Well, which parts do you consider unexplained? The first movie was terrible in this department, actually. We never did find out about Barricade's fate.
And relying on the comics as an answer to what happened doesn't work with me. The general audience watched the movie and assumed he died. Only fans would know what happened in the comics, even lesser numbers of people would actually buy the comics.
As for the Constructicons, that's easy.
The hatchlings seem to be the only sentient Decepticons (aside from Megatron, Soundwave, Starscream, etc. This would also explain why Starscream was so worried about them dying.) I'd say outside of Devastator, the rest were drones, and they copied the same Earth modes. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Devastator wasn't individual Constructicons, he was one mind shared over multiple components, just like Arcee was, and Magmatron from BW Neo before them.
That's why there were so many Constructicons. Had they used the Stunticons instead of Constructicons, we would've seen the same scenario, just cars and trucks instead of construction equipment.
Ever wondered why we never see duplicate robots of Optimus, Megatron, and the like? Because they're sentient. I'm not sure they can be copied. I'm not even sure that Devastator was sentient.

Thats another thing. They need to balance out the losses on both sides. I know you dont go to a movie to see the bad guys win but cant we at least have a Decepticon aside from Megatron kill an Autobot? There are a great deal of Decepticon fans out there, myself included. In the next movie, try not to make the giant, scary, killing monsters known as the Decepticons get slaughtered by the good guys.
Evening it out wouldn't be realistic. At all. In war, no one has equal numbers die. Someone always has superior firepower, or sneak attacks etc. Evening it out would just look silly. A compromise to make everyone happy, and the audience is smart enough to figure it out sooner or later.
