Firstly, if this topic belongs elsewhere, or needs to be moved, I apologise and mods please do so!
Hi all, long-time lurker, first-time poster. I've been a fan of Transformers since 1984, when I first saw "More Than Meets The Eye" hacked up as part of ITV's Wide Awake early morning show (I'm in the UK).
As well as the robots in disguise, I collect various other toylines, including Star Wars. In that collecting community at the moment, there is a big to-do over the issue of reissues/reproduction parts and their impact on the hobby. Some feel they are an affordable way of completing figures with their correct weapons and accessories, while others feel they are tantamount to heresy, and are having a negative effect on the value of items, trust amongst collectors, confidence when buying - some sellers, rather than freely admitting they have repro items, try and pass them off as "the real deal" for example.
The situation is slightly different for Transformers, but there are similarities, and I'm interested in hearing what others think. For example, repro-stickers and labels for our old TFs. Good thing or bad thing? Do you consider a toy you have with "new" stickers as a genuine complete figure, or a genuine figure with repro parts? How long do you think it will be before some enterprising fans start making repro missiles, weapons, accessories etc - and will this be a good thing or bad? Imagine being able to easily pick up a spare Sunstreaker fist, or Aerialbots guns for a fraction of the price they go for on ebay currently...
And what of reissues? Do you consider a Commemorative/TF Collection reissue Jazz as a "Generation 1 Jazz" in your collection, or is he something separate, a whole other series? For example, I count my reissues as part of my G1 collection, and not as a different series - despite them not being "made" in 1984-1986. But I can see why some people wouldn't. What if some one included a reissue weapon (I'm talking about the Japanese ones now which are near-identical, not the Hasbro reissue ones which are often larger/altered) with an original G1 figure and said that it was all "vintage original"? No harm, no foul? Or a real problem for the TF fan community?
And what of repro figures themselves? Obviously the old gestalt remakes from China were pretty easy to distinguish as inferior quality, but from what I hear the new KO Swoop and Decepticon cassettes are almost "reissue" quality. They really appeal as a way of getting my fave characters/toys for a good price, but are such releases harming the market?
I'm interested in opinions on the subject! I'm not quite sure where I fall in the whole repro debate anyway. I would hate to buy anything and not be confident I know whether its original/repro. But at the same time, I can understand/appreciate the opportunity to buy a Luke Skywalker lightsaber repro for 50p so my figure looks complete, rather than £4-5. As long as a seller is honest as to what he's selling. But seller honesty is a whole other debate I suppose...
