fun superhero wedding... ie, supervillains somehow are clued in and there's a massive brawl. But the shocker is at the very end at the honeymoon, Ollie somehow becomes possessed and attacks Dinah. Dinah is forced to stab him in the neck!

7 years after Ollie's resurrection by Kevin Smith, he's back in the grave. And it really boggles my mind.

And I feel like a sucker because I never noticed that the solicited covers of the new Green Arrow/Black Canary series features Green Arrow II. Should've seen that coming... :CON:

I think Ollie is, to put it in comics terms, "mostly dead". Either that's a doppelganger imitating him (Everyman maybe?) or he will survive the wound (and why didn't Canary use her canary cry to stop him? Or a grappling hold, since she is like one of the top martial artist in the DC universe? *sigh*).

I just read JLA/Hitman #2. One of the best books I have read in a while (together with #1). You need to have followed the Hitman series in the 90s (but boy, if you missed that, do yourself a favor and look it up ASAP!). Anyway, Garth Ennis really shows his hate of superheroes in a funny way... and his love for the only one that he respects: Superman. Probably should have been called Superman/Hitman, because the rest of the JLA (maybe sans WW) are caricatures of their normal selves. But believe me, if you like a well written Superman, don't miss it.

:BOT: I was listening to a podcast with Judd Winick and he explained that since Ollie was on top of Dinah's diaphragm and strangling her, she couldn't use her canary cry. So she was forced to use the arrow as a last resort.

Makes sense.

Though I still don't like Ollie dead :( :CON:

Hmmm I don't know how to post spoilers without spoiling (like in a invisitext), but well... let's just say I knew it couldn't be that lame.

:BOT: Time for some more recommended reads.

My top recommendation recently is Freddy vs Jason vs Ash #1! It's based on a New Line script that was not produced and takes place after the events of Freddy vs Jason. So far, I'm loving it. It's just setting up the insane brawl that continue for the next 5 issues.

If you're a fan of any of the starring characters, you must pick this up! :CON:

:BOT: I decided to pick up Avengers: The Initiative after listening to Dan Slott's enthusiasm for his book on Fanboy Radio. And I love it! I put it up there with Runaways and Young Avengers.

For those who aren't aware of it... after Civil War, Tony Stark has set up a program called The 50 State Initiative where super-powered people must register and go through training to use their powers under their Avengers-approved instructor. Those deemed qualified can move up to their state's Initiative team. (So California, Iowa, etc have their own Avengers team).

The book focuses on a new class of recruits and their boot camp training... and being a superhero isn't what it's cracked up to be!

And it's chocked full of obscure Marvel references! :CON:
