I'm very curious about this figure, I have only see pictures and have never seen any of the Japanexse Exclusive Trnnsformers cartoons. What is the character like, and more importantly, how cool is this toy?

I know there were 1991 and 2005 versions, what are the differences? How much will they run me? And if I wanted to, where should I look for one?

As far as I know the toy is a static brick with a pretty cool Micromaster Hotrod. I want it for the Micromaster.

He's quite the brick.

He does have some electronics, mainly the half track from his trailer.

He has a large base mode.

Overall think Armada Optimus Prime if his trailer did not separate from his cab. Armada Prime is quite the homage to Star Convoy. Down to the tiny car companion.

As for prices, BBTS has a few from 80 to 90 bucks. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

He is indeed a brick and by todays standards he sucks. His poseability is pretty much limited to moving his arms up and down. However there are other reasons to love this figure.

He looks cool, he has a bunch of cool little gimmicks, and he has some neat alt modes. Top that off with the fact that he has working rubber treads and you've got a pretty sweet toy.

He is honestly one of my favorite TF's.

Lookie here...

He's a brick. It's obvious. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

He "walks" in robot mode with the tred movement. It's awesome. His vehicle crawls by way of the tred movement, again, awesome.

He's big and in some ways he is really Japanese G1-ish in his bright, large, single piece plastic. He looks like a giant samurai with the blue legs appearing like a hakama.

He has a traditional "Prime" gun, which is nice.

His truck mode has two 'bays' which actually hold cargo containers for Micromasters. These work with a launching mechanism. It's totally rad and could put out any kid's eye.

He's got a big stupid lousy base mode.

The transformation is intuitive and while simple, quite clever.

He includes Micromaster Hot Rod, which if you get the reissue, has been improved vastedly.

The reissue version has metalic gold on the chest where the original has basic yellow paint.

He was over-produced and surprisingly unpopular (probably due to BT and ALT releases at the time displaying the new wave articulation and making him look really dated).

Tell ya what.

This was the first I'd heard of Star Convoy.
When I looked at pictures of him, though, I immediately had flashbacks (flashforwards?) to Animated Optimus Prime.
Seriously... look at those windshields, legs, and just about everything.
Good ol' Animated Prime has a few homage to him, doesn't he?

Also, that truck mode kind of looks like the the truck mode for RID Ultra Magnus (or "God Magnus," if you prefer).

Or do I just need to go get some coffee?

I was never a fan of the old G1 brickformers- then I got a God Ginrai (Powermaster Optimus Prime w/ Apex Armor). Pretty brickish but so cool! That's what got me wanting a Star Convoy- alas, still wanting, can't go for it quite yet. I'll jump on one at the right price, tho.

Star Convoy is awesome. He is large and can combine with Grandus (who sucks) and Sky Garry.

I was just looking at the overall appearance of the truck mode.
A truck cab with a carrier/trailer attached and a large gun perched on top.
Not a massive similarity, mind you, but I was decaffeinated at the time...

Okay, on the brick factor, how bad are we talking? Compare him to Powermaster Prime, that would be an easy reference for me.

Yes indeed that is a great comparison. Except there is no separate cab/bot.

Star Convoy actually has Powermaster Prime beat by one point when it comes to articulation:

Powermaster Prime
- shoulders (up and down)
- legs (left and right)

Total: 4

Star Convoy
- shoulders (up and down)
- elbows (up and down)
- waist

Total: 5

True, he is quite the brick, but I love him to death. I ought him a few years ago & I couldn't stop playing with him. The base mode was totally cool to me, especially after getting a crapload of Micromasters in the mail. And even though i don't have either of them, the ability to combine Star Convoy with Sky Garry & Grandus is awesome. The motors in Star Convoy make the elevator in Granus move up & down!! That's the best part! Plus the formation of the three is completely BA. I say just stop thnking about & buy him. :grin:
