Robot Masters Wingstun Review

Postby Thyunda » Sat May 03, 2008 2:34 pm

Wingstun, my first Robot Masters figure, is, in a word, strange. Hows about I tell you about the robot mode first, since that’s the mode he’s in when in his box.
Well, he costs as much as a deluxe, and is about quarter of the size of one. He comes with two weapons, a translucent green trident, and a green laser rifle. Which can be split in half and stored in the backs of his legs. According to his instructions, his trident can combine with the weapons of other RM figures, and form what looked, in my opinion, like a bladed space-tadpole. His legs have pretty nice articulation, but he has no feet. Just short thighs, and long shins. With landing gear in the front. Not only that, but he carries most of his alternate mode on his back. He’s got a nice little green/brown camo paintjob, with yellow marks on some edges. Both wings have big purple Decepticon symbols on, as well as the tip of his nosecone. It’s interesting to note that his head cannot turn. And he doesn’t even look straight ahead, instead, his head permanently points slightly to the right. It’s not that bad, it makes him look cool when he’s got his rifle in both hands. Balance is a slight issue. Any attempt at making him bend his legs for a pose makes his wings weigh him down and pull him backwards.
Well, according to Wikipedia.org (TFWikia didn’t have a page for Wingstun), my new buddy is an experienced soldier, assigned to energy management, and his minty-fresh translucent trident is called the Jamming Trident….excuse me…..Why would a veteran soldier, obviously effective, be assigned to energy management?! Surely that’s what Smokesniper is there for! He’s laid back and whatever, he couldn’t give a damn whether he was in battle or not….
Anyway, now that I got that outta my system, I’ll describe his alternate mode.
From what I read, he transforms into a ‘jet’. Evidently, this ‘jet’ is a military aircraft of some sort. I’m not sure. Wikipedia was being too specific. To put him from robot mode into this, so-called ‘jet’ mode, all you need to do is pull the cockpit up. The springs and such will handle the rest. Then, all you need to do is push his legs and arms into place. Well, that’s all I’ve done. I’ve probably failed, but he looks ok from the top. Personally, I love the shape of this ‘jet’. I’m not going to describe it to you. I’ve got pictures above or below the review, depending on which plan I decide to go with. One problem with this is that he can’t store the Peppermint Jamming Trident anywhere, so it has to stay separate, and if you have my memory, it’ll be separate for a lo-o-o-o-n-g time.
In conclusion, (see, proper conclusion), I’d say Wingstun is a nice figure. Except for the little issues with our friend balance, and external storage of his Jamming Trident of Mouthwash Goodness. I’d rate him a 7/10.

You should be able to get the head to turn. There's not a lot of motion possible, maybe fifteen degrees or so to the left and right, but it should turn.

The mould has some heritage to it before the Robotmasters release. It was one of the few original moulds in the Machine Wars line where it was released as both Thundercracker and Skywarp, saw it's first Japanese release as a Predacon (Dirge, off the top of my head) under Galvatron's command in the Beast Wars Second line. There was a further US release in the original Universe line as well put out under the name of Wind Sheer. All of these came with his rifle, but the spear weapon was a unique accessory to the Robotmasters version.

Nice review. I like his paint job and weapon gimmick . After combining with other weapons, it looks like this:

Yeah, I forgot to mention that he was a redeco of Machine Wars Thundercracker. Wow, peppermint bladed space-tadpole!
