No, it's better to date somebody that you do not work with. Work relationships rarely last long, and they almost always, always end very badly. If things go south, you still have to see each other every single day. Even if things don't go south, it usually causes some sort of resentment amongst other co-workers. Work relationships are just a flat-out bad idea. Sorry.

Hmm. I'll keep those tips in mind then for the future.

From an employers perspective, it's not good either. You end up with a couple working for you, if one cracks the shits and leaves, the other is likely to follow, meaning you're down two workers.

If you're seriously considering dating a co-worker, the first person I'd suggest talking to is your boss. He'll be able to brush you up on company policy regarding workplace relationships, and he'll probably have some tips on what he expects out of and or whether or not it'll be looked down upon.

Or she, I suppose your boss could be a woman.

But after a heart to heart with your direct supervisor, you'll be better equipped to make a decision.

Don't be sorry. You're being honest. I appreciate it, that's what I'm looking for.

As for the situation, we're co-workers mainly in the sense that we work for the same store. We only work 3 days together (we have different days of the week off, which can be good and bad), and she works on the other side of the store. (It's a huge Walmart Supercenter.) I usually have to walk for 4-5 minutes just to find her, if I want to talk to her. Sometimes I see her when either we come in or we're going home. But it's not like we're side-by-side or see each other every day. But still, we work on the same shift at the same store. So I don't know.

As a supervisor, I would add to that. I believe you've said you work for Wal-Mart? I think their policies are similar to Coke's on this front. I'm not allowed to talk to subordinates about personal matters, and I'm expected to report any suspected "non professional" work relationships to HR. Even if your supervisor is a trusted friend, you can place him or her in a very awkward position.

Work relationships can work out, but it is exceedingly rare that they do. The heart wants what the heart wants, but I can't stress enough how bad of an idea it is.

Okay, that a little more info. I'd still advise extreme caution, but I was picturing you working on the same department with the lass.

Honestly, the very first thing you should do is look up the exact Wal-Mart policy on this. Get that info in hand first.

Good idea. I will do that. As for the woman, she's 7 years younger than me, and I don't know her that well, just some things we talk about during the 5-10 minutes we talk to each other 1-2 times a week. She gave me her number yesterday so I'll see about meeting her outside of work and go from there. Honestly, I was expecting her to reject me, so I have low to no expectations. If it goes anywhere, great, if not, it is what it is. I just brought it up because I haven't dated a coworker before, so I wasn't sure if I should approach it differently than if I had met her somewhere else. And yes, I have been advised in person with the phrase "Don't s**t where you eat." Also, another red flag for me, 1 of the guys I work with who also knows her advised me against asking her out. So I am treading very lightly.

Before I started at my current job, one guy (who left and came back) married one of the girls. They have kids together.

Roddy, if she gave you her number but those other guys are telling you to stead clear, they're probably just jealous. Only one way to find out now, eh?

Densh, I'm also a supervisor, so I know very well how awkward it is when people start dating in the workplace. BUT, and this is a pretty big but, I work in the restaurant industry, where it is frowned upon a whole lot less than in other industries. It usually doesn't work out any better for it, but it also doesn't usually work out any worse than relationships work outside of...well, work. It all depends on how well the people in the relationship can work professionally.

People in the hospitality industry, but Food and Beverage especially, tend to work long hard hours, oftentimes more than five days a week. So for some, work is the only place they CAN develop a relationship.

At the place I work, there were actually 3 couples at one time. One of them works well because she works breakfast in the main dining room and he works dinner in the pub, so they're not directly involved.

The other one worked until they went to a different resort where his mother was the director of F&B, and he was getting preferential treatment. Now she works at my place again and they're no longer a couple.

The third involved an alcoholic who used to drink on the job and a single mother with a Napoleon complex. So.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

I met my fiance and mother of my child at work, Rodimus. To make it even more awkward is that we're both teachers. Nobody was remotely arsed because we're talking about two adults choosing to spend time together. It is absolutely no business of anybody else's who you have a romantic relationship with. So even if it does go against their Gestapo HR policy, probably filed under sub-section "HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED", date her anyway and talk loudly and proudly about how much of a fun time you're having.

Bloody zealots.

Until it goes south and causes a lot of workplace drama that everyone else has to deal with. As previously described.

It was not MEANT to be a joke getting the point. Just pointing out that Burn juggles more than that, so it shouldn't be THAT hard for BC to juggle all of that AND me feeling for him.

Except you don't know what I juggle. Just like I don't know what BC juggles but I joked about it anyway. Therefore we assumed you were joking as well.

But because you weren't joking, it just makes you look stupid. Again, leave this thread. You're in over your head.
