I'm Back

Welcome to the General Discussion area where just about anything goes! This area is designed to discuss all matters and does not necessarily have to be Transformers related. Please keep topics relevant.

Hey this seems like a lot of hassle for an old timer coming back.

Worst case scenario, the guy created an acct and forgot about it. Then delete it.

Best case scenario, it was some weird board mix up. Then delete it.

We don't want to disillusion this guy, and make him go to another board(gasps at the horror of the thought) :-s

So either way, lets delete the offensive ID and let the dude go on from here.

I don't know who started the warning: but it's a play on the warning for those allergic to peanuts. If you eat a peanut and are allergic, you may die. If you come to Seibertron and are allergic to our bad taste in jokes and crude humor, you may be banned! I think the latter is much, much worse! :)

I somehow doubt he is a real "old timer", seeing how our own Homer Jay has changed his name to plain "Homer" several times in the past.
Now about the "offensive Id".. I am trying my best to keep my temper down so I do not say something wrong so bear with me..
.........................
There is no “offensive ID”, if you go back and re-read the thread you would find out that there is another username that shares the same IP address as our friend here. What I am trying to find out is why. Is it an alt ID? Is it a mix up?
The IP address is like a “fingerprint” and is to a persons computer and service provider.

The same first couple of numbers for 2 people in the same region = Yes

The same complete IP for 2 people in the same region = No

The same IP address with 2 usernames attached = 2 accounts from the same terminal.

SAYING THAT, there is no offensive ID, there are 2 accounts from the same IP, and both post so I cannot just delete one until I make sure that everything is on the "up and up".

Out of curiosity, would the IP's be the same if they were from the same network? (i.e. campus network or perhaps a cyber cafe)

Only part would be the same. Each terminal has it's own individual number.

An example would be this

73.256.559.52

The first 2 numbers are the global location.
The rest are network and terminal identifiers.

Well, if you feel it's the same person, and that person says it's not them, can't you then delete it?

I mean if you sent an PM to that account and no one responds, you'll delete it, right?

I don't actually know how all of that stuff worx, but that sounds good to me.

Your IP is different for the above post..
At one of your locations, someone has another account registered and posting from it..

Is anyone else using one of the computers that you post from?

So one of the locations he posts from is the library..
BUT is it the post with multiple users..

*EDIT*

Ok, in the above post he said he is posting from the library.. That one has only one registered user.. Him..
So the other one is the one with the 2 accounts registered..
Where else do you post from?

Why not just trace the Internet Provider address by every member in this forum? Wouldn't that work?

So, what you're saying is trace the IP of EVERY member of the forum? Which is a good 32,020 people....

Yeah, somehow I'm gonna guess that isn't a good idea.

I do look at IP's of users. Granted not every user but I do look at them.
Internet protocol numerical address are assigned to each computer on the network so that its location and activities can be distinguished from other computers.

If two user ID's come from the exact same IP then that means that they are being originated from the same computer.
2 computers side by side hooked up to the same internet connection will still have 2 different IP addresses, now the first 2 numbers should be the same but the rest will vary.

Not necessarily. His ISP might use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. If his ISP's network was down, he may have been designated a new IP when it came back online, which would mean his original IP was now free and could've been designated to another PC on the network.

Maybe.. But what are the chances of two separate users having the exact same IP address if not from the same computer?

They simply have the same Internet Service Provider. I don't think you're following me.

Say we have User1 who registers, here. Their IP address is logged, accordingly. If this user's ISP uses DHCP, and the network goes down, they are re-assigned a new IP when service comes back online, thus freeing up their original IP. Or maybe they cancelled their service. Again, their IP is now free to use with another customer.

Now we have User2 who comes along and begins using the same ISP. This user is designated a new IP address. Since User1's old IP address is free, the ISP could now assign it to User2.

Understand?
