Goodbye Carbomya

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

Goodbye Carbomya

Postby Bonger » Tue Oct 23, 2007 1:37 am

Losing Carbomya is unfortunate.

Maybe it is time to not accept memberships from free email accounts like some other sites do.

Sucks that some idiots ruin it for everyone.

You should be able to see my last message before I locked the forum. If you can't see the threads in that forum or my last post, please let me know and I will look into the problem further. Carbombya is no more.

It is unfortunate and it does suck that some idiots ruin it for everyone. It's closed until I can think of a better concept than just having a free-for-all buy/sell/trade forum. It's likely that it will never return because it's about as low as it possibly gets priority-wise to me at this moment.

How about no more people registering with free email accounts like some other sites do? Might cut down on some of the riff raff.

Well it was fun while it lasted. I know my prices were too good to be true, but thats b/c I like hooking up other TF fans. :D Accounts are hackable as well, so you will never eliminate all the problems.... just takes some SQL injection.

Or maybe you could mod the posting requirements like you can do on some forums(not sure if you can on this type as I haven't used it but you could on the forums I've owned), set it so only a select few can make a thread in Carbomya. Then those that want to sell have to appeal to someone for this right to post their threads. If you think they're alright to sell then they get given the status that allows them to start a thread in there, no one else has the button saying "new topic" available. If they post something different to what they originally asked to post then you take it down. It would then become for serious sellers, rather than everyone having a huge free-for-all.
Any help?

Here's Seibs post about it:
http://seibertron.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21562&sid=

Too many scammers ruined it. There were a couple of bad eggs. I remember a particular member who traded with members and never held up his end of the bargain- then Homeland Security got involved... its been a total mess b/c of stuff like that. I don't blame Seibs for ending it- it just sucks that it had to happen b/c some people view TF fans as prey.

It takes resources to do that properly, which in turn means fees and headaches for Seibertron.com. You might as well leave it up to ebay for that kind of a system.

I can understand his frustration.
I can understand his closing of the thread.
I can understand his being tired of emails, PMs, etc.

I cannot understand why he'd attack the "gullible" in the same line as he attacks those who would exploit such a weakness in others.

It's like punishing all the kids, because the middle kid broke the neighbor's window while playing backyard baseball.

I think the "gullible" thing needs to be dropped, and is quite rude. But I'll give Seibs credit for being balls to the wall in your face about it.

thanks for that XGamer...ouch, this sucks...i'm glad that our local forums here hold much more integrity, almost all buy, sell/ trade transactions (so far) have gone through...hope everything's going to be all right for Seibs with regards to this concept in the future. guess this was bound to happen, sooner or later.

I think he used gullible as in stupid. Deals that look too good to be true ARE too good to be true type of thing. I think if people used a little more sense, it might have prevented some of the incidents. Moot point now though unfortunately.

If he meant stupid, then that's even worse.

Problem is, some of the people here are teenagers, quite young in fact. Is it right to consider them gullible or stupid?

Ah well. This is a moot point, he'll think what he wants to. Can't change that.

This is truly unfortunate. Nobody hears about the positive stuff that goes on in there.

I developed a comrade in there. ZedsDead. We no longer need the forum, because a great trust has been developed between us and our many trades. It's just unfortunate that others will not get the opportunity to build this kind of trust with other members.

It can still happen, but carbombya was a great vehicle to use to get there.

This is complete and utter bullshit! There has to be a way to fix it! You can't just leave us to effin ebay! To pay ridiculous prices! Most of the TF in carbomya can't even be found on ebay! This is horrible!

Why not make a requirement to b/t/s on carbomya? like a certain number of posts. That should keep some people out.

As I posted in the other post regarding this topic:

Heres an idea. Restrict posting access in the trade forum to those with atleast 100 posts and 3 months of membership.

Those are arbitrary numbers, but I'm sure you get the idea.

I think a restriction along those lines would greatly reduce the number of scam threads and dishonest traders.

It is a matter of semantics. Could some issues have been avoided by peeps being more cautious when dealing with members with like 2 posts, ofcourse. I believe that was pretty much his point.

Regardless, I think the fact that we lost a valuable resource is a much more important issue that how the reasoning for it was worded. Not trying to single you out or anything. Just wanted to get the topic back on track. Maybe we can drum up some good ideas to increase security and get the forum re-opened in the future.

It's unfortunate that some people ruin it for everyone. I personally never had any bad transactions, but there was one in the works that never came to fruition but theres no sour apples over it. I'm glad I found Carbombya, it was one of the huge reasons I became a member here. But my business has been done for a long time as I found the rest of my collection @ other places. So for those of you who were honest and had integrity I want to thank you. It's people like you who make good ideas worth keeping around, and people like Ryan who allow others to accomplish their goals through things like Carbombya.

i agree with Bonger. it's not foolproof, but with at least 3 mos. of membership & a post requirement, i doubt opportunists and con artists would stay that long just to screw someone over a $20 toy.

with all due respect to Seibs, but i still think Carbombya can still happen. just a little more enforcing with the rules and more mods specifically for this forum.

Thanks. Carbomya can definately keep going. I really believe that a trade forum is as important to a TF community as a discussion board for toys. Trading is half the fun of collecting. Giving and getting great deals from fellow collectors is as well.

However, I agree with Ryan. Carbomya has been out of control for a long time and have chatted about this with mods before. However, I think with the right regulation and posting regulations, it can definately be a part of this site in the future and be better than ever before!

I like the (X amount of months) membership requirement most of all.

Any decent post whore can get up to 100 rather quickly.

2 or 3 months of commitment, that's pretty solid.

Mate that with a post amount requirement, and those scalpers who know jack and **** about TF's would be revealed to those paying attention to their posts.

thanks for telling Seibs about this. i agree with you that TF Trading is an essential part of a TF online community; heck, here in our country, one of the most active (and at times, the most active part) of the local TF forums are the trading threads.

trading builds up a certain bond with collectors you know; though a certain toy is loose, knowing that it came from the hands of a TF collector, you have the assurance that at least this toy has been well-taken care of. it's also a fun way to make new friends.

i don't know why, but even with simple rules, we Pinoy collectors thrive and build lots of camaraderie over this practice. based on my experience, i still have not had a scam/bad/lousy trade over here. neither have the other members. ok, maybe there were some little spat over extensive haggling and such, but never have most of us experienced being scammed.

maybe Seibs could bring it back, but a set of moderators would be the ones enforcing the rules on the new Carbombya; take all the suggestions here, tweak it a little, probably add some more to make it work like it should. in such a short time, many of us have come up with simple but good ideas to prevent such shortcomings in the future.
