Yeah I never understand that! Why would u force your self to not like something that u might like just because somebody would think u would be "uncool" and dumb for going to see something that might childish in their eyes! I mean br yourself!

Because the average teenager is a self-conscious wreck. They blindly follow the "clique" system and popular culture and so on.

What about the guys in their 20s-40s? Think they feel embaressed about still buying toys? Think they'll be embaressed watching the Transformers movie?

Teenagers seems to hate everything they liked during their childhood. And if they did, they'd be labelled "uncool" or "nerdy" or other such terms. They'd be sacrificing their status at school if they saw this movie. And not many teens would be willing to do so.

"Dude, Transformers is like totally for kids."

"Like, really. They're like saying it's gonna be all cool but it's based on like a kiddie show or something."

"Yeah, don't you remember watching that? It was so stupid"

"Dude, you wanna watch a movie about toys? Haha, whatever. Go and be like a nerd or something."

"Shia Labeouf? Isn't he that guy from that 'Even Steven's' show? Haha what an idiot."

"Meghan Fox? Who the hell is that? Oh yeah, she's hot, but Transformers is so lame. It's not worth it."

"Huh? I haven't seen any advertisements on TV for it. It must be stupid if they're afraid to shoe clips from it."

"Dude, why would we watch a movie a bunch of thirty year olds with no life are going to watch?"

Hasbro is (in theory) screwed.

With all due respect, we are tracking HUGE with teenagers.

did you ever think for a second there'd be the demographic of kids and an older generation of 80's kids who didn't play w/ toys and aren't complete lardasses who sit and watch TV all day?

that there's a group of people who probably have no feelings about Transformers and just happened to see the movie commercial and thought, "Hey that looks good!"

your preconceived idea that everyone knows Transformers from how we remembered it in the 80's is very biased. besides what else is there to see that weekend? kids and movie fans of all ages aren't going to have anything to look forward to at the box office that week other than Transformers so it's highly improbable a mass of people will turn it down because they don't want to look silly. remember the WORST movies make millions...

also remember the whole world isn't a couch potato or a 30 something nerd and the teens today have attention spans that are drawn to a movie like this no matter what it's called.

I AM movie supporter. I have been since the script got leaked, and I thought it was a phenomenal piece of work. I'm not a movie hater, but it's better to single out all the things that could go wrong and change them for the better.

I'm really trying to make a point here but none of you seem to hear me out. Teenagers hate childish things. They seek to be independent but are sucked into a vicious rating system, and they wish to not be at the bottom.

Teenagers are on something called "an emotional rollercoaster." They'll believe anything someone tells them, and if someone, say one of those ignorant Abercrombie nightmares, says that Transformers was a kiddie cartoon, then the rest of said teenagers will believe him or her.

The average teen would not be willing to sacrifice their social status to watch a movie. /rant

Actually, they seem to be the ones most hyped about the movie.

And hopefully, if cool celebs like Tyrese, Josh, and maybe Shia get the word out, maybe those idiotic emotional wrecks will listen.

As an High School teacher I can validate what Smooth says. My kids have no clue I am a Transfan and they constantly talk about how cool this movie is going to be and how cool Beast Wars was.

I wasn't talking about the people that watched G1 at the age of five. I was talking about the ones that watched RID or Armada at the age of seven. G1 fans have nothing to do with it, believe it or not, children of the eighties will probably love it.

Ok, your points that there are teens out there who don't know anything about TF might be valid, except:
1) MTV spent three and half hours pimping TF for it's movie awards show. And you know MTV only shows a program one time.
2) Teens define pop culture, and as such, are online. Wasn't there some big upgrade that happened to Myspace a couple months ago? Oh yeah, cause of the TF movie profile.
3) For the teens that don't watch MTV (or any TV), some of their favorite bands are on the soundtrack. Why are The Used on the soundtrack and not Lion? Cause hair metal is teh suxxors.

But this is all irrelevant info...supposition, really. So here are some numbers, based on the number of times a particular term was used on Google, Yahoo, or MSN searches within the last 30 days:

(specific movie titles)
Die Hard 4 - 6257
fantastic four movie - 23436
Pirates of the Caribbean 3 - 23856
Transformers movie - 42577*
Spiderman 3 - 175,467
*some of these results have to be contaminated with searches for the animated film

(generic IP terms)
Die Hard - 52,181
Thundercats - 147,520 (for the sake of objectivity)
Pirates of the Caribbean - 234, 393
Fantastic Four - 632,927 (biggest surprise)
Transformers - 639,428*
Spiderman - 1,059, 506
*some of these results also have to be contaminated with searches for actual telephone pole transformers. Guessing about 20,000.

So, I'm going to guess that the initial market penetration for TF is about the same or a little better than Pirates 3, but not quite as big as Spider-man. Both of those movies suffered from poor word of mouth and a tired storyline (I liked Pirates, but who's counting?). F4 had lots of buzzkill going into the opening weekend. Galactus is a cloud? Yuck.

All the initial buzz for TF is positive. The FX are light years ahead of all the other standard action fare. Nobody has ever seen anything like this before. Remember the Matrix fared extremely well on word-of-mouth advertising long after the initial release date.

Gut feeling, if the buzz stays this positive, is a 125-150 million take on the opening weekend domestic, 100+ overseas, and trundling along with a 40% drop off for each of the next two weeks. By the end of July, we should be looking at a gross around 400 - 475 million.

Even if teens do feel a bit of "peer pressure" not to see this movie, I don't see how that will stop them from seing it.

Yeah, when I was a teenager I was self-conscious about my interest in Transformers, but that didn't stop me from pursuing it. I just didn't take my hobby to school with me.

So if teens feel any pressure like, "Oh, this is just for nerds," the most it will make them do is sneak into the theater when their friends aren't around.

Pirates is based off a theme park ride.

And just so you know. Transformers have had a toon for every line other then Machine Wars and a comic. And most of the movies I mentioned have cartoon shows and comics. There is no difference.

I actually just registered, had to respond to this thread.

Dude, I am a Freshman going on Sophmore in College. So I'm a kid/teen of the 90s.

When the trailer first hit and went online I played it before my film class and litterally every guy in the class lined up behind my laptop and all were litterally awed and amazed by what they saw. Everyone's reaction was- "fck, that is going to be AWESOME!!!!"

I don't know about high school. But, I can tell you right now that College age and up will be going to go see this film.

This isn't Power Rangers or something.... this is giant mother fcking robots fighting each other man! This is revolutionary and amazing. For children of the 80s AND 90s.

I just felt really angry at how you are generalizing all of us as following the leader- when that is anything but the case.

JW, how old are you?

Because pages back we got replies from guys in high school and it seems to have gotten the same amazing response I witnessed in college when the trailer first premiered.

NOTE: I have also played the trailers for SM3 and FF2, etc. Those got no attention at all. The only trailer and time that happened was for the TF trailer.

I also find it disappointing that whenever the film is plugged on a television show, it's referred to as "based on a toy." Why can't they address it's based on a successfull TV show that's lasted since the mid-80's? I hope Mr. Orci can answer this one.

And, I played all the trailers in my English class. The reaction was a few chuckles (not in the good way, it was laughing at the film) and the rolling of some eyes.
