Power Rangers switches to animated series-Live action series cancelled

Postby NinjaJack » Tue Nov 20, 2007 11:40 am

Hey I'm sorta knew here, but I've read here from time to time and I'm a big TF fan. But right now theres another old school favorite wit legs that I think some of you will be interested in hearing about

From Rangerboard

Although we've been in denial for a while, I just heard from my source. As it stands, Jungle Fury is the last planned season of Power Rangers. Then they will be switching to animated. We've heard this before and no one wants to believe it, but it's true. My source says if you care about the future of Power Rangers, SEND LETTERS. Tell them how you feel. After constant mail, we finally got Overdrive the full season released on DVD. It wouldn't have happened without us. So now is the time to act.

The address:
The Walt Disney Company
500 South Buena Vista St.
Burbank, CA 91521

I was looking through the pictures I've collected from all the Power Morphicon threads on the net, and this is by far one of my favorites.
Image
This picture represents what the Power Ranger fandom is, People of all nationalities and creeds standing together in a shared love for PR. Power Rangers is the type of show that many of us want our kids to enjoy. Forgeting our bias on which company has produced the better seasons between Saban and Disney. right now we might actually LOSE the whole show.

I want this show to be around for my kids to enjoy, but at this rate I just don't know.

The only thing to do is to take the WGA's lead and show some solidarity and write the folks and Disney to Keep Power On

Wow.

That's kind of a big let down for that series's fans.

PR was awesome

But hey I'll get over it

I was never a big Power Rangers fan either, but it had about a 15 year run. That's pretty solid in my book and says a lot about the fanbase.

I'm very optimistic about this. I've never been a fan of the corny battles between the zords and monsters.

However, with the animation, I have hopes that we will get some really cool looking battles.

The downside is that there is a 99% chance the rangers will be more annoying than the Transformers Armada Children. :-(

The only way this would work for me is if they did a best of Power Rangers.

With the different Rangers from over the years.

Obviously Tommy Oliver in any color.

Eric Myers as the Quantum Ranger

Jason Lee Scott as the Red Ranger

Hunter and Blake Bradley as the crimson and navy rangers

Wait, if I keep going I'm going to have like 20 rangers

I liked the toys a lot, mostly the zords.

Shame though, it was on forever it seems.

Or better yet they could cancel it altogether, destroy the evidence and then whipe the minds of every one so no one knew that it existed in the first place.

They should've put it to bed when Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers was over. But as has been said, 15 years is an impressive length of time and I hope the animated version does well.

This sucks. This sucks hard. I haven't really bee into Operation Overdrive all that much, and the only episode I really cared about was the two-parter with Johnny Yong Bosch.

I wonder how this affects Super Sentai, and the people who do fansubs for it. :-?

My assumption is that Super Sentai is done in Japan, so that's why they are going with animation to continue the brand name.

I mean, it wouldn't make sense to pay for animation if they are continuing to do Sentai over there as it would not be cost efficient to pay for both.

What's even weirder, it hasn't:

Juken Sentai Gekiranger is the basis for Jungle Fury, the last series in America before going to Animation.

But there's one planned for next year: Enjin Sentai Gōonger, which runs NEXT year, after Jungle Fury.

Weird.

Yeah, that is weird. Before, they saved quite a bit of money by just importing all the fight scenes from the Japanese shows and adding the American Storyline, essentially taking one show and turning it into 2.

Now they are going to have 2 shows.

I'm curious to know if the cast of Power Rangers ever year cost just as much as having animators and voice actors on a cartoon... :-?

Well this will be interesting, I grew up on MMPR, but then found out about Super Sentai and have been watching that for years (Thanks TV-Nihon).

I don't think Super Sentai will end just yet, its really big in Japan and I doubt they will kill it if its doing well.

But you never know, maybe it will go animated in Japan in the future, I'm not sure whats bigger there, live action (Super Sentai, Kamen Rider) or Animé.

Disney wanted more control over Toei's product. Toei doesn't want Disney messing with their stuff. Disney takes a new route. I think it's stupid

It's going to take twice as long, and cost twice as much. Knowing Disney, rather than getting the Pros (Yuri Lowenthal, Steve Blum, Wendee Lee, etc.) they're probably going to get some half-assed pop-singers or "Rockers" that they own the souls of, and not only do we get poopy acting, but, knowing Disney, they're going to lace it with "Humor" found in a lot of American cartoons. (Most writers on action cartoons in America have a bad habit of ending up trying to be funny when they SHOULD be scripting an action sequence)

Powersurge wrote:But you never know, maybe it will go animated in Japan in the future, I'm not sure whats bigger there, live action (Super Sentai, Kamen Rider) or Animé.

I read somewhere that Anime is a lot more popular in Japan, because it's more versatile: In live action, all you really get is Japanese people, because there's not a wide variety of Americans who live in Japan. In anime, you can have absolutely any kind of being, human or otherwise, and giant robots, girls in their underwear with no loss of dignity, and as many kinds of demons, aliens, and monsters as you can draw.

Well it would be interesting to see a Animé Super Sentai, would be easier to do than a live action I spose, well we will just have to wait and see if they do go to Animé for Super Sentai in a few years time.

Well, it would help if they actually improved the series.

I mean, most of the time, the villain/monster gets defeated by the rangers, becomes gigantic, the rangers summon the Megazord, Megazord destroys villain.....

I don't know what the ratings for the recent Power Rangers shows have been, but I can't see them being all that high for three major reasons:

1) Most local stations don't carry the series anymore (my local ABC station never has it scheduled).
2) The only station that does carry the series regularly is Toon Disney, which is unavailable without a subscription to digital cable.
3) The only other means of watching the episodes are through downloads on YouTube or other video site, and lately several media coporations (Viacom mostly) have been cracking down on those and getting them removed. Video downloads also don't count towards the offical ratings (at least not that I know of).

Truth be told, I've been of the opinion that PR needed to be put to bed for sometime. Fifteen years is a long time to be doing essentially the same series over and over. In my area at least, the store shelves are still full of Power Ranger-themed toys (while I can't find a Transformer to save my life), which to me means they aren't selling. And who knows, even a temporary hiatus could be beneficial (I thought the hiatus between Cybertron and recent film was good for Transformers - though Animated's still on the "wait and see" list).[/i]

I unfortunately lost faith in the show when all cartoons were pulled from abc family and dumped onto toon disney. Since my cable company refuses to carry that channel on the non digital package we have and it costs about $50 more a month to upgrade just for that one channel. I haven't watched an episode since Mystic Forces's Dark Wish 3-parter.

Not only that but my local superstores still carry the old leftover Mystic Force guys and last years wave 1 Operation Overdrive. You know, the guys I bought for the last 2 X-mases. :P

Sentai will never die here in Nippon. It's been going strong for 30 years. The toys sell like crazy, the fanbase is enormous, and the television show is fairly cheap to produce.

I'd be willing to bet that, eventually, the new animated series will be subtitled (and/or dubbed) in Japanese and released over here. So we'll have both Super Sentai and Power Ranger Animated.

It does kind of suck for the fans in the west, though.

And Sentai is a lot better written than PR, right? Villains aren't goofy retards, the heroes have personalities that change throughout the series, and stories aren't lame.
