No, there was some Bay quote awhile ago where he rattled off the heights of a few TFs. Megs was somewhere between 32 and 35 feet high and Prime was 28 feet.

QFT
really he should be a tank or rail gun artillery...I don't see many awesome sequences as a stealth bomber....
"hey some bombs!"
"where'd they come from?"
"...its megatron!"
any air battle sequences would also not be too exciting.....
sorry maybe I am just grumpy right now.

If Bay do that, he's freakin stupid! Unless they want to make us BELEIVE he's dead. Seriously, many time we thought Meg' was dead and yet he just kept comin' back!

The only way to end the Decepticon threat in the first movie is the destruction, or belief of destruction of Megatron.
Megatron is bigger and stronger than Prime, so a one on one battle (which will happen) probably see's Meg's on top. I don't know why, but TF writers just love it when Prime gets his ass kicked.
So either Megatron dies, or the Allspark gets shot back into deep space AGAIN.

Just speculating. But I think the cometary mode is only intended for the short journey within the solar system and the entry into the atmosphere.
In the prequel novel the autobots and decepticons still use vessels for interstellar travel because the deadly conditions inside of a wormhole.
Maybe megatron's alt mode is an interstellar jet so that he can travel solo through the universe without relying on the nemesis, or some other transport.

While I like your hypothesis on the reasoning (I did read Ghosts of Yesterday) it doesn't explain why Prime does not have the same capabilities. Afterall, Megs and Prime are brothers in this storyline, ruling as equals, part of the Dynasty of the Primes, before Megs went berserk for the Allspark.
One of those parts that get left out and u just have to assume I guess.

I hadn't thought of that. Even though megs and prime are brothers and they ruled as equals, I'm expecting megatron to be more powerful. He was after all the LORD HIGH PROTECTOR.

Ok so basically its lord of the rings with a good yet weaker Sauron vs an evil sauron whose obsessed with the ring, err... allspark..?
