There are springs involved actually, its not quite that simple but not really that hard either, you just have to be careful.
There used to be a step by step instructional with pics somewhere on the net, I can't find it now. You may want to try a google search for it.

I don't see how you can avoid the springs all together as the springs are actually attached to the smokestacks via a small hook on the end of the spring, at least mine were.The smokestacks on mine are spring loaded.
