Now I have to preface this with the information that I didn't intend what happened, nor am I suggesting other people do it, but I was wondering if they happened to anyone else.

I recently took that coupon to Target for the $5 off any toy purchase of $25 of more and I purchased the $20 Voyager class movie Starscream and the $7 Deluxe class Jungle Bonecrusher (clearance price). So I paid $22 plus tax, which was $27 minus the $5 coupon.

I then looked at the Starscream, unopened at home, and decided I would rather spend the money on a Deep Space Starscream when it comes out. So I returned the Voyager Starscream with the receipt. When I got home I looked at the receipt for the return. They gave me back $20 for it. So this means it only cost me $2 plus tax for Bonecrusher.

I guess this means once you use the $5 off coupon, but only return SOME of the things on the receipt, you still get the $5 off. Has this happened to anyone else? Seems like something that could be abused.

Um, yeah, I work in customer service and no, it will not always work. The person who took it back checked the whole receipt and just didn't care. That's what I normally do. But, ultimately, it depends on the mood of the person behind the desk.

As a retail worker it is something that can be easily abused. It's very annoying to deal with people who do abuse it. Depending on who you're dealing with, there's not much they can do since most companies will cave in to any little complaint if you try to take off the discounts that were given to them. Some people will be so confused about it too, and start shouting that you're stealing from them, no matter how many times you try to explain it. Bleh. What can ya do?

We actually have regular "coupon people" at our store who try to abuse this and often succeed. I know some store chains have computers that will take into account a used coupon when processing a return, but Target's system is not that advanced. If someone pays with a credit/debit card and brings that in to return the items without a receipt, they will be credited the full amount of the item. I hate it, but until Target decides to do something about it, there's not anything practical that can be done.

I had the same thing happen to me when I returned some that I had bought with the coupon. It IS something that can be abused but it takes so much effort to make $5 with the off chance that they'll track you that I don't think it's worth it to do on purpose.
