The gift was even automatically added to my order. But it wasn't listed in my email confirmation, nor is the promo listed on the site anymore. I think it was just a case of bad timing that led some to think they could still get the bonus set.

Lego fansites said the promotion had been extended. The Brick Fan is part of their promotional network, so their updates usually come directly from Lego's marketing partners.

Not definitive, though, possible there was a mixup somewhere.

I'll be honest, that doesn't look THAT bad.
It reminds me of Classics "The Ultimate Battle" Deluxe class Optimus Prime.RodimusPrimeUkraine1 wrote:chuckdawg1999 wrote:MaximalNui wrote:So, the page about the set has an example of and early design, and well...

This would be much cheaper for sure though this was probably back when they couldn't decide how expensive they could make it or the budget.

It also feels like what we would have gotten had we gotten an official LEGO G1 Optimus Prime back in the Unicron Trilogy/Movie Trilogy years.

It isn't so much that it looks bad, just that the final version looks much better. And probably more stable/less fiddly.

Good point! I'm surprised it didn't sell out and is still available.

You can always wait for the KO, I'm sure that's gonna be out soon as well

Possibly, but unlikely since The Lego Group strikes hard as Lepin knows from experience: that Chinese brand copied whole sets, even ones from licensed properties like Pirates of the Caribbean and even had the balls to sell sets based on fan builds or MOC's (My Own Creation). Naturally, they were shut down somewhere in 2017-2018.
There are tons of brands that use the basic interlocking brick design as it's public domain along with some basic pieces IIRC, but copying whole sets brick by brick is asking for trouble.
Isn't there a rule against promoting KO's by the way?

Yes Lego gets KO'ed all the time. Lepin might be gone, but in its place there's now King, Queen, Super 18K, Jie Star, and probably others. King and Queen are straight KO's, while Super 18K and Jie Star usually have some improvements or additional features.
But anyways, don't wanna derail the thread or break any rules
