i think they showed it in dreamwave. they fought it out in a simulation and the only way hot rod could win was if he also sacrificed himself. hes faster, more dynamic and more agile, but hes also reckless.
while hot rod has a lot going for him, its nothing kup hasnt seen a thousand times before. in a close quarters fight kup would destroy him, at a distance hot rod could do some damage, and put up a good fight, but ultimately kup just has the skill, experience and cool head. hes not cocky, hes not impatient and he knows how to plan ahead and take advantage of a situation.
basically, the longer hot rod lasts the more careless and overconfident hes going to get, and as soon as he leaves himself open, hes dead.

Being suddenly sick and twisted, HR shoots his photon lasers or whatever at K, who is plunged into pain and basically paralysed for a minute. HR pulls off K's head and dismantles his body. K was old and therefore not quick enough to stop HR. K's body parts are fed to the Sharkticons.
