Well, Knock Out has prior counterparts; just not in G1. Unless you do count Micromaster Knockout (as I like to).

Which you shouldn't. None them are a red sportscar or a medic, and what's in a name? Would you consider Armada Smokescreen to be a new version of G1 Smokescreen?

Yes, I would. I don't understand, if they don't look the same in every one of their incarnations, they're not worthy of being an earlier incardination?

The word is "incarnation", and no.
To me, a name is more than just a monicker,
it's part of the character and the traits it should possess. Smokescreen, at least to me. has to be a red and blue race car to qualify, Ratchet has to be an ambulance or medic, Starscream has to be a jet and a schemer, etc.

As strange as it may sound, that's how the instructions tell you how to transform the arms. The instructions!
