Money, space, money, and money, mostly.

But that's just me.

(I still don't have a combiner, not planning on getting one either.. but this one looks gorgeous.)

good point.I am running out of space too. but we're all getting that metroplex here right? that thing is at least twice as big as these combiners.

Nope. Stopped with the toys a while back. ;)

I really don't feel attached to the character of Devastator. I'm sure I will get Giant or Herc down the road, but not really too urgent about it. I was skeptical of whether or not TFC would be able to pull through, and obviously they did, but the fact that so many figures had errors and that the company even released an add-on set at the end showed me that patience does pay off.

2014 is the year of the Predaking and I have to say that I am a little overwhelmed. And a little stupified. There's only so many ways Predaking can be interpreted and for me, the third parties and their war with each other is nonsensical. Moving on, I'm sure some collectors are thinking, well which PK is going to match my Devastator.. For me, I'm thinking, well what if we get a really nice Predaking, Devastator and Superion that fit with each other, but then the companies doing Piranacon or Menasor don't even match my Giant and Feral Rex combo, but instead go with Hercules and Ares. I'll wait till all the Predakings are finished before I put my finger down. I'm sure people will save money with their preorders but eventually that money will have to put into the add-ons that fix the problems that the original figures all had.

Uranos is the the only Superion, but that's just it for me, it's the only one. It never really blew me away.

I only have Cupcake... errr. Car Crash from FP. I never liked any of the other 4 characters, but I'm sure I'll end up getting them all.

Then there's Quantron. He just, he's the most captivating looking combiner that I've seen. MakeToys well-defined muscle brick look really appeals to me.

MakeToys does seem to have a knack for brickish figures, I agree.
I'm still not convinced about combiners, for the reasons above, but Angel/Nova Prime is really tempting me.

I like the design except for the head. All of the 3rd party combiners seem to suffer from a small stubby head (proportionally) compared to the rest of the body.

I wish Computron's head was a bit larger and had a neck.

Nope, I agree completely. In fact, I think MT have taken multiple steps back with combiner teams in general. Same with FP ;)

I'm not 100% with you on FP.

Outside of the forearm/elbow gaps I don't see too much wrong with Intimidator. That Diesel's trailer extends to become the gestalt legs can be argued to be an engineering advance... :-?

Or the fact that Car Crash and T-Bone just peg on to said legs can be argued to be a step back... #-o

Don't get me wrong, I'm on board with Intimidator, but might replace him later on. The size, stupid transformations, poor quality, gestalt arms and peg on legs are all steps backwards. That said, I'm not worried about Diesel forming part of the lower legs and the feet.

Quantron makes Intimidator look almost (but not quite) as good as what TFC and MMC are doing.

I think it looks good, but MakeToys does seem to have an issue with necks/heads.

I have yellow Giant and his view is completely surrounded in blind spots. It looks so much better than Hercules, but dang. It just makes no sense to me as to how they could drop the ball with the head. The rest of the set is amazing.

Honestly, I'm fine with this design choice, and here's how I rationalize it.

1) A gestalt is much bigger and more powerful than a regular Transformer
2) A gestalt's hated foe is typically another gestalt or other uber-bot
3) Knowing his enemy, the gestalt will typically focus only on that other uber-bot. Typically this means that the two will face off against one another.
4) As the gestalt's focus only really needs to be on the uber-bot-foe, he cannot be distracted by lesser warriors.
5) The large blind spots also act as protection against a lesser bot trying to get a lucky shot (i.e. in the head or eyes).

I'm sure one can poke holes in this, but it works well enough to justify it in my head.

A neck would be nice. I'll still buy it as is, though. I mean, dang, it's niiice.

And not being funny, but since we were goofing around with it, their Giant set impressed me. I mean, it's my first and only MakeToys item, so I can't compare it to their other works, but it was quite a sight to behold and the build quality was better than FansProject, and FP has always made me swoon. So, yeah. If they could knock FP out of the throne for me, that's saying something.

I have a pretty good feeling that their Computron will be quite solid and beautiful once we see final pics. Even if he's stumping it without a neck. Stumputron. ...better not give Hasbro any ideas.

Rumour is FP and Maketoys have a "good relationship" (whatever that means) and even share designers.

Anyway, I don't have any 3rd party combiner, but I own Fansproject's Insecticons and both Maketoys Chaos/Fallen and Hypernovae/Nova Prime. They're all amazing items, perhaps Maketoys looking more solid or with a better plastic quality.

LOL, TFC fanboys. >:oP

I'm on the fence about the whole neck/no neck thing, because this is a combiner and the absence of the neck makes the guy look more intimidating, IMO. I mean Superion was always more elegant and needs to look slightly more 'willowy' than the other combiners. But I can live with Quantron looking rather hench.

Anyway I guess that Maketoys could always produce an aftermarket 'upgrade kit' to rape their fans for more money make their fans more happy.

Yeah, that "good relationship" has always been a smokescreen for "We're the same people, doing different things." I believe. I mean, they've never come out and say that, of course, but you'd have to prove otherwise to me. The plastic feels the same, the factories are supposedly the same, the designs have a generalized "feel" with FP's stuff. The difference is in the details in the design. MakeToys makes the Giant bots ever so slightly off from FansProject's stuff, such as... Even thought it's the same type of plastic, MakeToys seems to have it produced thicker and more solid.

Because they supposedly use the same factories, it would explain why one company gets stuff out during the other's hiatus. They need two factories so they can get out double the awesome.

It also explains why FansProject said they wouldn't step on toes and do what someone else is doing. If MakeToys makes Computron, they profit. They were the first to have Brainstorm, but ToyWorld beat them to market with their's. So far, FP has held up their word.

All of these things make me think FansMakeToysProject are one whole entity.

Well, he certainly does look a little too intimidating. If the neck, or lack thereof, is what provides that look, that is. And that's one thing I like about MakeToys. They give you everything you need to make it awesome, right out of the box. No double dipping in your wallet.

Agreed re. Maketoys and their not resorting to upgrade kits left right and center. I gave TFC the benefit of the doubt then they came up with the initial Devastator upgrade and thought, "well, at least they are listening to the fans"
Then they did the same thing again with Superion and tried to make a quick buck on their 'wings of your anus' upgrade and I realised they were just greedy. [-(
