I've seen these Test Tube Aliens a couple times in the store.
Does anyone know anything about them?
Do they do something special or are they just some over priced junk?

Ive only seen them in cartoon commercials.
You feed them something, no doubt sugar water and their bodies grow.
And theres an online site as well testtubealiens.com
My son wants one, but I cant find them. What store did you see them in?

I've helped grow two. One at work (you don't want to know what happened to him ...) and one here at home.
You really only have to feed them until they get so big, after which they're self-sustaining. Once you're done feeding them you just have to make sure they get 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark.
With the website you can also "interact" with them. You can check to see how old they are as well as to see how much you've abused them. Pretty nifty how it does it, you hold them up to the monitor, the monitor flashes which a little sensor in them picks up and tells them which "report" to spit out. They then flash a certain pattern and you enter that pattern into the website and it tells you what's going on.
They're good for short term enjoyment, I only paid $23AU which to me isn't that pricey.

Uh, I found them at Target. They are about 12 dollars.
After what Burn says I might get one in the guise of "It's for my kid." I wondered exactly how it reacted online and now that I know it sounds like fun.
I was on the web page before I made this thread but didn't find nearly as much info as I did just now. Thanks!

But that just makes me want to know at happened to him even more! I may get one if I see them on sale just to try out the flashy monitor thing.

Basically Dodec grew quite large for his test tube, so my co-workers and a daughter of a co-worker decided to "liberate" him.
Of course they hatched this plan behind my back and waited for me to leave the office early one day. Once I was gone they fethced the hammer and well ... let's just say the test tube was harder than what they expected, so they hit harder.
Result?
Smashed test tube.
Decapitated Dodec.
So in their infinite wisdom and with the help of a paper clip Dodec's head was reattached and he was moved to new "home" in a much bigger jar.
Sadly though Dodec had died as his heart light had stopped flashing.
We kept him in the jar for a few days and I was examining him, poking him (they feel weird) and giving the others a hard time for murdering when his head kinda ... flopped off.
So there I was trying to wedge his head with paper clip dangling beneath back onto the rest of the body. I decided the paperclip needed moving so I pulled it out.
The heart light began to flash again ....
Yes, it turns out they had wedged the paper clip into a point where it turned him off. Removing the paper clip brought him back so after careful manipulation and numerous pokings with the paper clip the head was reattached (albeit loosely) and Dodec continues to flash away in his new home.
The one we have here at home probably wouldn't survive relocation either as I can see the body has split a bit from growing too much. Still though, they're fun for the first few weeks and you end up getting an emotional attachment to them (my mother insisted on Dodec being brought home so he could be buried in the backyard instead of being tossed in the bed, she also had a few choice words for the co-workers) as silly as that sounds.

If he was a real living creature that could be a horror story.

Like I said, you develop an emotional attachment to these things. Suffice to say the others had a lot of guilt over what they done, magnified when Dodec came back to life.

I can't remember when we got Dodec, may be close to a year now and he's still going (even with a decapitated head).
I guess it really depends on how long the battery lasts (which i'm assuming is the small round watch type batteries) and that would be dependant on how often he flashes.

So what wins?
These Test Tube Aliens or Amazing Live Sea Monkeys?
Looking at the full grown ones, some of them look like Mothra in caterpillar form.

As big as the test tube. If you move them to anything bigger they'll keep growing but the sponge stuff they're made out of will split (which it does in the tube anyway)
The guy whose name I liked better as TheMuffin wrote:Burn your story has me laughing so hard that I'm crying.
Excellenttttt....

Though it's hard not to laugh, especially when I was told the story of what happened. The second I was out the door it was a case of "He's gone! Get the hammer!"
So there's my co-worker kneeling on the floor hammering away at poor Dodec's test tube, her daughter standing there muttering "Darryl's going to be so pissed off at us" and my other co-worker sitting there shaking her head next thing *SMASH*, test tube shatters.
Screams through the office followed by numerous "oh shits", then sitting co-worker leans down and holds up severed head.
More screams followed by frantic running around trying to reattach the head and get him into his new home and then a quick clean up of the shattered test tube remains.
Which I should add they didn't do a good job of as I found a big chunk of it the next day.

Have you tried scanning him since the accident to see what it says about how much he's been abused?

Lazy, or afraid of the results?

Dodec and his cadre of evil aliens will hunt you down and hurt you for laughing at Dodec's pain and suffering!

(Hey it worked on the co-workers...)

Interesting, I might try and get one of these, though knowing my luck the dog will somehow get his teeth on it

I don't think I woould end up getting one. With my luck I would end up "killing" it unintentionally. Or it would be sitting by my window and the tube would have slimey algae growing in it.
