what is the best transformers toy in terms of design

Not a fan of Prime, but I must agree that the PRID Vehicon is one of the most absolutely perfect car-mode transformers period, let alone what series. My ONLY complaint is his knees don't bend very far, and he has no waist joint (which would have been easy for them to include, if it wasn't for the parts budget). And I can fix the knee thing with a quick cut job that won't hurt anything.

After all the recomendations, I finally bought Vehicon Prime RID on BBTS along with generations Shockwave and the First Edition Starscream redeco that was on clearance since I love sleek robot designs and all these figures have that.
Could you please let me know what you did exactly for the knees to bend further back?

I haven't done it yet, but if you look at the back of the knee, on the lower royal blue part, it has several grooves in it. I am just going to cut the topmost piece of plastic that blocks knee bending.

To be honest guys, I was at first let down. You can see the whole figure under the car so I thought it would be an easy transformation of undoing the panels that make up the car to show the figure underneath. But then the ENTIRE CAR came apart. I had the robot and the shell of the car at the same time and I realized that the car would fold onto itself so that instead of this simply being a shellformer (which it could easily have been), this entire shell becomes the legs. So it leaves behind a nice sleek robot which looks like one of those figures you cant transform. It is flawless, who would have thought that a second rate non character would display the best engineering of the entire series. When you have something like this, it really makes you wonder how stuff like RID Prime Ultra Magnus can have such a huge backpack (he also came with my order, the Takara version has simply too low a price)

How is he, quality-wise? I know for a fact that the US version has really floppy shoulder joints, I'm wondering if the AM version suffers the same fate.

I didnt notice that, all the joints are fine he does still feel very light and hollow. I am still not a fan of this toy. His long backpack feels very lazy from a design perspective and limits the angles at which you can pose him. Also, the entire legs can be seen in vehicle mode.
However, I preffer this hammer over the RID one and I did like applying the stickers.
Edit:
The fact that he can hold the hammer with both hands is also a big plus for me.

Re: what is the best transformers toy in terms of design
I haven't read absolutely everybodies opinion but I took a look at this thread because I got Cybertron Prime out and I remembered that I had seen somebody say he was the best transformer ever on YouTube.
I used to agree but I have had a bit of a change of heart. Here are my top few anyway - I'll try to keep it short.
1 - MP01 - MP Optimus Prime.
I think that the few years of G1 inspired generations figures and universe figures, the live action films and the whole new injection of money into the product line has blinkered us to how much of a victory for the common TF fan MP01 actually was. The figure is 'beyond imagination' ( lol ) and still stands out even amongst the MP line as the nearest thing to a perfect re-imagining of the ideal 80's G1 era as we could possibly ever hope to expect. Then - you actually receive the figure and see the many tiny pistons in his joints, the faithful face looking back at you from your childhood, the truck seat is in the middle just like G1 prime, there is SO MUCH die cast. Then you open him up and see the matrix - it looks like the matrix we have been waiting for as G1 fans since childhood. The Cybertron one was good but this one is collector standard. The wheels have suspension, the fingers move, the 'ears' move, the chest opens like in the film, you get a tiny megatron in the box . . . . so many more things. I just can't see how anybody who is the same sort of TF fan I am - or just an action figure fan even could argue that MP01 wasn't a massive step forward for the fandom. Very few of the figures people mention here were actually released before MP01.
Don't get me wrong - I like and respect the second MP Prime but to me he seems like a fantastic generations figure rather than an MP. I Like MP01 for the die cast and the fact that it was a thing I had desired my whole life and never thought I would see. I don't care about the scale or the stupid short smokestacks because I'm in the UK. My MP01 is within the top few of my absolute most dearest possessions.
2 Cybertron Optimus Prime
Until MP01 I though C Prime was amazing. I was totally prepared to accept the updated alt mode and I even quite liked the series ( though I tried to pretend I didn't as I was about 24 when it was aired in the UK lol ).
He is a truly great figure and for me he regenerated a lot of my latent passion for TF's at the time. He is by far the best figure of the Cybertron line ( though I love a few others ) and he came with a MATRIX!
The combination thing with Leo Breaker was lame but the engineering of the toy worked it in so well that I had it ages before I actually realised that I had a version that was capable of connecting to others. I actually have Energon Tidal Wave and Cybertron Prime can use a few of his bits even! ( Tidal Prime??? )
3 MP Grimlock ( any version! )
I said I'd keep it short so this - the only thing that makes MP Grimlock lower on the list than MP01 is that he isn't Optimus Prime. This figure is also perfect. . . . okay - we could have done without the waggly head and tail gimmick and maybe had light up eyes or a light in the mouth instead of that stupid light up hand thing but still..... 99% perfect. All is good.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
MP Megatron - seriously. Wow - did real human people design that transformation? I can't decide if they were geniuses or evil or both. I am afraid to touch my MP Megatron. At first that annoyed me. Now I can kind of relate to it. The Megatron it represents was a devilishly portrayed gremlin of a character. Now the best figure I can probably ever hope to own of him is a devilishly difficult gremlin of a product. You always know that the perfect pose of a perfectly tight gun mode is just a few clicks away - yet YOUR GONNA BREAK IT!!! It's evil . . but brilliant.
I love my MP Rodimus. Yeah it's a bit flawed but it is still an amazing product.
Any MP with a plane mode is an engineering marvel, they are all excellent. I have MP Skywarp. I always preferred him over StarScream!
Generations Warpath, all of the 'Countach triplets' - Sunstreaker etc, Cyclonus, Perceptor, RTS Jazz and Tracks... so many from those lines.
Yet for some reason I still, to this day have big love for the jumpstarters. They are the only G1 I still display. I'm not suggesting them for best ever or anything but they are still part of my display. Twin Twist was the first TF I remember keeping the box for and cutting the robot points out of when I was a kid.
Loads of people are slating the upcoming film figures but we should remember - the money made from movie products sold to kids are probably allowing the funding for the lines that we have seen in the last few years.
Sorry . . . I got carried away.....

I have both MP-01 and MP-10. I preferMP-10 more than MP-01 because I consider it have an overall better engeneering and the vehicle mode is perfect. However, I will never, ever get rid of my MP-01. So much die-cast, you can bludgeon someone to death with it! He's MASSIVE, powerful looking, his fingers are individually artuculated and dont pop off. **** is GLORIOUS. For me, both MP-10 and 01 are worth owning. What more, because of MP-10, it's possible to have a MP-01 for a reasonable price. Also, you might want to look into an upgrade kid for your's shorts smokestacks.
As for Cybertron Optimus, (I have the Galaxy Force version), it was my very first TF I bought way back in 2007, before the Movie. I was very impressed by his look and engeneering. However, I only started seriously collecting around autumn 2010. What more, my Takara Cybertron Leader Optimus Prime was bought brand new for... 55$ plus shipping. As a buy-it-now on Ebay! Anyway, his only fault is his visible head in vehicle mode. Otherwise, no true OP fan can do without him.
Never got the MP Grimlock because it was and still is pretty expensive and I dont really like his G1 look.
---------------------------
Now, my pick of the day: Cybertron Jolt, a Minicon.

It's amazing looking, and is GREAT fun to transform and fiddle with. His colors, design, and transformation make me think he's some kind of modern Go-Bots. And I really, REALLY like it!

My collection has grown A LOT since I got on this site and I can now answer the challenge I proposed a little while back. So these are my favourite transformers in terms of design. You will notice that I tend to preffer sleek designs with a nice integration of the alt mode with the robot mode and as kibble free in both modes as possible.
Jet/Plane: First Edition Prime Starscream

Helicopter: Like Kanrabat pointed out, the best helicopter design by faaaaar is the Skyhammer mold. It is nearly kibble free and every panel pegs into one another in both modes. He also has a nice complex transformation that is intuitive at the same time. And the way his forearms transform/appear is a thing of magic.

Racecar (ex: F1, Nascar): Alternators Decepticharge (No one shares the following opinion with me: this is the transformer with the best integration of the alt mode into a robot possible)

Car: Prime RID Vehicon/Animated Lockdown both are nearly flawless and have 2 perfectly sleek modes

Truck/Train/ATV: ROTF Optimus leader

Construction Vehicle: Cybertron Landmine deluxe (I really love how every part that forms his robot mode is present in the alt mode but we dont see it)

Tank : ROTF Bludgeon Voyager/Generation Warpath deluxe

Base/Planet/City : Cybertron Primus! I know you see Unicron on this list but I truly believe Primus is the better planet design. Unicron is an accomplishment but he isn't round in planet form and his chest bugs me for the lack of accuracy along with the great amount of kibble and the wings that don't stay in. Primus is perfect. He transforms without headache and, for a planet, still has a very sleek robot mode with great use of the kibble. Instead of retreating the kibble to his back where it can't be seen, it is exposed adding to this god's glory. He reminds me of a transformer's version of Da Vinci's Vetruvian Man.

Motorcycle : Animated Prowl (the samurai version is cool too)

Weapon: CLassics Megatron.
Water vehicle: HFTD Seaspray, what a cool toy... and he has optional flippers!

Cybertronian land vehicle: Animated Rodimus Minor

Cybertronian air vehicle : Universe Cyclonus and Vector Prime

Dinosaur or Dragons: Beast Wars Original Leader Megatron. I am still so impressed with both modes and how they tried so hard to make it as screen accurate for that time in both design and transformation. And Transmetal 2 Megatron is amazing too!

And I have said it before. Of all the transformers series out there, the most consistent one for great designs is Transformers Animated. These are the most screen accurate and kibble free figures out there.

Some of you may despise the Transmetal 2 line with their mostly irregular and imposable robot modes, but here's an example of one done perfectly right:
Stinkbomb, or RiD Gas Skunk

No fancy gimmick that gets in the way, no heads for hands, standing perfectly straight without (much of a) problem, symmetric design with asymmetric detailing, transformation is a breeze, and a unique beast mode.

Stinkbomb, or RiD Gas Skunk
No fancy gimmick that gets in the way, no heads for hands, standing perfectly straight without (much of a) problem, symmetric design with asymmetric detailing, transformation is a breeze, and a unique beast mode.
I like the figure but he looks utterly nothing like an actual skunk. Just sayin'.

I actually love transmetal 2. While some designs and figures get very busy ( looking at you tigerhawk) there are some really interesting designs. My favourites are Deptcharge and Megatron. Their transformations are quite interesting and both of those alt mdes are kickass
Megatron from that series was even included as one of the must have transformers in this article

Now, my pick of the day: Cybertron Jolt, a Minicon.
Image
It's amazing looking, and is GREAT fun to transform and fiddle with. His colors, design, and transformation make me think he's some kind of modern Go-Bots. And I really, REALLY like it!
Totally agree there bud. I ddn't mention but Jolt is always my choice for the best ever minicon. I have the version called Swashplate rather than the Jolt version though.

RTS Lugnut is pretty fantastic. The bomber mode is great looking and has a huge wingspan. Pretty articulate in robot mode. Double jointed knees, ankle tilts, fingers and a jaw so he can praise his grand a glorious master.

Been a while since I didnt post anything here. This is probably my favourite thread in all of Seibertron and I hope new collectors like me will be able to find it to get an idea of the great quality available out there.
There is one transformer I have yet to mention that I feel should go on this list: First Edition Prime Cliffjumper. I am so impressed at the amount of detail and engineering that went into this deluxe sized figure. I love how the chest forms with the actual car parts (unlike the PRID version) and they were able to have his hands actual transform into blasters.
The character may have only been in the show for 4 minutes total but they still made a great toy in his honor!

Amen on Prime First Edition CJ. Every time I play w this figure I simply admire which ever mode I transform him into. In terms of this thread, I recently acquired Animated Deluxe Rodimus and he is nice. Great in both modes and so much articulation.

I am a big fan of the IDW comics and IDW 30th Springer is one of my favorites. He looks like he jumped off the page with a great looking robot mode, plus 2 alt modes that are pretty good. On top of that he can be bought fairly cheap.

Like to add IDW Swerve too as a cheap small fun to transform guy with awesome robot and truck modes. Since new collectors have been mentioned here a couple times these are both cheap and easy to find, well Springer is, Swerve can be harder to track down.

Over here, it's the contrary. Springer appeared only once on the local TrU's shelves to be replaced by an endless sea of Rhinox and Sandstorms. (At least, I own both. Sandstorm is AMAZING but Rhinox is meh.) We never got Megatron and Starscream Legends (Had to order them online) and my local Walmart is choking under an avalanche of Cosmos and Swerves. Got Cosmos, he's nice, but I don't want to pay full price for Swerve. For me, 12$ for a go-bots that only need to make a face-plant and fold his legs onto his back to transform is a bit overpaid. For how much of his there is, he will be 50% off eventually.

william-james88 wrote:My collection has grown A LOT since I got on this site and I can now answer the challenge I proposed a little while back. So these are my favourite transformers in terms of design. You will notice that I tend to preffer sleek designs with a nice integration of the alt mode with the robot mode. I will also only add pics of transformers that have not been shown in this thread yet.
Base/Planet/City : UNICRON (any)
Motorcycle : Animated Prowl (the samurai version is cool too)
Cybertronian land vehicle: WFC Optimus Generations deluxe (greatest complexity I have ever seen in deluxe class and a beauty to transform)
Cybertronian air vehicle : Classics Cyclonus/Vector Prime
Dinosaur or Dragons: Beast Wars Original Leader Megatron. I am still so impressed with both modes and how they tried so hard to make it as screen accurate for that time in both design and transformation. And Transmetal 2 Megatron is amazing too!
And I have said it before. Of all the transformers series out there, the most consistent one for great designs is Transformers Animated. These are the most screen accurate and kibble free figures out there.
WFC Optimus has one flaw, in vehicle mode, you run the risk of scratching his face to the ground. Aside from that, great body design (wonder why they opted for that vehicle mode in the first place)
