For Those Starting High School

Postby Shadowman » Thu Aug 16, 2007 1:09 am

Motto: "May God have mercy on my enemies, because I sure as hell won't."
I've finished, and I know how bad it can be.

I know there might not be many soon-to-be freshmen on here, but if there are, here's some tip to make sure you survive:

1. First and foremost, these are NOT the best years of your life. High School isn't like Dazed and Confused, or Porky's, or any of those high school movies from the eighties. Also, it's not like High School Musical. (I cannot stress the last part enough)

2. As bad as this sounds, try making friends with at least one teacher. A Teacher Confident can be your best asset when another teacher decides to start **** with you. (And believe it, this has happened to me. One teacher went so far as to lie to my mother to cover his sorry ass)

3. Friends are a necessity. They're much better than a Teacher Confident with certain issues. If one is a girl you happen to like (And this is a huge point) pay special attention to her. Young might end poorly, but so can any relationship. You'll learn volumes about relationships, too.

4. Here's a good tip: If you can do sports, there's probably a Freshman team for any sport at the school. Do this. If you aren't any good at sports, but excel at computers, try doing tech support. A guy I went to school with makes buttloads of cash because he practiced computers while fixing up other people's. This way, you'll make friends. (Either your teammates, or grateful people with computers)

5. If your school has a free Driver's Training Program, take it ASAP. (Which'll probably be Sophomore year) Even if your parents won't buy you a car (Which means you'll have to work for it, one of the best lessons my parents ever taught me), you'll still be ready to get one when you have the cash. (A car isn't as nice when you don't have a license to drive)

6. Here's a tip: Take notes on everything your teacher says. Doesn't matter if he/she let's you use the book on tests, or if he/she doesn't allow notes on tests. Writing it down will etch it into your brain. I learned this after many, many 'F's.

7. Nerds, remember, there is an alliance between Nerds/Geeks, emos, and goths. And the classification will NOT be apparent. (Emos are NOT what the media says. I had an emo friend, she was very hyper and happy, oh, and a cutter)

8. Don't jump into conversations with a weird quote. Ever. It will only end in shame.

9. Most men play video games, I kid you not. But BE WARNED, they are generally not serious gamers like us. They play whatever game is popular at the time. Gears of War, Madden, Halo. If you end up in a conversation with one of these guys, be careful which games you mention. Pokemon is, of course, off-limits. Zelda can be awkward, especially to the uninitiated. (Most people don't know that you play as Link, not Zelda)

10. Watch what you say, and how you say it. Tone and words can be easily mocked.

11. Compared to Junior High/Middle School, you'll be up against roughly three times as many people. You can try knowing everyone, but there was 1500 people at my high school.

12. If you're in special ed (For whatever reason. It can range from incompetency, to underestimation, to emotional instability.) DON'T! TELL! ANYONE! EVER! If you have to, just say it's "Retarded math." Very likely, people will assume you mean you hate your math class.

13. English teachers are naturally cool. I can't explain why, but I've had a blast in every English class I had.

14. Don't take Health unless it's a required course. They are purely bullshit artists. (No one ever overdosed on Marijuana, and it doesn't turn you sterile unless you smoke the seeds)

That's about all I've got for now. Anyone want to add anything? By all means, go ahead.

EDIT: here's another:

15. Creative Writing and Philosophy can be really cool classes. I highly suggest them.

Here's a few more:

16. I don't care how popular the movie may be, I don't care how proud you are of this site, except in the company of close friends, don't mention being a member here. Again, you'll only be made fun of.

17. Also, Transformers aren't as big with your generation as you might like to think.

18. Do not let your ego get to you. Just being in High School doesn't make you King of the Universe. Luckily, most schools no longer allow the freshmen beat-down.

I don't want to sound like an asshole but your #1 is absolutely INCORRECT.

Looking back and seeing how rough life can actually be, I know why my parents told me "these are the best years of your life so cherish them".

You are honestly not out of school long enough to even make that statement. Give it a few years and you will see what I mean.

Your experiences are a help but you need to remember that there are thousands of schools and hundreds of thousands of situations that are different than yours.
Some of your tips can help but they are not applicable to all situations.

Here is a good tip..

BE YOURSELF. Don't let peer pressure move you towards something you do not want to do or a crowd that may not be favorable. Be true to yourself, don't change just because it is popular.

I was one of those jack of all trade guys that played sports, hung with the "heads", (people that listened to hard rock and heavy metal) AND still had friends that were considered "geeks/nerds" and was accepted by all of them..
I did collect toys back then and some people knew it but no one messed with me about it.

Think for yourself, don't let the magic TV box and social media do the thinking for you.

Just because you have a youtube review channel doesn't make you special.
I look forward to attending a Botcon soon only to settle matters with several idiots in person (yes this is a threat).

If those were the best years of my life, then life is gonna suck.

Now, I'm not saying it wasn't great for you, CB. You had something I lacked for the longest time. "Friends." It's not like I never tried to make them, but I was shy, and people were repulsed by me.

But it should never be assumed that High School is the best, because for me, it was the worst.

Actually, I think the best years of my life were between the ages of three and six. Kindergarten was all I had to worry about, that, and waking up in time to catch Power Rangers on Saturday morning.

And what Dinobot said is true. If you don't study, at least take notes on everything the teacher says. For the love of God/Allah/Odin/Zeus don't slack off.

High School was the best years of my life. Easily. I never had it so good. For me there were many similarities to Dazed and Confused. No bills, no children, very very little stress. It was nice. I was in drama, choir, math league, track, football, basketball, baseball, wrestling. i had excellent grades. Loads of girlfriends and was one of the few people in my school that was friends with every different crowd. I think everybody has a different high school experience. Just make the best of it.

1. Have to agree and disagree with you on this one. Yes, HIgh school isn't at all like those movies, but high school was some pretty good years, none-the-less. Getting a license, hanging out with friends, sports, etc. Compared to University or "Real Life" afterwards, this stuff is cake, and needs to be enjoyed (As senile as you like to think parents are for saying that, it's absolutely true...but never believed until after the fact).

2. Be friends with as many teachers as you can. Believe it not, they're not bad guys. Most of them are more than willing to lend an ear with any problem you may have.
And then, you do have some bad apples. I too had some teachers who were pretty self-serving. I had one teacher who wouldn't help me with algebra because he thought I was hopeless - turns out I had a form of dyslexia that affected how I perceive numbers. I also had problems with a very fat gym teacher who I ended up telling off (I have athsma, so was naturally one of the slowest kids in class. After one too many slow jokes, I told her to put down the donut and run a few laps herself because she needed it more than I did. I initially got detention, but the principal dismissed it. Ah well.)

3. I didn't get a girlfriend until I was a senior...too shy around girls.

4. Join any groups you have interests in. Clubs are a great way to make friends, and they only look good on University applications.

5. Can't disagree with you there, if you're school still does this though, it's usually a required class anyway.

6. Yep.

7. Have to add, that these classifications no longer amount to anything once you're out of high school. Those cool cliques who may (or may not) end up tormenting you because of their status suddenly lose all their power once that diploma hits your hands. There may be frats in college and university, but there are NO cliques...at least none with power...you'll see.

8. Ooooookayyyyy. Moving on.

9. Moving on.

10. True.

11. Get used to it, it only gets worse in College.

12. I have to take offense to the term "incompetency". Most people who are in special ed classes aren't incompetent in the least. Most just learn in different ways. I used special ed classes in the case of my math, I wasn't stupid, I just had to learn a different way and with a more hands-on approach. BTW: while there are a great number in special ed because of social problems, it usually doesn't matter in this class.
I also don't know about the whole "don't tell anyone" thing either. I never found this to be an issue, with the exception of a one particular ass who liked to find something to pick on me with. Though most don't really care.
Have some confidence in yourself.

13. So are must art teachers I know. I also had a pretty cool history teacher (though he loved to be sidetracked by the JFK conspiracy).

14. Usually health is a prequired class, at least it was for me. I don't know about the whole bull-shit artist thing either, most of the course work here is state regulated. Otherwise, it's a good first step if your interested in healthfield industry.

15. Ditto.

16. Again, this all has to do with the cliquish thing, and how vicious high school can tend to be socially. May be true for high school, you'd be surprised how much that changes in college. I didn't hide my obsession in college and often had figures up in my dorm...everyone else found this pretty cool.

17. Probably not.

18. Big egos deflate like balloons once that diploma hits the hand. Welcome to the real world.

If those were the best years of my life, then life is gonna suck.

You have no idea.
In retrospect, wait until after college, you'll think much differently. EVERONE thinks high school is the worst during and immediately after. You're no exception. :)

I finished high school in 2002 and already I'm running a full household. When did that happen??? Looking back, the first two years pretty much sucked, but 11th and 12th grade were pretty cool. Getting my license is still one of the greatest moments of my life. I walked out of the building, license in hand, and there was my clunker of a pickup waiting for me! Driving it back to school was a euphoric experience. Also, there's that virginity thing....another big moment, huh. Anyway.....

I hope these weren't the best years of my life. I have so many plans for the future, and I can only hope they will be better than when I was a bumbling idiotic teenager. I hope having money and a decent car will be better. I hope opening the doors of my own business will be better than taking a math test every week and doing homework every afternoon. I think the best years are what you make them. Personally, I hated teenagers when I was a teenager and would never wish high school upon myself ever again.

Ding ding ding..

You live under your parents roof, you get fed, your clothes get washed.. Other than keeping your grades and contemplating on a college you have no real worries in life.

Now College was an absolute BLAST for me.. I love learning and the freedom was nice too.

Loki120 also hit on some great points as well (#1 is a good example)..

High school was not the best years of my life, but I did have a good time.

I lived nearby and I walked home through the forest. This was the source of all my creative ideas back then, and the book I'm writing still owes so much to those woods.

Quake Deathmatches at lunch = win

I had no girlfriends or sex during those years. I'm still pretty inexperienced, but not nearly as much now as I was (thank heaven) but it was my choice. I was shy. I didn't ask anyone out, and now I know I could have had some good girls, as after the fact knowledge came down to me over the years.

But most importantly, I was popular in the last two years. Everyone thought I was the greatest. And why was that?

Are you ready for it? Are you sitting down?

Because one of my parents was a teacher. That's right. That actually made me popular. How? Because he was one of the cooler teachers on campus and they all loved him.

College was better, but there are some things about high school that I'll never get back.
Buy my RiD toys! They're awesome, I promise!!!!

Holy Shinola. If we had that kind of power, I'd've had a much better time.

We weren't allowed to install programs on the school computers, you see. Hell, I wasn't even allowed on Seibertron, Newgrounds, or several other harmless sites.

Here's something funny about our High School Computers: they blocked stuff at random. No joke. 8-Bit Theater, a comic about Final Fantasy with relatively little swearing (Nudity wasn't an option, Brian uses FF 1 sprites) was blocked. Penny Arcade, a comic filled with swearing, dirty jokes, and, occasionally, nudity, was not.

But my dad was going to become a Sub-Teacher at my school, when he was still looking for a job. Cool beans, though: He admitted that "Sub Days are Days Off," (Meaning subs usually don't require working) a policy, he says, dates back to when HE went to my school.

Uhh, this is the worst advice anybody could give...

Life is life, you have to walk the battlefield and come out the other side. Very few do so unscathed.

Yes you will get into fights.

Yes, you will cry and have your heart broken.

Yes you will hate your teachers.

Yes, you will hate your parents.

Yes, you will survive and move on.

This is life. HS is just a part of it.

The only thing that I do agree with is, it is much better not having to pay rent and having someone else buy your food.

In the real world, you have to work for that.

Back in the day...circa 1984 I was a senior

I NEVER let the kids in my class or underclassmen know that I was starting to collect Transformers

That meant being ridiculed by almost everybody

When I first started High School I went to a school called Brien Mcmahon High School in Norwalk Ct.I was lucky enough to go to McMahons Annex school for the 9th grade. It was great that first year NO UPPERCLASSMEN! W00T

That is how is was done before they stopped it the very next year (Budget cuts)So we all went to the Main Campus to start the 10 grade along with the new set of 9th graders. So both classes were new to the Main Campus

So I started my Sophmore year very new and afraid

It will pass

Just remember how you started Middle School its not that different

Oh yeah when you hit the 10th grade give the freshmen some slack they are scared like you were too

Actually I wasn't meaning it like that, I am not what you would call "PC", I take silly old praises like that and "make them my own" by changing them and using uncommon ones that are not as well known.
Even if I was not an admin I would have said it this way "It's whatever I decide it to be".

There you go! :D
Not a sheeple.
Think for yourself, don't let the magic TV box and social media do the thinking for you.
Question EVERYTHING!!
Just because you have a youtube review channel doesn't make you special.
I look forward to attending a Botcon soon only to settle matters with several idiots in person (yes this is a threat).

Highschool is where I realized, that I was better than everyone in my school.

Which may sound really egotistical, but then you would have to know Jackson for you to understand what I mean.

The kids in Jackson think they're in a suburb of Detroit. For those of you who don't know Michigan, Detroit is about 80 miles away from Jackson. So, even though we're not close to Detroit, every gangsta, wannabe Eminem ect, thought he was from Detroit, and therefore "hard."

The high-school itself, Jackson High, wasn't bad, some teachers were cool, some weren't, as with any high-school. The biggest thing was, the school taught me nothing. It really was just a minimum security baby-sitting service.

The students, aside from thinking they were from Detroit, fell easily into all the cliques seen in The Breakfast Club, and I swear to Jebus, some of them probably thought they were the cast from.

As for me, I didn't fall into any clique, I was just there.

4 years of dealing with deedeedee's, sure I had friends, the same friends I grew up with, thank god, who also saw the school for what it was, and how it slowly degraded from year to year.

I learned one valuable lesson about highschool in my 4 years of going. To quote a song. "In the end, it doesn't even matter."

Edit: My advice for anyone in high-school, starting high-school, ect. If you can, start taking college courses ASAP. College will be where you actually begin learning.
