Polyhex - The Hexagon: Shockwave's Tower

Homeworld of the Transformers. Drained and ravaged by thousands of vorns of civil war, Cybertron is a mere barren husk of once beautiful and thriving cybernetic world. While recovered enough to allow Transformers to move on its surface once again, it is still plagued by ion storms and any Transformer unfortunate enough to venture there without energon supply of their own is certain to face a stasis lock.

Razorclaw bounded across the destroyed landscape in his beast mode, heading for the location where the first surveillance equipment would be set up. He could see Divebomb circling overhead as he got closer to the coordinates. Astroseconds later, the Predacon Commander finally reached his destination and transformed back to robot mode as Divebomb did the same and landed next to him. “What happened to Weirdwolf?” The flying Pred asked, looking around for the yellow wolf bot.

“He couldn’t keep up, so I left him behind. We don't have forever and a cycle,” Razorclaw responded as he turned to the hover cart that he had been pulling behind himself. He reached in and grabbed a few portable cameras before handing them off to Divebomb. “Take these and firmly attach each to the tops of the surrounding structures. We need optics in the sky as well as on the ground. Meanwhile, I’ll get to work down here.”

“You got it,” Divebomb responded, taking the devices from his leader. Lifting off, the flying Predacon did what he was told and secured the cameras to the tops of the designated buildings. On the ground, Razorclaw set up the necessary sensors and other surveillance equipment, hiding each with the help of small holo-projectors that would make the devices virtually invisible to enemy sensors.

“We’re done here,” Razorclaw spoke, standing and looking to the sky at Divebomb. “Fly ahead to the next locations and ensure they are clear of vermin. We’ll repeat the process we just did and then move on to Sector 2. Understood?” The flying Pred looked down and nodded. He then returned to eagle mode and flew off towards the next set of coordinates.

Transforming to beast mode, Razorclaw hooked himself back up to the hover cart full of surveillance equipment and then leapt forward in the direction of the next location.

Tantrum skidded to a stop roughly the distance Swindle had requested. He snorted and pawed the ground, shaking his head to flick off a few loose bits of debris hanging off of his horns. He had enjoyed smashing through some stuff. It had helped relieve some of the frustration he was feeling. Unfortunately he was likely to get frustrated again real soon. Other than fuel he wasn’t real good at handling anything delicate. He was built to smash and slam through things. Scientific instrumentation wasn’t anything he was good at handling.

The Predacon transformed to his robot mode and sighed. He did his best to bottle up his frustration and anger before turning back to Swindle who had been trailing after him. “What do we do now? I’ll lift the heavy stuff, and you can push all of the buttons and stuff. Just tell me what to lift and where to put it.”

Outskirts of Polyhex

The commandeered vehicle pulled to a stop just outside the Polyhex border. Grimlock popped the hatched and stepped outside, looking around. Polyhex had seen a lot more action than Iacon had, as was evident by the wrecked state of the city. Not many buildings were left standing at all and the roads made the wrecked ones they had just driven over look like newly paved superhighways. Even with all of that, you could still see Shockwave’s personal tower standing high above the wreckage.

Mechs who said Shockwave was all logic had obviously never seen his tower. It took quite an ego to erect a building like that in the middle of a warzone, not to mention the power it would take to keep it shielded from the worst of the bombardments and battles Polyhex had seen.

Swoop landed on top of the vehicle, perched on the edge in his pterodactyl mode. “The outskirts look pretty deserted boss, but I didn’t check much further than that. If the Cons are here they must be working on getting sensors online. I didn’t want to give away our position to them by flying around the city.” He jumped down and transformed to his robot mode. “The roads get even worse further in. Looks like we are gonna have to go in on foot.”

Grimlock grunted. “That fine with me. Me tired of being freight haul driver anyway.” He gestured for the other Dinobots to exit the vehicle. “We going in on foot and staying together. If lucky we find some Cons to crush, make us and Magnus happy. If we unlucky we find nothing but vermin and pile back in vehicle for long trip. Me tired of driving and itching for fight and me guessing the rest of you feel the same. Keep fingers crossed.” With that the Dinobot leader produced his rifle and began leading his team into Polyhex.

Sludge stood near Grimlock as the Dinobot Commander brought the vehicle to a stop near the border to Polyhex. His leader wasted no time in exiting the vehicle and surveying the area. The Jungle Warrior stood at the doorway and listened as Swoop flew down from above and gave their leader his report. Once Grimlock motioned for the rest of the Dinobots to exit the cramped transport, Sludge eagerly stepped out and finally stretched his legs. He peered around at the heavily damaged ruins of Polyhex, which were in far worse shape than Iacon. It was nice to see that the Decepticon city was more of a crumbling wreck than the former Autobot metropolis.

Serves them right, Sludge thought with a grin as Grimlock then began to speak. The Jungle Warrior listened intently, nodding when his commander suggested that they were all itching for a fight. Sludge hoped they would find a real foe to do battle with instead of just more cyber-rats. Those little critters moved around too fast and were hard to catch, especially for a big, slow-going mech like Sludge. "Me with you, boss bot," Sludge said, walking besides Grimlock as the Dinobots were lead deep into enemy territory. The Jungle Warrior drew out his sword in one hand and his laser pistol in the other. “Me ready for anything.”

Near Sector 2 – Southeast of Shockwave’s Tower

Razorclaw and Divebomb had finished setting up surveillance equipment at three additional locations in Sector 1, repeating what they had done at the first set of coordinates. The Predacon Commander took care of ground based sensors while his airborne subordinate handled the setting up of cameras and detection devices high above Cybertron’s surface. They had worked well together and created a tight grid that covered all of Sector 1. Razorclaw basically told Divebomb what to do and the flying Predacon obeyed. The mechanical bird had no choice if he wanted to continue functioning.

Now it was time to move on to Sector 2 which was only a few kliks away from their current position. Razorclaw stopped, returning to robot mode, and opened a comm line to Divebomb who was circling overhead. >>Divebomb, fly ahead into Sector 2 and scout the designated areas for the remaining surveillance equipment to be installed. I’ll meet you at the closest set of coordinates in one breem. Understood?<<

>>Roger that, commander. I’m on my way.<<

Divebomb took off into the distance as Razorclaw then opened a secure channel to the rest of the Predacons along with Swindle, who were busy setting up surveillance in the neighboring sectors:

>>This is Razorclaw. Sector 1 is done and ready to go online. Divebomb and I are now moving on to Sector 2 to begin further installation of the surveillance grid. I want an immediate status report on each team’s progress thus far. How much longer until your assigned sectors are completed?<<

Shockwave’s Tower – The Nerve Center

Blackwind’s attention turned from Thunderwing to Shockwave as the one eyed mech mentioned his lack of use for her. Her glare bore into him as her face twisted into a scowl. The nerve of him to say she was of no use to him; in fact she was very useful to him, and the Empire, but he seemed too narrow minded to realize that. Blackwind turned on her heal and made her way out of the Command Center after Thunderwing. Once the doors slid shut she stopped, her hands balled tightly into fists.

“That obsequious lout! How dare he say I am of no use to him! I am a cornerstone within this Empire!”

She grew silent; her hands tightly clenched that she nearly drew energon. The Commander needed to be taken down a notch, but she had no way of doing that, not without him finding out or her being reprimanded by her Master. She would just have to perform her duty as Megatron requested….find out everything there was to know about his past, experiments and what his future goals are.

Blackwind finally took in a few deep breathes and unclenched her hands. Her head tilted back so that she looked directly at the ceiling. After a moment she lowered her head and then looked up at Thunderwing. She offered the scientist a forced smile as she spoke, this time in a more calm tone.

“My apologies. I shouldn’t have made such an specticle of myself. I hope you’ll be able to forgive me.”

Shockwave’s Tower – Leaving The Nerve Center

Thunderwing silently walked out of the Nerve Center after being dismissed by Shockwave. It hadn’t exactly been the ideal meeting with Shockwave he might have been hoping for, but despite the frustrations he still felt he had learned a great deal, both from what was said and left unsaid. The plans of both Megatron and Shockwave were very ambitious, something he should have expected from the arrival of such a high ranking Decepticon to take personal charge of the mission.

The problem was that this plan was likely to be too ambitious. It sounded like a mission necessitating a full research and science team along with a fairly heavy combat unit and ample fuel to keep all of those involved and their equipment running at peak efficiency. What they had wasn’t even close to that. While the Predacons were certainly a crack unit, he wasn’t entirely convinced they had the patience to play a more defensive role in protecting the rest of them while they conducted research. As for those doing the research, from what he had seen so far only Shockwave and himself were truly qualified for it. Blackwind, while intelligent, didn’t have the specialized scientific or technical expertise that he or the commander had. Even with all of that the lack of fuel was liable to be the most difficult hindrance.

All in all it was enough to make him wonder whether they had been set up to fail in this task. The sudden mysterious reappearance of Shockwave certainly raised some questions, along with Blackwind sent to keep an eye on him. Perhaps the entire situation had been constructed so Shockwave would fail miserably so he could be removed, or perhaps was there something much larger going on, a secret plan by Megatron, Shockwave or even both of them. He would have to tread carefully in any case.

His attention was drawn away from his thoughts as Blackwind vented over her treatment by Shockwave. The Decepticon waited until she had calmed down to reply. “No need to apologize. Shockwave tends to have that effect on others.” He smiled. “Just maintain that cool façade in front of him and you should be alright. Anyone who thinks he is truly without emotion is a fool. He loves to rub in his superior position and intellect when he can. I’m sure he was quite intent on needling you with his comments.”

Thunderwing came to a stop as he spotted two Decepticons he didn’t recognize approaching them.

Shockwave’s Tower - Corridors

Darkwing and Dreadwind made their way from the hangar to the command center.

“So back on Cybertron. I have to say the place hasn’t improved at all in our absence.”

“It’s a dead world, a perfect place for us to end our existence,” Dreadwind replied.

“Just as long as we can take some Autobots down with us. That’s really all I ask for,” Darkwing added. “I assume that’s why Shockwave called us in. We are everyone’s favorite expendable soldiers. Expendable soldiers with a brain at least, compared to those seekers.”

“The most important part of all of that is the expendable part. This planet is already like a tomb marker for our race. Now its time for a last few of us to die pointlessly on it.”

Darkwing said nothing in reply, seeing more than a little truth in Dreadwind’s words. He didn’t speak again until he spotted the two Decepticons walking towards them.

“Greetings Thunderwing! And you must be Blackwind. Commander Shockwave summoned us and asked us to report to you. It seems that we are to be your aerial contingent. I am Darkwing and my jovial friend here is Dreadwind.” Dreadwind shot an annoyed glance at Darkwing before simply nodding. “What are your orders?”

Outskirts of Polyhex – Moving Towards Shockwave’s Tower

It was slow going for the Dinobots. They were all pretty used to walking and smashing their way through tough terrain, but none of them were exactly fast on their feet. Grimlock briefly considered splitting them all up to cover more ground quickly, but dismissed it. Ideally they would be able to pick off the Decepticons one or two at a time while they were out patrolling and before they could inform anyone else about their presence. It wasn’t quite the major, stand up type of battle he preferred, but not knowing the numbers they were up against he didn’t want to commit too much more than that. Anyway, as long as it ended with some dead Cons, he would be happy.

Sector 4

"Ok...One set here..." Swindle double-checks his coordinates, trying to compensate for all the dislodge rock and rubble lying around. "And one over by that...oh, there's a skyscraper fallen on top of it. Wonderful." Swindle waits for Tantrum to give him the equipment, and starts work on assembling the second sensor. "You don't mind shifting that building to one side, do you, Tantrum? Or at breaking it into managable chunks? It'll means we're out of here a lot faster." And maybe you can finally stop sparking like a busted hyper-transistor after you blow off some steam.

Swindle peeped into the hoverkart. Three more after this...at this rate, we'll have flattened the ruins and Shockwave can see everything just by looking out his window.

Shockwave’s Tower – The Nerve Center

With Thunderwing and Megatron's favorite spybot taking their leave, Shockwave could turn his full attention back to analyzing the data provided him by the tower's records. It didn't take long for the combination of his own massive processing ability enchanted by the supercomputers of the tower to start cracking results. How and why Cybertron had deteriorated into its current state, the effects of its regenesis so far and the following hypothesis regarding time frame it planet would require to heal were much clearer to him now. The planet would heal itself eventually if left in peace, that was certain. However it was not an option for it would take too long to be strategically viable option. However, just as he had predicted earlier the process could be significantly sped up through feeding the planet with energon. Unfortunately even this option was not feasible considering the current level of resources Megatron could provide.

Swallowing his disappointment, Shockwave set the idea of reviving Cybertron aside for now - a better time for it would present itself eventually. For now, it was better the focus on options that would provide more immediate results. And this was where the ore-13 sample came took the priority in Shockwave's mind. Directing the automations in the main lab to remove smaller samples out of the larger sample provided him by Starscream, Shockwave started a series of different tests to understand the abilities of the ore he had in his disposal. Starting from raw material analysis he quickly formed several patterns of refining the ore into usable energon and set the lab drones to build different types of equipment required for the refining process.

Being forced to wait until the drones were ready with their construction task, Shockwave began analyzing the data he had about Thunderwing's synthesized shell research. There was no doubt of Thunderwing's brilliance when it came to scientific thinking. Of course it could not compare to that of hiw own but nevertheless Shockwave could give credit to where it was due. They had to start experimenting with this technology with haste but for that, test subjects would need to be acquired. There were too few Decepticons left to risk the empire's operative capacity through experimenting on their own soldiers. No, they needed Autobots and someone would need to provide them to him and Thunderwing.

>>"Shockwave to Thunderwing. I have analyzed your research further and feel confident that we should start testing with living subjects as soon as possible. Our resources do not allow room for failures in case of using Decepticons as test subjects. Because of this we need to acquire Autobots or other sentient Cybertronians to serve this function. I trust this task to you. You have Blackwind, Darkwing and Dreadwind in your disposal to help you with this task. Victory to the Decepticons."<<

Shockwave’s Tower – Corridors

Blackwind smiled slightly at Thunderwing’s comment. He was probably right. Shockwave was a mech that had emotion; even if he hid it remnants appear at times. She moved along the corridors beside the towering scientist until she noticed two Decepticons coming towards them from the opposite direction. Blackwind knew that there were no other mechs in the tower; the ones that arrived with her on the ship were all out performing tasks Shockwave had ordered. She waited until they both arrived and stood in front of them both.

Blackwind listened to Darkwing’s introduction and nodded at the two of them. She let out a heavy sigh when he finished speaking. Obviously Shockwave had called them in for reinforcements, but also to keep her preoccupied so that she could not perform her own duties. They were part of the air corps so it fell to her to brief them and give them their orders.

Blackwind looked up at Thunderwing as she spoke to the scientist.

“My apologies once again. It would seem that the Commander has dropped these two on me without word. I will meet you back in your lab once I’ve briefed and given them their orders.”

She looked back at Darkwing and Dreadwind, a stoic look on her face. She waved them on as she moved past them and began to make her way to her office.

“This way gentlemen. We’ll talk in my office.”

Shockwave’s Tower – Corridors

Thunderwing stiffened a bit as he received the message from Shockwave. He had not expected a reply so quickly. Apparently the commander was a bit more efficient than he had suspected. He would have to modify his own plans accordingly.

>>”As you command Shockwave. It may take time to acquire a test subject however, due to the lack of life on planet and the unknown situation with the Autobots on planet. This time will not go to waste however, as I will use it to gather materials and data to replicate the process on another being.”<<

He glanced back at Blackwind and the two newcomers. “That is quite alright. I have business to attend to in my laboratory. It seems the Commander is escalating our timeline. I may require the assistance of you and your two charges very soon.” He nodded to the three Decepticons and left for his lab.

*

Darkwing and Dreadwind followed after Blackwind as she walked to her office. Darkwing was the first to speak up. “So I assume the atmosphere on planet has become less toxic then? Instead of immediate stasis lock we can look forward to gradually being poisoned and corroded until we shut down?”

Dreadwind then spoke up as well. “I knew I felt something as we entered the atmosphere! You dismissed it, but I knew I felt some extra burning and a jolt of electricity. I knew those rumors about Cybertron were recovering were false. They wouldn’t send us on a mission to this planet unless they intended it to be our last.”

Darkwing rolled his optics. “Please don’t scare away our new commanding officer yet Dreadwind. I’m sure you’ll be able to do that later. For now I’d like to try and make a decent first impression. Sure, this is probably another pointless suicide mission, but I think we can at least try to avoid having our superior hate us right off the bat.”

Shockwave’s Tower – The Nerve Center

Sometime after receiving Thunderwing's reply:

"Do you understand your mission?" Shockwave demanded to know from a large, dark green and pink Decepticon before him whose most unique feature in robot mode was peculiar wedge shaped teeth, clearly capable of biting through anything the Decepticon could stuff into his mouth.

"Take a hoverboard, enter the underground service tunnels and secure an unblocked route into the plasma energy chamber. Remove obstacles by hand. Or by jaws in my case." The Decepticon grinned at his own joke before continuing. "No explosives that could alert any of seismic sensors of the Autobots. Secure a sample from the chamber and return with it so you can determine if it can be used to to build something big for Megatron." Skullcruncher repeated the mission parameters given him by Shockwave only moments earlier. "Sounds pretty clear to me and thanks to Soundwave I have couple of nasty surprises if I run into Autobots down there."

"Do not use them unless the situation warrants it. We do not have energon waste. You were called to Cybertron with Darkwing and Dreadwind because you are less dependant on energon than most of us and due to your skills able to venture to Cybertron's core without a whole squad and survive hostile contact with the cyberbeasts of the depths that still may live." Shockwave explained, his single optic and monotone voice showing as little emotion as always.

"Of course commander Shockwave. Victory to Decepticons!" Skullcruncher bellowed, hitting his chest with his fist with a loud clang and then turning on his heels and marching out of the nerve center.

After Skullcruncher's departure it became apparent that the drones in the main lab would make Shockwave wait for the equipment he had ordered for sometime. This forced the ancient Decepticon to turn his attention elsewhere. Namely to the Predacons whom he had sent out to reinforce the badly damaged sensor network of Polyhex. Surely they had to be nearly finished with their task. Yet, for some reason none of the sensor beacons had been activated so far.

Opening a heavily decrypted communications channel to the Predacon commander Razorclaw, Shockwave demanded for a report. >>"Shockwave to Razorclaw. Report your progress."<<

Sector 2 – Southeast of Shockwave’s Tower

Razorclaw made his way into Sector 2 as he received a status report from Headstrong and Rampage. Their mission was coming along well with Sector 5 completed and online and Sector 6 already begun. The Predacon Commander now only awaited word from the team of Swindle and Tantrum. It was odd that they had not checked in yet. Razorclaw didn’t expect much from Swindle. The Decepticon arms dealer was hardly worthy of a Predacon’s attention. But Tantrum knew better than to ignore an order from his commanding officer.

Razorclaw was about to open a direct channel to Swindle and Tantrum when he received a secured communiqué from Shockwave. The Predacon Leader opened an equally encrypted channel back to the cycloptic mech:

>>Commander Shockwave – this is Razorclaw. I am happy to report that the surveillance grid in Sector 1 is completed and will be online shortly. Divebomb and I have already moved on to Sector 2 and have begun laying out more sensors. We should be finished within two cycles if not sooner. The other two teams have reported satisfactory progress in their territories. The beacons in Sector 5 should be online now, and the rest will soon follow. I will report back to you when all is done. Razorclaw out.<<

The Predacon Commander had not been entirely honest with Shockwave, having not yet heard from Swindle and Tantrum like he had just indicated. He did not want the purple mech thinking him ill equipped to handle this mission or to be in control of his own team. The entire surveillance grid would be up and running in a few cycles even if Razorclaw had to do it all himself.

Before continuing onward, Razorclaw slid open a panel in his forearm, revealing a remote control pad. He pushed a small button near his wrist socket which sent out an encoded signal that activated the sensor grid spread throughout Sector 1. Shockwave should detect the activation in his tower’s Nerve Center momentarily.

Then with a look of impatience on his faceplate, Razorclaw opened another secured channel, this time to his wayward team in Sectors 3 and 4:

>>Swindle! Tantrum! I want a status report from you two without delay!<<

Shockwave’s Tower – Blackwind’s Office

As the trio of Decpticons made their way through the corridors of the tower, Blackwind tuned out Darkwing’s and Dreadwind’s inane dribble. Once they had arrived at their destination Blackwind entered the security code and then strode into the room. She made her way to the desk at the far end of the office and took a seat. She set right to work at her terminal looking up the two contingent warriors’ personnel files.

The Aerospace Coordinator sat in silence for some time before she finally spoke up. She leaned back in her chair and intertwined her fingers in front of her. When she did speak it was in a low, stern tone.

“You two are known among your peers as ‘Doom and Gloom’ and I see you live up to those nicknames.” She waited a moment before continuing. “Your outlook on this war is morose and final; however, this has made you formidable warriors.”

She leaned forward and took hold of an available datapad from the desk. After inputting some information she looked back up at Darkwing and Dreadwind.

“I need to know where you were last stationed and what your assignments were, and please leave out how useless the mission was.”

Shockwave’s Tower – Blackwind’s Office

Darkwing was mildly annoyed at being ignored by their new commanding officer, but he tried not to let it show. Dreadwind on the other hand was pretty used to be ignored. It was actually better than the treatment he often got of being insulted or ridiculed. At least being ignored meant you didn’t get any negative attention and were less likely to get sent out on some suicidal mission. Of course, he also knew it wouldn’t last.

The two fliers sat down at Blackwind’s desk and waited as she reviewed some documents. Darkwing began to fidget a bit as Dreadwind sighed and slumped in his chair. He knew that she was practically deciding their fate before their optics. He always hated how the military worked like that, putting your life in the hands of someone who likely didn’t care one way or the other about you. In most cases it seemed it was someone who had it in for you anyway, at least that’s how he saw it.

Finally she spoke up. Darkwing frowned at the mention of their supposed ‘nicknames’ while Dreadwind merely sighed. “Well if those are supposed to be our nicknames I would like it known that I am Doom and he is Gloom then.” Dreadwind shook his head in annoyance as Blackwind went on.

Darkwing was the one to answer her question. “We were part of the infiltration mission on Nebulos.” Dreadwind piped up, “The mission was going well, slowly building up, no major skirmishes with Autobots. I should have known we were going to get reassigned to a mission on a poisoned world.

Edge of Sector 3

Swindle gingerly puts down the sensor node he'd been handling and opens up his wrist-comm. "Reporting, Commander Razorclaw. We're finished with Sector 4, working on 3. We'd be going faster, but the terrains rough, a lot of buildings where they shouldn't be.

Swindle winces as he hears a loud crunching noise nearby. "Er, commander, does Shockwave care much about the condition of the city sectors? Because I'm not sure there'll be much left of sectors 3 and 4 once Tantrum is done with them..."

Shockwave’s Tower – Blackwind’s Office

Blackwind glared back at Darkwing as he responded to her mention of the duo’s nicknames. Her stare was cold and she was unimpressed with his retort. She was silent for a few moments before she looked back to the datapad in her hand. Once Darkwing offered her the information on where they were located before they were so rudely uprooted by Shoackwave, she imputed the information for her records.

After she was done with that part of her interview she gently placed the datapad down on the desk and leaned back in the chair. She took in both of them as she rested her elbows on the arms of the chair and steepled her fingers in front of herself. Blackwind remained silent for what seemed like an eternity, until finally, she addressed her charges.

“Your assignment, for now, will be to patrol the sectors the Predacons are currently working in. You will report any unusual activity to Razorclaw. I suggest you head out now.”

Blackwind stood up from her chair and waited for Darkwing and Dreadwind to do the same and leave.

Shockwave’s Tower – Blackwind’s Office

Darkwing impatiently waited as Blackwind looked over some records and inputted same data into a pad. This was truly the worst part of the Decepticons. Oh sure, going into battle was bad, lasers flashing all around you, wingmates exploding left and right and all you could do was just take down as many bots as you could before some missile inevitably found you. At least then you had some control over how you would go down, in a blaze of glory was what he had planned. But here, stuck in a tiny little office, you were at the mercy of bureaucracy. Maybe your superior didn’t like you, maybe you looked at him or her funny once. Next thing you know you’re guarding fuel tanks. The last thing you end up seeing some high explosive grenade flung by a brave Autobot arcing to the volatile tanks. Then in a flash, you are nothing but scrap. That was now how he wanted to go.

Finally Blackwind gave them their orders. Darkwing practically jumped out of his chair. “Great, sounds fantastic. Lets get the slag out of here Dreadwind.” Darkwing practically dragged his partner out of the room and towards the hangar bay.

“What are you so excited about? More Decepticons die on patrol then anything else. Flying around in the air on this dead world, we’ll be lucky to get shot down by Autobots before an electrical storm hits and shorts us out completely,” Dreadwind said morosely.

“Yeah well, that would still be better than dying of corrosion from sitting around her office all slagging day.” The two Decepticons arrived in the hangar and quickly transformed, rocketing out of the base.

Skies over Polyhex

“Do you even know where the Predacons are on the ground?” Dreadwind asked.

“Ahhh, well, not exactly, but they are Predacons. I’m sure they won’t be too hard to find. See, look there. I’m betting that little path of destruction leads right to one of them.” The two Decepticons followed the path and flew over the site where Tantrum and Swindle were working. “Huh, didn’t know Swindle was here too. Better make sure to lock up your valuables when we get back.”

“I don’t own anything worth anything to anyone. With life spans so short what’s the point of keeping anything.”

“Good point. Hang on, what’s that up ahead?” The two fliers strafed low over the ground only to be greeted by laser fire from the approaching Dinobots.

“Whoa! Things just got interesting Dreadwind!”

“If by interesting you mean deadly, then yes.”

>>”Razorclaw, this is Dreadwind patrolling above the city. We just spotted Dinobots entering the city via Sector 4. I figure you would want to know so you can take care of them before they get any further.”<<

*

Sector 4

Grimlock took a last few shots at the rapidly departing Decepticons. “Hmm, look like element of surprise out window now. Doesn’t matter, me getting tired of waiting anyway.”

The Dinobot leader turned to his team. “Decepticons be on their way to us now. They probably send best they got at us. Me already know that not be enough, but be ready for a fight. Me know that me been looking forward to one since we got here. Too much time wasted cleaning and patrolling, now we do what we built for!”

(OOC: This is my first post as Snarl)

Sector 4

Snarl plodded along following Grimlock towards Shockwave’s Tower that stood over the ruined city of Polyhex. The Desert Warrior still had misgivings over whether or not the Dinobot Commander had really changed or if he would once again place all of their lives in danger just for the sake of getting revenge. It was Grimlock’s actions that had lead to the Dinobots becoming trapped on Earth for so long. And while his leader had admitted that he was wrong, Snarl felt that maybe Grimlock was just saying anything it took to keep the Desert Warrior and the other Dinobots from deserting him. Snarl didn’t put it past Grimlock to outright lie in order to maintain his standing over his team. Snarl would have to keep a sharp optic on his leader from now on to make sure that what happened on Earth never happens again.

Suddenly, Grimlock stopped and began firing his weapon into the air. Snarl looked skyward and spotted two Decepticon fliers coming in low over the Dinobots’ position. Before Snarl was able to get off a shot of his own, the two ‘cons began to retreat. Grimlock then turned and addressed his team. “Yeah, so much for element of surprise,” Snarl replied once his commander had finished talking. An agitated tone had crept into his voice.

What do you think’s going to happen when you shoot at two ‘cons? They come down for picnic? Snarl’s sarcastic thoughts faded as he prepared himself for whatever the Decepticons were about to throw at them. Pulling out his laser rifle and energo sword, the Desert Warrior stood ready for battle, which was something he relished in more than anything. At least Snarl would find some happiness in the heat of battle if nowhere else.

“Well, I’m ready for fight. I just hope you have plan, Grimlock, and not just flying by seat of your aft,” Snarl stated plainly, a frown forming on his faceplate. “And when I say ‘plan’ I mean one that doesn’t involve putting us all into stasis lock at the end.”

Sector 2

Razorclaw reached the first set of coordinates where Divebomb was already waiting. Transforming to robot mode, the Predacon Commander was about to issue orders to his subordinate when Swindle finally responded to his demand for an update.

>>"It’s about time I heard back from you, Swindle. Make sure the sensors in Sector 4 are activated so Shockwave can start receiving data, then finish up in Sector 3. And keep me informed of your progress in a timely manner. Razorclaw out."<<

Razorclaw had ignored the arms dealer’s comment regarding Tantrum’s destructive tendencies. A lowly mech such as Swindle was lucky to even be included on a mission with the likes of the elite Predacons. The place was a mess anyway. A little more destruction wouldn’t hurt much.

Another communiqué then came in over a secured channel, this time from Dreadwind. The Dinobots had been spotted in Sector 4 and were moving towards Shockwave’s tower. The Predacon Commander immediately responded back: >>"Understood, Dreadwind. Report back to Shockwave at once. Inform him that the Predacons are en route to engage the Dinobots."<<

Razorclaw then opened another comm link to the Predacons and Swindle: >>"This is Razorclaw. All Predacons drop what you are doing and head for Sector 4 at once. The Dinobots have been spotted in the area. Engage them on sight. Swindle, you are to finish setting up the sensors in Sector 3. Once you’re done there, I want you to set up the sensors here in Sector 2, as well. I trust you can handle this alone. I’m sending you the appropriate coordinates now. The surveillance equipment will be waiting for you. Razorclaw out."<<

The Predacon Commander turned to Divebomb. “Leave the hovercart here for Swindle. We have Dinobots to fight!” Razorclaw and Divebomb then transformed to their beast modes and double-timed it towards Sector 4.

Sector 3

>>Er, Acknowledged, Razorclaw. H-happy hunting!<<

Swindle's throat actuator cycles despite himself as he grabs the next sensor and begins hurriedly setting it up. The sensors didn't detect the Dinobots!! But I double-checked they were working, they should have linked. Unless something blocked their signal somehow. Or Shockwave may have decided not to activate them before the whole network was finished, to avoid networking bugs. Or he simply forgot.

Swindle looked over to Sector 4, where already laser fire was criss-crossing the air. Whatever the reason is, I doubt Shockwave will be assigning the blame to himself. Avoiding combat isn't such a great thing if you get shot for incompetence straight afterwards.

With little else he could do, Swindle transformed and went for the next sensor site, racking his brains for technical reasons the sensors hadn't work that wouldn't be his fault.

Grimlock turned and glared at Snarl, his brow furrowed. The Dinobot had done nothing but complain since being brought back online. He was used to the other Dinobot being surly and in a foul mood, but his constant sniping about his leadership. It was a nuisance, a distraction and was breaking the team apart. It was time for it to come to an end.

“Only one plan guaranteed to keep you from going into stasis Snarl, and that running away. That what you want? Run back to base? Tell Magnus you too afraid of going offline now, not want to fight? Every you out here Snarl, there chance you might get killed. Maybe it because of mistake, went right when should have went left. Maybe Con get lucky, plant a bomb right on head. Maybe you not figure it out, but it not safe out here.”

The Dinobot commander walked right up to Snarl. “Maybe you not stupid though, maybe you think me stupid. Maybe think me not capable of leading. Maybe you should lead then Snarl.” He planted his sword in the ground and leaned against it. “So, what your orders Snarl? Better hurry, Decepticons probably on way. Don’t want someone to die because you give wrong orders.”

*

Skies above Polyhex

Darkwing and Dreadwind banked back towards the tower. “I guess I have to radio our leaders, bravely tucked away inside the big tower about what’s going on out here.”

“I should have known we would be the first Decepticons back on Cybertron to get shot at,” Dreadwind replied.

“I’m just hoping we can go back and give them a little payback. Maybe score a kill or two before they can eat us.”

>>”Commander Shockwave, Commander Blackwind, this is Darkwing. We have encountered Dinobots entering the city. We’ve already informed Razorclaw and I assume he is leading his men against them. Do you have any further orders for us?”<<

Sector 3

Tantrum received the order from Razorclaw and didn’t hesitate. Already in his alternate mode, the Predacon took off, racing in a straight line towards the location of the Dinobots, anything in his path getting mauled by his horns and trampled beneath his hooves.

Snarl seemed to have struck a nerve receptor with the Dinobot Commander. He seldom saw Grimlock become frustrated with anything or anyone, even in battle. Of course, that was mainly because the Dinobots won most battles. Dissension among the ranks was something new to Grimlock, something he never had to deal with before. Most wouldn’t dare question his authority, but Snarl wasn’t most mechs.

The Desert Warrior stared back directly into his leader’s optics. “Let’s get a few things perfectly clear, Grimlock,” Snarl began, keeping his stare locked onto Grimlock’s faceplate. “First, I’m not leader type. Never was, never will be. You know it, I know it! I’m perfectly happy with being warrior bashing in Decepticon craniums. Second, I don’t think you stupid, Grimlock. I think you reckless at times. You allow personal vendettas to get in way against better judgment. But, you not dumb. Lastly, and this one most important to remember, I’m NOT afraid of anything or any mech, and I not afraid to get hurt! I just rather get hurt by ‘cons and not own leader like before. And you know full well I like fighting more than anything and am most happy in heat of battle.”

Snarl took a small step back and held his sword at the ready. “So you lead, Grimlock, and I fight as always.” The Desert Warrior was careful to say “fight” and not “follow”. While he planned to stay with the Dinobots for the time being, he did not plan to just blindly follow Grimlock off a cliff just because he said so.

Sector 3

Razorclaw and Divebomb entered Sector 3 and quickly followed the path of destruction left by Tantrum on his way to the Dinobots’ location. The Predacon Commander propelled himself forward on all four limbs of his beast mode, fueled by the desire to engage the Dinobots, especially Grimlock, in battle once again. The last fight back on Earth had been cut short before he could properly extinguish Grimlock’s spark for good. This time would be different. This time the Dinobot Commander would not live to fight another day.

Razorclaw quickly caught up with Tantrum and ran up alonside the mechanical bull. “Now be sure to smash those Dino-dolts the way you’re smashing up the surrounding sector,” the metal lion said in a half joking, half serious tone. He knew that Tantrum wasn’t the brightest of his group, but his usefulness lay more in his destructive capabilities. Razorclaw then opened an encrypted comm link to all of the Predacons:

>>”Predacons, listen up! When you reach the Dinobots, surround them first and then attack at will. I want their escape routes cut off! Show them no mercy!”<<

Once he closed the comm line, Razorclaw pulled ahead of Tantrum and bound into Sector 4.

Grimlock locked his optics right back on Snarl’s as the two Dinobots had a brief war of words. Swoop stood nearby, frowning at the whole thing. This really wasn’t the time to be having an argument like this. Sludge stood with his mouth slightly agape, confused at the whole situation while Slag simply vented his frustration on some nearby wreckage, hacking it to pieces with his sword.

The Dinobot leader finally responded to Snarl. “Fine. Then we fight Decepticons, but we going to finish this later Snarl.” He pulled his sword from the ground and pointed it at the other Dinobots. “Use wreckage and debris as shelter, try to hide from aerial attacks in case they come around again. Spread out, let Decepticons come to us. On my order we all open fire. If we lucky, maybe we take out one or two with concentrated firepower, then we move in for close fighting, Dinobot style.”

With his orders given the Dinobot moved to quickly follow them himself. Finding a large wall that was still mostly intact he hid behind it. He grabbed another piece of wreckage, holding it over himself to keep him covered from optics in the air. Swoop transformed and flew up to another building, transforming and landing inside a third floor window where he crouched down, his gun at the read. Slag grunted and smashed his way into a pile of wreckage, letting it fall down behind and around him, effectively hiding him from view. Sludge, never the brightest of the team, simple imitated Grimlock and hid behind a wall with some wreckage covering him up from detection in the sky.

Sector 3

Tantrum snorted at Razorclaw’s orders. “You always know how to give orders I’m happy to follow Razorclaw.” He continued smashing his way towards the Dinobots location, ready to follow both the Predacon leader’s spoke and transmitted orders once he caught sight of one of those lousy Dinobots.

“Whatever you say, Grimlock,” Snarl replied, sarcastically. If his leader had more to say to him, it would have to wait until a more appropriate time. Not that Snarl really cared one way or another. To the Desert Warrior it would never really be “finished” between them. There would always be a part of him that would never fully trust Grimlock again. Perhaps time would heal those metaphorical wounds. But, for now, Snarl would simply keep an optic on the Dinobot Commander to make sure he never again placed his own personal agendas or vendettas over the good of the team.

Snarl then listened to Grimlock’s orders and found them to be rather practical. As the other Dinobots found their hiding places, Snarl moved towards a wrecked shuttle craft nearby, which itself was half buried under a partially collapsed building. Using his sword to pry open the hatch, the Desert Warrior stepped inside the shuttle and crouched down so no one could see him through the cracked windows. Now all Snarl had to do was wait for the ‘cons to appear and Grimlock to give the order to open fire.

******

Razorclaw entered Sector 4 as Divebomb flew overhead, keeping his keen optics peeled for the invading Dinobots. >>”You see anything from up there, Divebomb?”<< The Predacon Commander spoke through a secured channel.

>>”Nothing, commander. Just miles of ruined buildings and barren landscapes. No sign of the Dinobots yet.”<< Divebomb commed back.

>>”Well, keep looking. They’ve got to be there.”<< Razorclaw responded, slowing his pace. Perhaps Darkwing and Dreadwind had been mistaken, but that was unlikely. Even they could not mistake large shadows and hunks of metal for living Dinobots. The more likely explanation was that the enemy was hiding somewhere in the ruins, waiting to ambush them as the Predacons approached.

Overhead, Divebomb spotted both Rampage and Headstrong approaching from the east. All of the Predacons were now in Sector 4 and so were the wayward Dinobots. But where were they? Divebomb kept his enhanced visual sensors scanning the ground beneath him for any signs of movement. It was a tough task to be sure. There was so much debris down there that it would be easy even for him to miss something that didn't belong.

Down below, Razorclaw stopped in his tracks and transformed to robot mode. Pulling out his sword, he opened a secure channel to all of the Predacons: >>”Everyone, be cautious and be ready. The Dinobots are hiding somewhere. They are close. I can smell them.”<<

Razorclaw peered around at the ruins, searching the area for any signs of the enemy. “Grimlock!! I know you’re here! Come out and face me! Let’s finish what we started back on Earth!” There was no movement or response. If the Dinobots were close by, they were waiting for just the right moment to strike. If Razorclaw was going to draw them out on his own terms, he’d have to hit their leader where it hurt. “This isn’t like you, Grimlock! Hiding from me? Cowards hide, Grimlock! You’re not a COWARD, are you!?”

Shockwave’s Tower – The Nerve Center

Razorclaw's report about the sensor network did not please Shockwave but it had to do. Shockwave's only reply to the Predacon commander was a personal command protocol signal acknowledging that he had heard the report. The confirmation on the importance of a working sensor grid came only moments later as Darkwing's transmission about the appearance of the Dinobots in the sector 4 reached him. While the fact that the Dinobots were now on Cybertron was logically a coincidence, Shockwave did find some irony in it appearing like the universe was playing a cruel joke on him by jarring his plans through Grimlock and his brutes time after time.

It was time to react. Following Darkwing's report, Shockwave replied to the flyer through comm-link that was also open to Blackwind. >>"Return to base. Rendezvous with Blackwind at the balcony. By time you arrive, the drones should have brought 6 laser-guided EMP warheads there. Blackwind will coordinate an airstrike against the Dinobots with Razorclaw, potentially forcing the Dinobots into statislock in order to be captured. Even if this fails their battle prowess should weaken considerably. If opportunity allows, slay Grimlock - capture others. Do not alert the Autobots of the presence of any Decepticons they haven't encountered yet."<<

Before had barely finished the transmission to Blackwind and Darkwing, the tower's transwarp communication equipment alerted him of a transmission arriving from the infiltration relay of Sol 3. Considering the maximum level security encryption, the message had to be from Megatron himself. Had he not shared encryption keys to used on this mission with Megatron and Soundwave before leaving, cracking a message like this would have taken a considerable amount of time even from him despite of having the tower's vast calculation capacity to back him up.

What was unsettling was the content of the message. Ultra Magnus, Kup, Springer, Hot Rod, Wheeljack, Arcee, Hot Spot, the Predacon traitor Howlstrike and the Dinobots - the sheer amount of dangerous Autobots on Cybertron against his own limited resources was almost certain to force him to change his original plans unless the Blackwind and the Predacons managed to deal with the Dinobots. Disgruntled, Shockwave sent a reply to Megatron in order to confirm he had indeed received the message. Adding the preliminary data about the state of Cybertron they had so far for Megatron to review while leaving the current situation out of it. With the maximum encryption message of his own sent, Shockwave divided his attention between the developing conflict of the sector 4, his own research and crafting alternative courses of action were the Dinobots not stopped.

Tantrum pulled up next to Razorclaw and transformed to his robot mode as well. He let out a snort, holding his catalytic carbine. He didn’t like this at all. He expected to come in and just start smashing Dinos left and right. What he got was stalking around some wreckage, waiting for one of the stupid Bots to poke his nose out so he could blast it off. This wasn’t the sort of fight he liked, and that made him angry. An electrical bolt rippled across the horns on top of his head.

*

Grimlock tightened his grip on his rifle as he heard the Predacons closing in. It looked like everything was going according to plan. Actually it was better than that. The chance to jump the elite Predacons, especially after the last battle they’d had on Earth. This time he was fully energized and in peak condition. Megatron’s favorite pets wouldn’t have quite so easy of a go of it this time.

The Dinobot commander listened as Razorclaw began taunting him. The words did stir some anger in him. The Predacon also remembered how the fight on Earth had gone, and he was itching for a rematch. Grimlock was more than ready to grant him that. He was barely able to hold back, but the Predacon’s words did give him and added advantage, they allowed him to gauge where the Predacon leader was without having to look at him. Finally he decided they were close enough, or perhaps the taunts had finally gotten to him, but either way he flung off the wreckage covering him and leaned around the corner of the wreckage he was using for cover.

“Dinobots, NOW!” With the command giving, Grimlock began blasting away, his rifle aimed squarely at Razorclaw.

In an explosion of wreckage and debris Slag smashed his way out of his makeshift hiding spot. He leveled his electron gun at the nearest Predacon and opened fire.

Swoop stood up in the open window of the building he had taken shelter in and added his fire to that of the others. A pair of missiles went streaking down into the middle of the formation of Predacons before he ducked back inside to reload. He kept his optics open for Divebomb, as he knew the Predacon flier had to be nearby.

Sludge was the last of the Dinobots to join in the battle, shoving his camouflage off and lumbering around the wall he had taken shelter behind. He opened fire on the Predacons with his own laser rifle.

*

Darkwing sent an affirmative back to Shockwave before speaking to Dreadwind. “EMP warheads huh? Yeah, I bet those are just in great shape after sitting in a locker inside the tower for who knows how long. I’m going to be checking mine before I load up with them.”

“It doesn’t matter,” Dreadwind replied. “Any real problems with them would only be detectable by taking them apart, and I doubt Shockwave will be patient enough for us to dissect them, not to mention neither of us being qualified to do that. We are just going to have to take them and let them detonate on our wings.”

“Yeah well, if it comes down to that I’ll just take a nosedive into the middle of those Dinobots. I’m not just going to drop out of the air like some rock.” The two fliers continued to approach the tower, mentally preparing themselves for the mission ahead.

Divebomb circled overhead, his telescopic optics scanning the ruins below for any signs of the Dinobots. Since the enemy was the same basic coloring as the surrounding wreckage, it was tough to spot them while they lay motionless. But that couldn’t last. With his commander down on the ground taunting them and calling their leader a coward, it surely wouldn’t be long before the Dinobots came out of hiding to try and silence him. And that’s exactly what happened.

Divebomb caught sight of movement below near Razorclaw’s position. It was Grimlock throwing a piece of wreckage off of himself. The flying Predacon quickly opened a comm line to his commander:

>>”Razorclaw! Watch out! Grimlock is behind you!”<<

The rest of the Dinobots then began to emerge from their hiding places. As they did, Divebomb observed each of their locations and quickly transmitted the data to his fellow Predacons below. Divebomb then caught sight of a familiar face plate as two missiles streaked down from the third floor window of a nearby building. Swoop! You dirty bird! The mechanical eagle thought as he changed course and flew directly towards the building in question.

Taking aim at the third floor, Divebomb unleashed a hail of laser fire into the window where he had just seen Swoop duck inside for cover.

*********

Razorclaw glared around at the ruins of the once great city of Polyhex. The Dinobots were there somewhere waiting for the right time to strike. The Predacon Commander kept his audio and optical sensors attuned to every sound and everything around him. At any moment the enemy could make themselves known and he had to be ready to strike back.

Then it happened. The sound of wreckage being thrown to the ground caught Razorclaw’s attention. This was followed quickly by the distinctive voice of Grimlock, himself, along with Divebomb’s warning from above. Whirling around in place, the Predacon Commander was met with a barrage of heavy laser fire from his Dinobot counterpart. A blast grazed Razorclaw's side, but he paid it no mind and quickly returned fire with his shoulder-mounted concussion cannons as he opened a comm line to the others:

>>”Predacons, we are under attack! Take evasive action!”<<

Razorclaw then dove for cover behind a small structure as two missiles struck the ground close by, forcing the Predacons to break formation and scatter. The blast singed Razorclaw’s back slightly, but it was nothing serious. Regaining his stance, the Predacon leader quickly reloaded his weapons. It was time to show Grimlock what it meant to be a Predacon.

Transforming to his lion alt mode, Razorclaw leapt up on top of the structure he had sought cover behind and took aim with his concussion cannons. He was directly across from where Grimlock was positioned and had a perfect view of his target. The mechanical lion then blasted away not at the Dinobot Commander, but at the wall of wreckage Grimlock was cowering behind with the hopes it would come tumbling down on top of him.

Having recovered from the missile strikes, Rampage and Headstrong spread out in different directions and began to engage the Dinobots in a fierce fire fight.

*********

Snarl waited patiently in the downed shuttle craft for the Decepticons to arrive. He was itching to get back into battle as quickly as possible. It had been a while since the last real fight he had been in and the short time inside the Ark-19’s training room back on Earth didn’t count for much. Fighting drones was not the same as fighting ‘cons.

Or Predacons! Snarl thought as he peered through one of the shuttle’s broken windows. A short distance away was Razorclaw, yelling for Grimlock to show himself. He even had the audacity to call the Dinobot Commander a coward. Snarl couldn't help but smile a bit at Grimlock being taunted by a mech other than himself. The Desert Warrior wondered how much longer his leader could listen to the insults before he finally reacted. The wait was not long.

Grimlock finally gave the order to attack and Snarl quickly emerged from the wrecked shuttle, his rifle and energo blade at the ready. The Desert Warrior soon caught sight of Tantrum and opened fire on the Predacon fueler.
