My poor Grammy is lactose intolerant. So eating a milkshake gives her gas from hell. You poor people! The biggest problem anything gives me is with alcohol. If I drink just a little I usually get sick. I've never even gotten to the point of being fairly inebriated without feeling the need to utterly urp.

Thats a shame.....but I dont drink that much ether, alcohol turns to sugar in your system as well and if I drink the way I used to my b/s will rise above 500.

How often do you have to check your blood sugar? I've heard of some people doing it all day and taking shots before every meal. EEK!

I check my b/s about 8 times a day and have to take about 9 shots a day.

God that's awful! Do you just get used to it and it's no big thing after a while? When I was in the hospital I was a human pin cushion. I had a transfusion going on in one arm, an IV in the other, and the nurse would come in and refuse to use the needle already there! I was black and blue by the time I left and ready to beat in someone's head.

Agreed on the root beer. And they've yet to come up with a good diet ginger ale as well.

It's interesting to hear your reaction to sugar versus complex carbs. I have exactly the opposite reaction. I've had to cut out pretty much anything dessert-like. Regular ol' sugar sends my BG through the roof (along with a horrific headache and feeling really, really angry), but I can still eat white bread (and most anything else with enriched flour, pasta, etc).

(By the way, Barilla's Plus brand of pasta might be worth looking into... there's something about the way they treat the flour for it that makes it not so bad. We've switched over from regular pasta to that and spinach pasta (yum).)

Just out of curiosity, what insulin(s) are you on? When I was diagnosed, they started aggressive treatment, and put me on Novolog after every meal, plus Lantus before bed. There was some talk of stepping down to an oral medication like glucophage because I was having a problem timing the Novolog doses with meals and having frequent hypo moments. I've gotten better about it, so they're happy.

I'm on Novolog before every meal as well as for maintainence needs.I take Lantus twice a dayonce when I get up and before bed time.I also take a new injection called Byatta twice a day,one before breakfeat and one before dinner. It slows the stomache from emtying as fast and decresses the amount of sugar released by my liver over night.I cant take any of the oral medication anymore. Thanks for the heads up on the foods.
