I only found out about this this morning when I read a newspaper headline on the way to work. Very sad when a young person goes... or anyone at all. Never would have expected this. He was never a reckless person, AFAIK.

An old friend of mine who was an RCMP officer in the northwest was killed in October on duty. He was 30 and had a daughter who was less than a year old. He was slathered all over the news. News shoes, newspapers, Internet sites, a Facebook group, even Don Cherry had a 30-second bit on him during his Coach's Corner. Sometimes they *do* get coverage. And then, after a few days, it seemed like they were treating it like a sideshow, like the next big item. He was almost a flavour-of-the-month for the media. They weren't allowed into the funeral, so they set up shop across the street. It's like the media took advantage of his death. And then I thought sometimes people are better left mourned by those who knew him. (Although I have to say Don Cherry treated it very tastefully.)

I personally was a fan of Ledger's. I've seen several of his movies and all of his performances were great. Personally, his role in Brokeback Mountain showed how talented he really was (if you can get past the fact that it's a gay western, you'd see how splendid the movie truly is.)

TDK won't be the same without Ledger promoting it, but he'll live on in that movie and every other. I'm sad that he is gone, but grateful for his contribution to an industry I enjoy.

Well, that's the problem with Blockbuster. They are a terrible video store. Remember when AFI put out the list of their "top 100 movies of the last 100 years" list a few years back? Blockbuster carried 14 of them. Fourteen out of the American Film Institute's top 100.

From what I heard, he also had a really bad case of Pneumonia so that combined with a normal dose of sleeping pills could have caused an unforseen reaction. I'm holding my opinions until the tox report is released.

That didn’t take long. The same day that actor Heath Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment, the apparent victim of a drug overdose, Fred Phelps’s Westboro Baptist Church announced that it would picket the funeral of the Brokeback Mountain star.

"God hates fag-enablers," the WBC proclaimed in a news release issued yesterday, concluding with: "Heath Ledger is now in Hell and has begun serving his eternal sentence - beside which, nothing else about Heath Ledger is relevant or consequential."

Enter the extremist Christian crew. No offense to most Christians, but these nuts need to be removed from the gene pool as quickly as possible. What kind of person spouts off this crap the day some one passes away? How about some respect and decencey? That's foreign concepts to these people. The ignorance that this release spews just blows my mind. I guess they need a Bbile refresher course on the teachings of Jesus. You know the oart where Jesus talks about compassion and forgiveness.The bible-thumping crowd tends to rail about how being gay is a sin but they must have a different Bible than I do because I have a pretty good understanding of it and I don't recall ever seeing it in there. I get the feeling that these folks are going to be in for a really warm surprise when they pass on.

You know what? I can't even come up with anything good to even remotely come close to what level of inhuman they are.

I wonder if Phelps will have the moral conviction to repeat that tripe to Ledger's family face to face. Somehow I doubt it. Here's a variation of the golden rule Mr Phelps: If you can't say it to someone's face then don't say it to the press.

But you're right - they really missed the big picture. "Hate the sin, love the sinner" as the saying goes...

Regardless of who they are it's really sad when anyone dies, especially when they're really young. I understand that he had just had a daughter born?

I'll be honest, I'm not sure I can even watch the film now. It's just kinda creepy watching someone's last performance, especially when it's one such as this, so close to their death.

And we still don't know that the movie was what pushed him over the edge, or that he even tried to kill himself. It's still inconclusive.

...though it is creepy that Jack Nicholson tried to warn him about the role.

I'd heard/read rumors that Nicholson was disaapointed he wasn't asked to reprise the role, but never heard about him warning Ledger. That is creepy.
