America did indeed land on the moon. Several times.
I'll let my man Phil Plaite do the leg-work:

That's the tip of the ice-berg folks. Any shred of evidence that we didn't land on the moon, I will debunk and explain correctly why such and such aspect of the moon is the way it is.
Fire away. (Though it will probably take me a while to respond.)

However, My Greatgrandmother died believing it was a hoax. She said it was only done to put fear into the USSR.
That's all I got.

It is a waste of money. Once you're up there, what is there to do? Plant another flag? The only reason we did it in the first place was to prove that we could. Now that we have, there is no more reason to go up there again. Now we have to plant a flag on a comet to prove that we can.
It is just like infants. When they learn a new function of their bodies (moving a finger) they do it a few times and move on to making something else move.
In other words: find out what you can do, do it, move on.

I've heard moon dust can cause cancer.
I believe we landed on the moon.

People just don't think about it. For some reason, people figure it's no good, and are more concerned with what Paris Hilton ate for breakfast than unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos.
Supposedly, for the fraction of the total national budget the USA puts into NASA, we have output about a 4000% net gain by just inventing products and improving existing ones trying to overcome space travel. Jet aircraft? Computers? Radio? Satellite Communications? TV? Internet? Temprapedic pillows and Non-stick pans!?! It's everywhere.
And it's pretty clear any arguments used at the moment against the lunar landing are bunk.
In addition to wikipedia's "Lunar Landing Hoax" page, here's a guy that does a point-for-point debunking of a Fox program that is reponsible for a lot of believers in this conspiracy theory:

I realize it costs loads of money, there's nothing to do there (although the nuclear dump idea's not bad...) but come on...we should've at least gone back once just to keep our "reflexes" in tip top shape.
I'm literally right in the middle. I'm willing to believe it was real, I'm also willing to believe it was a hoax.
We've got proof all around us, but how do we know what is what?
Watch "Capricorn One" and you'll see how easy it is to defraud the public with something like this.

We haven't gone back because it's silly to do so at this moment in time. Why spend money on the moon when we can spend money on looking at Pluto or landing on Titan.
So what if the moon can be used for something? That's not what NASA does. If the government wants to investigate using it for something, they will have NASA start coming up with the technology first and then actually returning people there to use it later.
And why bother with going to all that trouble when you can still do those things on earth? Mining? It's right here. Toxic Waste dump? If we're going to spend the money to make a dump on the moon, why not just spend a fraction of the money to just shoot it off into the sun? It's much, much, MUCH cheaper to point a rocket at the sun then to ready people to go to the moon.
So the answer to your question is, returning to the moon, at this juncture, is pointless and expensive.
@ Autobot032:
To "keep our reflexes in tip top shape?" That's even more pointless because of the money involved.

That's what happens when you skim. Wikipedia provides a similar, more inclusive rebuttal. Anyway, we're planning to go back to the moon in about ten years to investigate and retune our launching and space travel methods, and even possibly build a launching pad, for our mission to Mars.

what's up there that's not already down here, current theory is that the moon was originally part of earth so it'll have the same elemental composition,
anyway anything you do mine there you have bring back here, so that's 2 lift offs and landings per trip
and could you imagine what would of happened if Challenger was full of nuclear waste?
