hmm... when you say before... i take it you mean at the early stages of the first game.
I played the second but i gather of the first he started off as a zombied spartan (the ghost of sparta) with godly weapons.
Cervantes has incredible skill in terms of a mortal pirtate having lived atleast 25 years in his undead state after possibly 45 years alive (though Ivy does make that a bit confusing... if it's much longer for either) while Kratos has the skill of an exceptional spartan warrior of no more than 35 years. I'll let you decide the better level of skill.

If this is still considered even then, it will come down to the power of there weapons. Kratos had weapons that were strong enough to fight a god. Forged and powered by olympian gods. I'm not sure that the boss forms of either soul blade could match Aeries but Cervantes might manage it with both.
If i'm right Kratos initally started his fight with Aeries without the power of a god, but gained some durring his fight with him. From him. If not then he simply acquired godhood through the duration of the first game. But he was not the god of war until he actually killed Aeries.
So i don't really know...
