As we saw in the first movie when we got a look under 'Bees hood, whatever powerplant he may have been packing when he left Cybertron would have to have been modified to fit in the space alotted. Of course nobody would put that sweet of an engine into a '74 Camaro and leave the body crappy.
Regardless of the claimed 0-60 times of a Volt (I think there must be a hill or a tailwind involved there) there's no way a Corvettes engine and transmission could fit into a standard Volt and there is no way that a car built like the Volt (Terran or Cybertronian) could handle the tourque of a Corvette's powerplant or it's Cybertronian equivalant. This is just my opinion but I would be inclined to say that on this or any other world, the Volt would be a dwindling spec in the 'Vette's rear view mirror. (or any other comparable trans-scanned vehicles that you may want to match up)
There may be variances due to the Cybertronian materials and their different tolerances but there are still universal constants that have to be considered too.
Of course, it's just specualtion. I could be way off but based on the vehicles I've had and the engines I've built (or rebuilt) and the kind of cars (and drivers) I've humiliated, I would call my guess reasonably educated.

So its the engine that is under the hood that is powering the alt. mode? I've often thought about that since that scene when they showed BB's engine

District 9, what Transformers could have been ...

Plenty of hod rodders and street racers have done exactly this. Its called a sleeper.

Actually, considering the Volt is a pure electric car, the claimed 0-60 times of 6 seconds are very possible. An electric motors toque output is generally 3 times of an equivalent gasoline engine. The Tesla roadster is a pure electric vehicle and has a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds.
Although I'd agree with you that a corvette's drivetrain would not fit (at least not with major modifications) in the Volt, I'm not sure that was the question at hand.
I think what syphonn was getting at is that the alt mode is just "a disguise" for all intended purposes and As long as the autobots/decepticons are similarly matched, it doesn't matter what vehicles is scanned. If this was his original question, then I don't belive this to be true. I believe that alt modes are chosen based on size, weight, maneuverability, and speed. One who is big and lumbering (like Long Haul or bulkhead) are not going to scan a Mustang or Camaro. There going to scan an vehicle that suits them in both size and ability.
Decepticons... Com in get yo ice cream!.... And then get yo ass whop'in!!

Ive heard that some car lines will be sold off to different car companies.
There is no real reason why Transformers should be limited to new cars. You have the whole world of refurbished hot rod and muscle cars that would make great alt mode.
In addition to helping promote GM Bay likes cars he considers cool.
