Video codecs

Postby Supreme Convoy » Fri Jan 11, 2008 12:41 am

:BOT: Due to a virus, I had to fix my computer. I was fortunate to recover files but I can't play videos.

I don't like Divx because of that watermark on videos.

Is there a codec that people would recommend? :CON:

That's a good codec if all you watch is MOVs and MP4s. But if you want to watch AVI, OGM, WMV, MKV, or anything else, you're pretty much out of luck.

Quicktime should just be become a computer Household thing. I mean what with iTunes and iPods and iPhones now, All of which require qucktime.
Plus with Quicktime Pro you can Covert and Export any Quicktime file into a AVI, OGM, WMV, MKV ect. and Vice Versa. Ofcourse I never need to though.

Funny how most new dvd players are coming divx capable and not Quicktime capable. Guess the likes of Sharp, Sony, LG etc know which is the better format.

Also funny how you seem to find things in avi format more often than mov ...

Besides, do a search on the net, xvid seems to be the way to go.

The only reason Quicktime is even popular is because it's owned by Apple and of course they're going to push it on all of their platforms, much like Microsoft push WMV.

Just because the big companies push it, doesn't make it good.

Thats because a majority of the World uses PC's(cuz they're cheaper) but Mac is on the rise.I give it another 10 yrs and the Majority of the world will be Mac.
And if I download something off the net and it's AVI or Dvix whatever , I use QTpro and make it into QT. Quicktime is like magic. You know mac users know what I mean. Plus Mac'c are used all over the world in the Industry and Creative fields. All your Hollywood Blockbuster Movies and your TV shows and your Music videos and your DVD's that you watch are made and Edited using Mac's. Every Commercial Media Product sold in stores more than likely came off a Mac or was edited by one.
It's just now that in recent years the general public is picking up on it.
Sorry, guess I'm a passionate Mac Dork! :-B
We can agree to disagree.

Yeah, see, I was trying to avoid the whole Mac -vs- PC debate. But you know ... whatever.

Quicktime is like magic? ummmm yeah ... sure. Okay ... frankly I don't see the difference between any of the formats and Quicktime to me is just Apple stuff. Hell i've got just the player but every now and then it pops up telling me a new version of iTunes is available with Quicktime included.

So yeah, that's annoying. I just want a player, I have no need for iTunes.

And whether Macs dominate in 10 years or not, fact remains, dvd players are currently produced to play avi files and support the divx codec. That alone really says what format the dvd player industry is supporting. And i'm betting it's because they don't need to involve themselves with either Apple or Microsoft.
