Heh, it's funny cuz practically ever single release of the original G1 Megatron figure had something different about it. Going by all of those versions, ideas for redeco ideas for this figure are hardly in short supply.

  • 1984 Hasbro version: Silver chrome and red, stock, silencer, sight/Fusion Cannon, handheld gun, no spring-loaded bullet-firing gimmick
  • 1985 Hasbro version A: The 1984 Hasbro version w/ a rubsign on the toy's right arm
  • 1985 Hasbro version B: The 1894 Hasbro version w/ a rubsign on the toy's left hip guard
  • 1985 Takara version: Flat gray and blue, handheld gun, sword, 20 blue bullets, spring-loaded bullet-firing gimmick
  • 1985 Takara "Convoy VS Megatron" version: The 1985 Takara version packaged with Optimus Prime
  • 1986 Takara "Good Bye Megatron" version: Flat gray and red, sight/Fusion Cannon, sword, handheld gun, 20 red bullets, spring-loaded bullet-firing gimmick, packaged with Starscream
  • 2001 Takara reissue version: Silver chrome and red, stock, silencer, sight/Fusion Cannon, handheld gun, sword, 20 bullets, spring-loaded bullet-firing gimmick
  • 2001 e-HOBBY Black version: The 2001 Takara reissue version in dark gunmetal chrome, black, red, and brown
  • 2003 Takara Transformers Collection version: The 2001 Takara reissue version with a new Energon flail, Transformers Collection packaging, and a Decepticon mouse pad
  • 2003 e-HOBBY Collector's Edition Megaplex version: The 1985 Takara version with all of the 2003 Takara Transformers Collection version, with the flail now yellow instead of purple
  • Unreleased Hasbro Commemorative Series Lava Megatron"/"Safety Megatron" version: blue chrome, orange, red, silencer, stock, sight/Fusion Cannon, handheld gun, sword, no spring-loaded bullet-firing gimmick
  • 2007 Takara Encore version: The 2001 Takara reissue version, but now with tan-shaded gray plastic and tan-shaded silver chrome
  • 2009 e-HOBBY Collector's Edition Black version: The 2001 e-HOBBY Black version packaged in Collector's Edition packaging and with an all new comic
  • 2011 e-HOBBY Chronicle version: 1986 Takara "Good Bye Megatron" version with a darker gray, tampographed symbols, no Starscream, and packaged with a redeco of Voyager DOTM Megatron
But, to give some redeco ideas for something beyond just "Megatron as himself but with a slight change of color", there's there black version, the gold MP-5 version, the unreleased "safety" version, the "Man of Iron" cover/Conder Verlag covers version, Megaplex, Emirate Xaaron...

I can confirm that both anime export and hlj have a pile of loot system.

Wrong!

:-P

I still like Despy better. I like the thicker legs, as I think it gives Megatron a more badass look. I'm also not a huge fan of the effort Takara is making to be more cartoon accurate. I think the Megatron cartoon model is too weak looking.

What I do like about 36 here, is the fusion cannon. This may be the best Megatron weapon we've seen yet. Like I said, I'd tie this with Appolyon for second (maybe put it ahead, well see with final product images) best MP Megatron, but Despots in still holds the crown for me. ;)

Is it so much a problem when the fiction depicts him as having really become that big in that new body?

Only if you like the fiction so much that you want to buy the toys to have a display for them.
The fiction in this case being... Transformers Legends, slightly humorous pack-in comics for the toys they come with.

Well, he likes the G1 cartoon enough to apply to its scale. The Legends manga are in continuity with the cartoon (at least, the parts that take place in the cartoon's continuity are), and Megatron's new body in the comics showed him to have gotten huge after his then-latest body upgrade from his many cartoon continuity bodies (G1 Megatron body --> G1 Galvatron body --> Super Megatron body --> Ultra Megatron body --> Action Master Cybertron Alliance body --> G-2 purple tank body --> back to his original G1 Megatron body --> huge-sized Legends Megatron body, and then later his Legends Headmaster Galvatron body).

Like all the Megatron offering he has good points and bad points.

The good being the general shape, I like the unusual colouring - though I'm certain they will do another version in silver too.
Accessories are OK, faces are OK & I like the way he used the gun stock as a stand and can form the other modes from the Gun robo design, The legs work well in robot mode.

The bad

The barrel is to far to the side on his back it looks weird, he's covered in panel lines - not very clean looking at all. The gun handle is rather thick.
I dislike the cartoon logo.

In conclusion - I'll likely buy a loose one of lena

After getting to look Megs over I have to say he looks fantastic. My only real complaint would be the use of the Sunbow Decepticon symbol as opposed to the standard symbol. I'm really hoping this changes with the production figure.

Those look to me to be hinged skirt plates so his hip/thigh can bend all the way up. The same way Shockwave, Hot Rod, or even Ironhide have hinged skirts.

Man, the more I look at this the more I'm saddened by the idea that I may have to hold off. I'd really prefer a more toy accurate version with more red. Like on the inside of his arms and calves. The contrast of the silver and the red is such a defining look for Megatron for me. And ya, the cartoon insignias are not doing it for me. :(

It might surprise you to hear this, but I'm right there with you Cobs. I've always loved the extra bits of red on the arms and legs. And I honestly didn't notice the flat grey until it was mentioned. I would gladly welcome a MP36X ;)

Cobotron wrote:And ya, the cartoon insignias are not doing it for me. :(
Also not feeling it at all. I was annoyed with Shockwave having no tampo's, but at least we were given the option. If that toon insignia is in fact tampo'd on, that'd be a shame.

I'd say if Hasbro were to release MP-36 you guys would be in luck since they typically like to go the toy route with their decos. Sadly we know Hasbro won't touch this Megatron with a 10 foot pole. Maybe there's hope in a Hasbro Asia release that homages the toy?

It's more about my own impatience. Can I actually wait for when and/or if they do a different release. I mean how many purple and green Primes are there now? :-P

Sure. Hasbro Asia would be a likely candidate for the job. And with Delta Magnus, Loud Pedal, and the rest of the Diaclone releases, there is precedence that Takara does do toy influenced decos. So....

I'm still betting there will be a toy accurate purple Shockwave down the road, but I couldn't wait for that.

Yeah. I can also come up with a backstory, but I don't like Megatron to tower over Prime. Wish I could shrink him down, now that he's almost finished serving his purpose. ;) But at least he'll have company once the new Brainstorm replaces the first one.

The shapes on Megatron's abs are cast in translucent plastic, looks nice.
